So Xaro Xhoan Daxos promises Daenerys he will share the wealth in his vault with her so they can take over Westeros, if she agrees to marry him. It later turns out his great wealth was a lie, and his actual goal was to kill the thirteen and become king of Quarth. However what I don't understand is where marrying Daenerys came into his plans. Without the wealth he could not get her to Westeros, and after her finding out about the lies the marriage would never happen. Was that just a random dead end plot?
Something very small, but it has stuck in my head and is annoying me.
Is this really a book readers question? I don't get how everyone is sending him away when he's asking about the plot of the series. If you really want to separate the book from the show, then the answer would either be something obtainable from the show or it is indeed a dead end plot. Stating "the answer is in the books" and sending him away is not good enough.
These kind of threads on TL are always a bit problematic between seasons. There is just not that much to discuss about.
I tried to answer him his question via PM, not sure if its correct but it worked at least in my mind . And on a side note i think the "Xaro Xhoan Daxos" arc is one of the, maybe the, weakest storyline of the whole franchise anyway.
I think I can say that if he just googles the story line of that character in the book wiki and the show wiki, nothing substantial will be spoiled and he'll get his answer. Maybe he's correct that it's a bit of a dead end.

Not a great idea. Spoilers can be found in the first page of google results for some characters. Also A Wiki of Ice and Fire is filled with spoilers. The pages are organized by book so you can avoid some that way but the info box will also contain their death date and location. Tower of the hand lets you filter pages by how many books you've read or seasons you've watched so it is safe. Game of thrones wiki is also show only information.

Also, can anyone suggest a book or series that is very similar to A Game of Thrones in plot, political intrigue, scope, etc.?
AFAIK, the next few books aren't ordered by chronology, but the series are going to follow the timeline instead, so the fifth season will start the blending of the rest of the books.
The most similar series I've read (disclaimer, I haven't read longer than the show has come) is the Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan. It is less gritty and more archetypically fantasy, but the scope is insane. There's something like 3000 named characters in those books.
Thank you for the show info! Also, you're not the first to recommend The Wheel of Time -- many real friends/acquaintances of mine have suggested that series, but I am intimidated by the length until I have some more free time on my hands in the next year, haha. Thank you for the suggestion.

Yeah, the length of the series is quite daunting. All series and books have a slowed down middle act, with tension building and things getting into place for the plot resolution. In WoT this part is like 3500 pages long... You have to have patience reading it.
I think this has been explained before, but can someone please explain this again:
Bolton's bastard let Theon "escape". Then when his soldiers caught Theon he "saved" him. Then brought him back to be tortured again.
What was the point of that little escapade? Did he want info about the Stark boys? Killing 5 of your own men seems a bit too much for such information imo.

To have fun and be as evil as possible, basically.

He's a vicious sadistic bastard who gives no shit about the lives of his own men, and merely wants to torture Theon as much as possible. Giving him false hope and then taking it away is pretty horrifying.
dont read any comments if you see Game of Thrones Trailers. first comment on the second trailering spoiling entire book. though you might already know there are spoiling ppl out there; just wanted to say it. s4 is gonna be huge im so pumped.
God I hate Daenerys for that smug look on her face when she says "I will do what queens do, I will rule". So annoying how entitled she feels just because of her birth.

I hate this people. Especially someone who writes it on purpose just to ruin some peoples experience like this one. I personally don´t really care about spoilers at all because i have a horrable addiction to netpicking everything about a show and predicting it in my head. And unfortunatly i am pretty good at it .

Yeah, probably has nothing to do with her have dragons and armies and tons of loyal followers....

But she only claims to be a queen and has the right to rule because of who she was born as, so he's right. Part of the reason she's an interesting character and not a Mary Sue is that she has flaws like this: she's incredibly arrogant, despite being constantly challenged to make calls she doesn't know how to make. She makes bad and poor decisions frequently, and so far she's lucking out okay, but that could change at any moment. She's building a powerful army, but how long will she really last?

Meh she also does this when she is in a very bad position. Actually especially then. She goes all defiant when things are looking grim or she gets refused something and screams "I am the blood of the dragon" or similar.
But I guess it is one of the good things about these characters that they somewhat polarize.

Its more a sign of good acting and really good writing. She is a bit inconsistent but it always feels on purpose. Its like the guy who plays Joffrey, if the audience hates your character so much you are doing something amazingly right.
For me personally Danys storyline is amazing because i am usually on a constant rant on stories who involve "freeing slaves" but somehow i still like it a lot. Or I am just looking forward for the possibility that she really makes it to Westeros, lands on the cost and all of her elite desert soldier say "what is this white shit? why is it so fucking cold here? What the heck is winter? Naaa conquer by yourself we are going back were this winter shit doesn´t exist."

She claims to be a queen because of her birthright, she tries to become a queen because of everything else. Look back at how she was in season one. Does that really look like a person who thinks she deserves to be queen because of her blood? No, of course not, she's only doing this because everyone else has basically forced the role of queen onto her, and she's been convinced she's suitable for that role.
