If you come in here looking for "anime recommendations" then please refer to this chart before posting: Anime Recommendations (as of may 2014). We also have an IRC channel called #tladt where we all hang out. The channel is on Rizon, not QuakeNet! Feel free to check it out. TLADT discord is Discord.gg

For currently airing anime, please see Anichart.net

1 bad voice actor? Really?

For starters, I agree that subs are normally better, but that reason right there is just odd. Do you think 100% of japanese seiyuus are good? Honestly, I think that since most people here are fluent in english, so we can tell good and bad voice acting in english. But since we don't speak Japanese, we don't have that same ability to pick out bad voice acting from the original audio (outside of just generally annoying voices). Maybe in general, Japanese seiyuu are "better" than english, but without speaking both languages, its next to impossible for most of us to actually fairly compare them.

And there are good dubs out there.

My thoughts exactly, are people in this thread really this snoody?

Well think of it this way. One bad voice actor in a language that you can understand versus one in one that you can't understand. The former will make you shudder, the latter you can only kind of guess how bad they are by nuance and you won't have to worry about any of the delivery. So I don't know about you, I'd much rather put up with the latter than former.

Why do you think we watch BW casted in Korean even when we can't understand?

WAIT WHAT IN THE $#@! YUNO "[big]SMASHED[big] THE WALL OF SPACE-TIME WITH A HAMMER"?! I.....what? I prematurely assumed that the manga had ended, what in the actual f--- is going on.

Wow. So meta. So we get a credits roll in the manga and then.....that happens. Okay so I didn't completely understand 100% what was happening, but I got that there was a deus (oh ze irony) ex machina ending and that they transcended space-time and shizzle. Alrighty then I get what happened overall I guess even though some of the events were sort of confusing.

Also I completely understand why you guys were annoyed by my early posting habits after having observed the same kind of posting myself. Just sayin'. Hard to describe, something about being an annoying little squirt :|

What? You're not unpopular D': ...right?

Some ppl in the thread are just bullies T_T

Probably more popular than me anyway now that blast is gone ;_;

People never disliked Blast for yuri spam, annoying as those are. Blast was a pain because he was pretty retarded.

I am permabanned on IRC and kinda got bullied out of the thread once already My love for Fate/Zero brought me back though, %¤#" the haters right.

Oh wow... why would they do that, they're not that mean, I don't think ._.

Also BrTarolg you too, seriously? D:

And yeah, 1 bad voice actor is enough to make me switch as well. Actually even if they're fantabulous at voice acting, I still prefer just Japanese. Anime in English is just awkward to me.

I am uneducated and my views on anime are too extreme to be allowed in a non-public space like the private IRC of these guys I suppose. My fault more than anyones though, it's not that they are mean, I am just not a popular guy.

As for dubbing, I can't do it usually. I want to hear the original direction the voice actors are trying to do justice, not poorly paid english voice actors trying to emulate it. Also, anime girls in english get unbearable real quick, japanese is just so beautiful, even whiny chicks sound good. The only dubbed thing I've seen is Princess Mononoke, which I had to watch in english, but that dub blew my mind it was so good. Better than almost any animated movie I've seen in any language I thought, especially Gillian Anderson as the motherwolf was amazing.

EDIT: Just thinking of what some jackoff struggling LA actor would do with Caster from Fate/Zero gives me shudders for instance..

A quick survey just now showed that a total of one person remembers who you are, the others just know you for Denmark. So whatever you did, you are not nearly as infamous as Shauni.

Apparently Kaal hates you with a passion though? News to me though.

No idea who Shauni is... I think I got on this guy Kaals nerves, especially during the hour or so I was allowed in his IRC channel which he enjoys telling people he is the master of.

You must've pissed him off pretty badly somehow because usually he doesn't do anything of that kind, I'll go with impressive for this feat.

I got couple of animes that have dubs by default and i have to change it to subs. Most of the time I notice it's dub from before any talking has been done, if that tells you anything... Not to really hate upon those who use dubs, I understand that in some countries people are not used for subs and its quite sad because I think stories especially should be embraced as originall as they were. Like in best case you would not use even subs, since there's sometimes little misleading things in subs too compared to what was originally said.

I usually watch subs over dubs, since I don't speak japanese they pretty much always sound better to me. But cowboy bebop is one of the exceptions, where the dub far outdoes the sub. The english voice actors are all top quality and fit their characters really well, while I found that the japanese voice actors didn't fit the characters at all. ( Though I did watch a bit of the japanese dub after I had seen the whole english show). Usually dubs are bad, but not in this case, trust me on that.

This so much haha, fantastic example. BW casted in English unless the casters are great is so bad ;_;

It's not being snobby so much as honestly preferring one over the other...I don't even watch that much comparatively.

Actually another series that comes to mind is DBZ. Say what you will about the dub, and maybe I'm biased because I watched a lot of it with dubs before watching the Japanese version with subs, but the Japanese dub nearly made me spit out whatever beverage was conveniently in my mouth at the time.

And yeah, Korean casters are amazing. I've heard Chinese and English casters and on the whole they sound like nerds mildly excited by whatever is happening sometimes, while Korean casters sound like totally baller nerds freaking out about the greatest thing in the world at the moment.

I guess this is kinda turning into a derail here but for some reason Korean casters can get REALLY excited and it sounds completely legit and in place. When english casters get REALLY excited they usually just sound like they are overdoing it. This might just be because I don't understand korean, but to me korean casting just sounds 10x better.

edit* for example when they start shouting uuuHH reava reava uuh playguuu uhuh iojdha hamnida, english casters just cant do that.

I dont watch enough animes that actually have an english dub as an option so to me its kind of like a luxury,
like "holy shit anime style artwork with ENGLISH words!"
jap subs and english dubs both give a different feel to the anime regardless of how proper the translation is.

to me, hearing the english words actually being said gives the overall anime a different feel than if I was just reading subs
I dont have any problem reading or anything like that, its just that english is my first language and hearing is different than reading subs, and because 99% of the animes I watch are subbed, its nice once in a while to just have the option of english audio.

Kinda lazy to ask for this, but has there been any "masterpiece" animeseries the last 3 years or so? As in 9/10 or 10/10 series. Watched a lot of anime some years ago...(My favorites were Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, 12 kingdoms, Hajime No Ippo and Berserk (manga better ofc), but haven't really watched anything, or even payed attention to what's been running....so help would be appreciated.

Watched the last airbender series+legend of korra, dunno if it's classified as anime since it's american, but damn it was fun to watch an entertaining cartoonseries again, after a lot of "serious" (but very good ofc) HBO-series.

@Digitalis

Have you ever wondered if that feel was not the original feel that said anime was going for? >.>

A few people have been telling me that the FLCL dubs are good. I was watching them yesterday. Holy cow they were god awful.

Well that's you opinion But it is definitely not to be watched with the same mindset as for 99% of others anime. If you watch CB, you put the sound very loud or watch it with headphones, and you must enter some kind of contemplative mode to enjoy it.
CB is not about the action or even the story that much, it's about the art of mixing music and images.

......Why is it so special that it deserves special treatment for watching? You're making it sound like some intellectual piece when it was honestly very simple and not very complicated.

;s wat? Hmm I didn't have this feeling at all I'm afraid. Though i guess you could view CB as an artwork. ( isn't all anime to some extent?) Personally, the characters and action made it a great anime for me.

This discussion comes up way too much.

I watch dubs usually for a few reasons. One, I watch anime with friends, and don't want to pause so they can go back and read if they're slow. Several of them also prefer dubs for whatever reasons of their own, so I try not to be confrontational.

Two, I watch anime while doing other stuff. Coding/gaming/reading forums on one screen, or reading manga/book on the couch, and then I can enjoy anime at the same time even if I'm not watching the screen 100% of the time.

Three, I generally just think it's easier. I watch anime to relax, not to speed read and hope I don't miss any action while reading subs. That's kind of lazy as an excuse, but it's a reason.

I'm not saying dubs are better, they are on occasion fucking terrible, but they're convenient.

One thing I thought was hilarious was TK from Angel Beats saying random lines in broken English, with a surprisingly perfect accent. One of the few pretty cool things about it.

I've tried dubs that some people said were "good", for example someone said Black Lagoon had a good dub... could stand it for about 10 seconds before I switched back to normal. In this case I think I'm mainly just so used to the original voices, but

I've tried other "good dubs" as well, but I keep switching back to subbed... only case when I watched dubbed was when I rewatched pokémon (lol), thought it felt really weird to watch it in jap so I switched back to swe dub... which I guess is terrible but hey it's nostalgy points.
