If you come in here looking for "anime recommendations" then please refer to this chart before posting: Anime Recommendations (as of may 2014). We also have an IRC channel called #tladt where we all hang out. The channel is on Rizon, not QuakeNet! Feel free to check it out. TLADT discord is Discord.ggFor currently airing anime, please see Anichart.net |
If you're gonna watch Summer Wars you might as well watch The Girl Who Leapt Through Time.
On top of that, The Promise Made in Our Early Days and Voices of a Distant were also good Shinkai films.
I would recommend a short series.....but then again I don't know if Katanagatari is short with its 50 minute episodes.

I mean, the original Kaiser basically went Hitler on ethnic minorities, the disabled, and homosexuals.
For the screen shot in question, maybe it meant something about his size? That character is someone who is basically one of the largest/strongest non-Rosenritter people on the Alliance side (or at least I think it is). No, the whole show is. All the women are secretaries (and all the secretaries are women), no women in important positions at all, and they're all submissive to the men. The only black person is a body guard who defers to a sixteen year old. Admittedly, I'm only up to ep. 60, but it really seems pretty noticeably racist and sexist lol. Jessica was submissive? I don't think so. And she wasn't a secretary. Edit: About DVDs for LoGH, will there be a BD? I'm pretty sure that BDs hold more stuff than DVDs, and a DVD box set for LoGH would be like 30 discs -_- She does nothing until + Show Spoiler +Her husband dies. And then she dies like 5 episodes later. The other non-submissive female is a whore who gets ahead in life by selling her body. That's pretty progressive right there. :/ Again, this is only until ep. 60. + Show Spoiler +Orly, I didn't realize Frederica Greenhill was a prostitute, or that Annerose "sold her body". If you are refering to that slut from Phezzan, then you would be right though lol.
Speaking as someone who has watched the entire show, I disagree with your assessment of the show being sexist. I would have also probably disagreed if I was around episode 60 as well. + Show Spoiler +Yes obviously I'm referring to Phezzan girl :p
And Annerose does nothing but sit in her house all day tending the garden. Again, that's not exactly breaking out of gender roles.
And again, Fredrica isn't exactly a feminist hero. She's an administrative assistant (or whatever you want to call it) who as of where I am in the show is fretting about how she won't be a good wife because she's a bad cook. Fantastic.
Oh wait, there's also that pilot Julian has the hots for, although I'm not far enough in the show to have seen much of her. Overall though, I don't see how you can argue that the show has really really strong gender biases.

Felt depressed by quality of new anime. Rewatched Cowboy Bebop and now in the middle of Wolf's Rain. Going to follow up with Escaflowne and then end with Evangelion. Any old timers on here with more suggestions?

If you want older, watch Legend of the Galactic Heroes.

IMO, the only way I can see someone saying this show is having a gender bias, is if you think "Women aren't drafted into military, therefore its sexist". Women aren't even drafted into the Military in the real world, so why would you expect them to be in LOGH? Also it seems to me like you are completely ignoring the fact that there are women in high political positions. They have already shown examples of women in high political positions in Jessica, and another woman who was prominent on the High Council (who was very vocal in causing Amlitzer).
There are other examples I could use, but they involve spoilering you, so I won't say them.

If 13 episodes fits your definition of short, then I'd say Bacanno! It's much more "western" in style than many other shows. And as mentioned before, Miyazaki films. You can't go wrong with him.

And there clearly are female soldiers, otherwise wtf is Fredrica doing there. + Show Spoiler +Oh right, token love interest.

Heh started watching LOGh on the side since I see so much talk about it, so far it looks decent although i was kinda dumbfounded when everyone was using "Watashi", but then I realized it is in a military formal so the feminine base is disregarded xD
|
...what feminine base, watashi is pretty gender neutral.
Finished rereading YuYuHakusho as a reminder of my younger days, I completely forgot how this series just crashed at burnt after some point.

I would recommend REC, It is probably one of my favourite short animes since its like 9 episodes, and each episode is like 10 minutes. http://myanimelist.net/anime/710/REC Like despite being so short, it was really entertaining to watch and it felt longer than just 90 minutes. (Not a bad thing)

Also, the fact that men are drafted doesn't mean that women can't enlist. Obviously women can enlist, as see by Fredrica's presense. Obviously women aren't drafted seeing as how she is pretty much the only female there.

Watched Gosick ep3, more gothic loli and the "mystery" is solved. After 3 episodes I can see that it seems to be an average story. But it has nice visuals and a gothic loli, so I'll continue to watch it.

Lolis with boobs? You just ruined lolis for me, man.

Also, Outlaw Star had no ecchi in it at all. I mean, its not one of those animes where you have a naked girl piloting a space ship, or anything.

Another good recommendation for a series that has no fanservice, breasts or lolis at all would be Strike Witches!
