I can't remember, but did they recognize The Hound at the gate or did he say who he was ? Because remember that most people don't travel too far from home and probaly wouldn't even recognize there own king in those times.
Sad though we will part ways with two characters I loved: Tywin and The Hound.
The Hound / Arya coupling was great and very entertaining. I suppose she'll find her destiny in Braavos. I cannot imagine what kind of training she'll get there but I am sure it's definitely going to be a rough start.
I knew the second Tywin called Shae a whore that this would not end well. Also, every time Tyrion and Tywin talk, he changes his statement to suit his needs. Tyrion is called "his son" once, the next time he's "never going to inherit Casterly Rock". Same here, trying to sweet-talk his way out of this situation. To kill him on the toilet though - that's just shitty. Then again after all the pain he caused Tyrion I guess he's not going to give him the satisfaction of a clean death.
Varis going with Tyrion is going to be interesting too. Also, since I think Varis said to Eddard Stark that he "serves the realm since no one else will" he probably has some plan that the realm will benefit with Tyrion being alive.
I suppose he leaves King's Landing because the bells are ringing? That probably means the city is in danger and he has no interest in being there when the fighting happens - at least in most small towns in earlier ages that was the one thing which could warn people ( e.g. as an alarm - most times the church ). We may not have seen any of it but I am already excited about that. More battles can never be a bad thing ( as evidence: episode 9 this season ).
And now to wait a year for more. I ( sometimes ) hate TV ;D

I believe the bells are used when either the King or the Hand dies. Could be wrong though...

Oh, you know what I didn't think of that. I believe you could be right. Judging from the time that passed until someone might have discovered Tywin's body that could fit. Nice catch!

anyway after this episode I definitely understand why so many bookreaders like stannis the fucking mannis.
Tyrion - Shae+Tywin scene was meh after all the hype it got but from what I read on reddit it seems the D&D changed a lot and left out an epic scene most book readers expected to be the last scene.
Kind of surprised it wasn't Daeny that got the very last scene of the season once again but considering how excited I am for more Bravos and more Arya adventures, she deserved it!
I doubt he defeated the whole 100k, I mean a 100k person camping + supplys takes a fuck ton of place. Like a lot. It makes more sense to me to think that Stannis' army attacked the vanguard and went straight to the heart (where Mance was) using the advantage of surprise, cavalry, training and discipline. Remember that they have made a very clear point of the wildlings being "free folk", poeple that goes along doing what they want and only Mance is keeping them united towards a single goal : safety. Upon seeing cavalry lines charging towards them, some obviously abandonned and fled (most of them actually, it didn't look like much of the wildlings where trying to fight, we saw a lot being slauthered while running).
So I guess it's safe to assume most of the free folk just ran away. I mean even if they were unarmed and sleeping, the slaughter of a 100k should take quite some time.
Manse was probably at the front with everyone else far behind doing whatever in the old camp. They attacked at night, but they didn't start right at the front, while Stannis attacked the front of the forest.
Manse had no reason at all in the world to expect anyone to attack. He knew pretty much that the Crows couldn't go offensive against him, he was sat doing nothing. Stannis was able to attack because Manse was way off guard, and his army was behind him in their old camps, while he was at the front keeping an eye around and preparing for the next assault. Makes perfect sense that hardly anyone was around and that it was an easy battle against only a few wildlings. Plus horses are way faster than people, so any people behind them in their camps would never make it to help with Manse's defence.

Yeah, the more I think of it, the more it makes sense.
War hasn't really scared Varys in the past, he stayed when King's Landing was under siege from Stannis. His network of spies is known and respected somewhat, any ruler could use that so it's unlikely that he would be killed.
Quite a different story with the Hand dying. Varys knows Tyrion would never hurt Tommen, so Hand it is. Varys pictures Cersei now in power, and being the smart man he is, just gtfo. Knowing her craziness, especially about Tyrion, he doesn't want to take any chance to be linked with him escaping and killing Tywin.
I've just watched the last episode...And I'm taking my hat off...That was amazing!
Like 25 pages before I was asking about Stannis and his words that he is the only person who shits about the wall, that he seems like dropped this and suddenly, that huge army! Unexpected for me. Saving of Tyrion, I was thinking between Jaime and Varys, but the both included. Impressive feelings of Varys in the end, when he took a step on the ship to save his ass, just incredible!
Got a question, how much we gonna wait till season 5? :O
Also, as a general historical point. In the olden dayes, there was no TV, no newspapers. One of the most common ways to get someone's image out there is coins, which they don't really have since there's a different king every 5 minutes, and there doesn't seem to be a fiat currency, only actual gold and silver.
So it makes perfect sense for 99% of people to have no clue what any "major" people look like. I mean maybe the Hound from reputation of having a half burned face and being huge, and Tyrion because he's an imp, but really there is no reason to expect ANY recognition of ANYONE in a time without an effective means of image transmission. Especially given the small timescale.
And 99% of these characters are doing a big thing or are well known within a sphere, not across all of the 7 kingdoms. Someone in the North doesn't care much about some famous dude in King's Landing unless it's the king or one of the major lords. No one would recognise Stannis' advisor, because he's a nobody to them, etc etc.
From an historic perspective, apart from no one trying to get their image out there as king (which they have no time to do), zero image recognition is the state of play. If people did recognise anyone "major", THAT would be what would seem weird.
Also, Varys knows (from when Tyrion was Hand and testing all the small council members) that Pycelle is loyal to Cersei. Littlefinger is gone but always a threat. Tywin, ruthless and calculated as he was, was at least fairly predictable in what type of things he will and will not do. There's no such guarantee with Cersei, and the game completely changes with Tywin's death.
Meanwhile Varys still has spies and contacts in Essos, so he probably realized he can assume a position of strength there. Especially if he works with Tyrion. (Otherwise, Tyrion just gets to Essos and...knows nobody. His story wouldn't get very far.)
OMG that episode was so insanely fulfilling and plot-advancing, even though as others have lamented we have lost Tywin and The Hound, two of my more liked characters.
When Stannis' army came marching through Mance's, that was insane. And the skeletons...that was enough to get me to want to revamp my undead army in warhammer...that little girl looked so weird but I am so excited to find out about what those people can do. Bran fly?
So upset about Dany with her dragons too poor little things. So many things to discuss omg...can't take how much lol.

Haha now I can't help but imagine his thoughts when we see him sat on the boat, leaving : "Aw, I liked that game."
If he really serves the realm, he could go to Daenerys to see if she would make a worthy ruler. Probably wouldnt risk it, considering he indirectly tried to kill her a couple times... Can't see what he would gain by working with Tyrion. The man has no money, and can't really say who he is anymore, 'cause I don't see Cersei just letting him go like that. He will most likely be chased after, hard...
A point that my gf raised that seems completely legit to me: was Shae acting on Tywin's orders for the entirety of him knowing her? Tywin set up his son with a surefire weakness that he would always have control of. She fell in 'love' with him very quickly. She was always so sure she wanted to stay in KL even though it was extremely dangerous. She was extremely vindictive at the trial, beyond what one would imagine a 'scorned' lover to be.

I was not a fan of the Skeletons though. The CGI reminded me of a 70ies Sinbad or Argonauts film. They should have just gone with the Zombies they had before.
