School days has nothing to do with real life. It's most certainly not based off of a real story.
What did happen was that a real jeuvenille murder case did happen before the final episode and it bore a few similarities to the final episode of the anime (still unaired at the time). The tv station switched it with some tour boat programming for that time slot giving birth to the nice boat meme.
And yes I can read moon runes pretty good. Hell, I live on the moon.
About that Japanese page, wasn't that dug up after the fact and matched with school days afterwards. Like a media sensationalist story.

Is un-go worth it? I watched the first 4 episodes, and then my rl schedule got complicated. I really liked it though, it's just that the case every week kind of pissed me off since it seemed like there was no actual plot, or at least there was a hint to a plot that was never revealed.

The mom is definitely playing dumb about not knowing Inori, and idk if Inori is in on it also, unless somehow Shu and Inori both lost their memories?
Anyways, I loved the introductions of the mom and the seitokai. Both had awesome fanservice and both seemed to add something interesting to the plot. Yeh yeh yeh! I love where things are going.

Un-go has nothing to offer in terms of mystery. In fact, all the reasons I like it are completely unrelated to the mystery aspect. It does a pretty good job of worldbuilding, and the themes it explores are usually handled ok. It's also got a couple of really good scenes (cinematography-wise) which I think were pretty successful in driving home the point the writer wanted to make and in eliciting certain emotions.
