Yes I did. I believe that's where Toradora came from.

The show starts off with a battle, and then starts introducing the characters and giving you their backstory and stuff, and there are alot of characters (and alot of names) in this show. Thankfully the show doesn't really NEED good animation, and its one of the most epic shows I have ever watched. Its ranked #2 on MAL for a reason (it was #1 for a while before FMA:B).

For decades, the Galactic Empire has been locked in an interstellar war with the Free Planets Alliance, a conflict that involves thousands of spaceships and millions of soldiers on both sides. Two new commanders enter the conflict with great hopes: Imperial Admiral Reinhard von Lohengramm and the FPA's Yang Wen-Li. As they deal with superiors and subordinates, maneuver through complicated political arrangements, plot strategies, and win battles, each will be tested, and ultimately, changed, by the reality of war. Plus, its only 110 episodes! Also, there are no robots in this show if you are wondering.

The synopsis makes it sound awesome. You remember that episode of Haruhi, Day of Sagittarius or w/e? The one where they were playing a video game, and had the fleet battles and stuff, with the Opera music playing when it was showing the ships shooting at each other? That stuff was a big homage to LoGH. The anime has sad moments, very epic moments, lots of good characters, lots of depth to the plot. When I was around episode 50 or something, the plot had built up to what would have been the Climaxic finale of any normal anime, but the show wasn't even half way done at that point. And the part I was at isn't even consider to be the best part of the show, so it only gets better (apparently the final season is supposed to be the best).

That stuff was a big homage to LoGH. 90% of Haruhi season 1 is a parody of something or another. Yuki/Mikuru are obvious parodies, and half the episodes parody one genre or another (sports ep with literal Deus ex Machina, where "trying hard" is worthless in the end, outlandish romance scene, ridiculous fight scene, joke space battle scene, etc.) And almost every episode has a reference to something or another. There's a list of all the specific references somewhere which I can't currently find for some reason, but for example the books Nagato is reading in each ep generally relate to the ep. Edit - man that was incoherent.

To my surprise, it is actually really good in my opinion but the biggest problem are the militia being chill while being shot at. How does the Valkyria Chronicles anime compare to the original game? Same story or did they change a lot, especially where the characters are concerned? Seconding LoGH. Even if it is 110 episodes and I still haven't completed it, it is one of the best and grandest human-centric space opera stories ever told. The 110 episodes are nearly without any filler, because LoGH was a 110 episodes OVA and not a TV series. So it is mostly filled to the brink with plot. The animation quality is also very good for such an old series. It is not comparable to "modern" anime, but I wouldn't say that it induces eye cancer. Old shows like Armored Trooper Votoms for example are much much worse in my opinion (of course old animation can have it's own charm). About Now and Then, Here and There... Yes, you could watch it. Probably best after or before Grave of the Fireflies. :| Unless + Show Spoiler + you want some lighthearted and upbeat anime for fun. In that case they are probably not the best recommendations. Random stuff I've watched in the last week or so: Sola (very nice, got this from one of the charts, was a good surprise and well done), Eden of the East (another one from the charts, also good). Also I've always wanted to see more mecha stuff, so I watched the first Gundam movie instead of the first series. Fairly interesting but really really old. Got the other two original movies but haven't watched them yet. Also took a look at Votoms because it was recommended, but after the first episode it just didn't click yet. I guess the old art is a part of it. I guess I've to check out the charts again and I've yet to watch the last 10 episodes of Eureka Seven. Nearly forgot about that, oops. Since I'm somehow in a "I want robots to beat the shit out of each other"-mood right now, any recommendation for recent/modern-animated mecha shows, comparable to Code Geass (in battle style/art/quality, the mecha fights were awesome)? I don't know much about all the mecha series in general. I guess I've only seen Code Geass, Eureka Seven, the old Evangelions (although I've nearly forgot most of it) and as I said the first Gundam movie right now. So something that doesn't require a huge amount of background / franchise knowledge would be best.
