Yeah, I'm a bit frightened to read a wiki without getting major spoilage. The books are a definite buy for me as soon as university lets me read something else than science papers.

I also absolutely hate the kid playing Joffery, he screams of obnoxiousness and deserves a good slap. Also completely fantastic.

The books are great and if you are going to buy them then i'd abstain from online resources.

Also the soundtrack matches this amazing series perfectly. I really like it. Without going too deeply into spoilers or backstory that hasn't been revealed yet, the people in Westeros predominately worship the Seven, who is one deity represented by 7 facets - the Father, the Mother, the Warrior, the Maid, the Smith, the Crone, and the Stranger. However, in the North many people worship the Old gods, who are nameless and associated with the weirwoods (where we see Ned Stark cleaning his sword Ice in episode 1). Catelyn and Cersei both come from the south, so they both worship the Seven. The different religions are briefly touched on during a scene in Winterfell's weirwood where Catelyn says to Ned "After all these years, I still feel like an outsider when I walk in these woods" or something to that effect.

Also the soundtrack matches this amazing series perfectly. I really like it. Westeros has 2 religions: The Old Gods and The Seven. The way it works is that the First Men were the original inhabitants of Westeros. They had fought a war with The Children ages ago. Think of The Children as forest spirits or whatever. Eventually after a long war the 2 of them worked together. The Children taught The First men their religion. These became the Gods of the First Men aka The Old Gods. Later on Westeros was invaded by the Andals. Men from another part of the world. The Andals fought the First Men and Children and almost conquered them. They brought with them their own religion referred to as The Faith or The Seven. The Children lost a lot of forests and important trees called weirwoods. The Andals pushed the First Men/Children all the way back up to The North past a point on the map called The Neck. From here the Andals couldn't conquer them anymore. However everything south of The Neck became Andals land. Every area in modern times follows The Seven. The only regions that don't are in The North and they follow the Old Gods. Almost all regions do but a few don't. I left out a few details that might be spoilers but knowing the religions of Westeros itself isn't a major plot killer. Also this site is spoiler free and has a lot of background info for the TV viewers. I really like the behind-the-scenes and house-guides and such that HBO has done. Helps with names too (I thought Arya was something like "Ahh-Yawh" lol)

Should be said that the Faith/The Old Gods aren't the only two religions around, there are several others that'll plop up as the series progress.

I just don't see why the burden is on other people to make sure you aren't spoiled on a TV adaptation of an incredibly popular book. I've read the books years ago, so i dont really care that much about spoiler-tags, but knowing the four books and the revelations they offer, a single spoiler in this thread _can_ have a magnitude to ruin great parts of the whole show. An lastly, this isnt an elitist-"season one tv show but has to read all 4 books"-thread so things really should be kept in spoilertags that, as somebody already mentioned should be named accordingly, and reduced to a minimum.
