It's self-defeating, yes, but I thought it was intentionally so to point out the hypocrisy of the Jedi order and lend validity to Anakin's view that they are stagnant and weak. A lot of the other writing then renders any good qualities of that line irrelevant, but, in theory, it's good. A lot of people have talked about how the Jedi are shown to be hypocrites, but while as a viewer, I see contradictions and hypocrisy, I'm not certain the film intend to portray the Jedi as hypocrites. Where in the films does it undercut the Jedi's views so that we as an audience are supposed to be against what they are saying and doing? I'm against the idea that attachment is inherently bad because I'm not a Buddhist monk, but in universe, it is never revealed that this teaching is a bad thing. Similarly, Obi Wan fails the law of non-contradiction by saying "Only Sith deal in absolutes." Either the statement is not true because Obi Wan is a Jedi and is also dealing in absolutes or else Obi Wan is dealing in absolutes because he is also a Sith... but he is never called on it by Anakin. Thus while I think the line is bs, (and thought so on my first theatrical watch- it really jumped out to me as stupid) there is no indication that the film means us to take it as stupid or hypocritical. I think it was meant to sound cool. IMO, given all the other stuff thrown in just to look/sound cool, that's it. You can certainly argue Lucas intended that added layer of depth but I think it was just a lack of thought. Vader losing half his body is kind of a weird balance. On one hand, it's part of the reason the Emperor can control him - Isn't full strength Vader supposed to be the most powerful force user ever? Vader's power is supposed to be significantly weakened by losing so much of his body. On the other hand, if he were that powerful to begin with the way he loses it is a bit underwhelming.

We have this epic fight between the two "brothers" that we've waited forever for and it's settled by a sword mechanic that has never before been mentioned, will never again be mentioned and makes absolutely no sense. Why wouldn't Jedi just wander around carrying a pop up crate to stand on in case they run into a Sith? Will this lead to a stepladder arms race? How about Obi Wan wins by skill or Anakin chokes or something? But nope, higher ground = autowin suddenly. Lucas had to nerf high ground advantage in later episodes because it was too powerful. Some of us purists still pine for those pre-nerf days before lightsaber duels became lame and coinflippy. It used to be skill-based.

Lets talk pre 19hd: * An army that commands the highground in general has a better view of the battlefield. * Charging downhill is a lot more powerfull than charging uphill and it is by far less taxing. * Comanding the highround also means a missile advantage in range and power. * The army on the hill can also roll down stones or other contraptions to kill or demoralize the enemy. If you take the mythbuster setup the man on the lowground has the advantage because he has more reach. If you imagine the reach of a sword as a sphere emanating from your shoulders, the one on the lowground always has the feet of the enemy in range first. Also: ![]()

Not necessarily the best example or bit of proof, but in a lot of sports having a lower center of gravity (being shorter for example) is considered a big advantage.

I'm actually struggling with which sports (outside of wrestling/grappling/being a RB in NFL) in which being short would ever be considered an advantage? Low center of gravity has more to do with being able to change directions quickly and being more difficult to topple. However, being tall gives a superior reach and coupled with strong leg muscles you can still get a decently low center. The advantages of being on top of a hill was listed nicely in a post above.

My 8 year old said "dad, that was pretty much the same as the first Star Wars except with a bigger Death Star." With absolutely no coaching even an 8 year old could see the lack of originality. Side note: I'd like blizzard to hire Abrhams to make the next Starcraft game. He'd take brood war and copy it completely with updated graphics and we'd all love him for it.

The scenario was not necessarily high ground vs low ground, as this would imply them being on the same space, or on the same hill/land and one was higher, vs the other lower. this scenario was more or less luke being forced to JUMP onto land in which it guarantees obi-wan gets to hit first. if luke didn't jump he'd fall into the lava abyss, but even this doesn't quite accurately depict high ground vs low ground because of the flasy moves luke attempted to pull when jumping. he tried to do a flip OVER obiwan, and then turn around and slash. there is no probable way that obiwan facing his direction was going to not hit first. the time it takes to do a flip then turn around is retarded but i'm guessing if lucas wanted to show him getting both his legs and an arm chopped in 1 hit this was the only way to do it. i personally didn't attempt to nitpick this off the sole fact lucas attempted to make it play out this way and it was a cool reference and line. cause if it were to happen any other way obiwan could just boguard the ledge and not walk up the hill, and just wait for the jump in, simply slash anakin back into the lava pit, no probable way of living in this scenario unless you somehow defy science and a jumping thrust onto land kills obiwan rofl. i'm not sure if anyone remembers the episode recently, but i rewatched it. the fight scene right BEFORE he jumps onto the land shows anakin pulling the same trick onto another platform of obiwans. so this is not a random occurrence, obiwan has seen his jump style prior to him doing it again on the hill and simply slashed him for it. not to mention this is the same move a young obiwan used against darth maul in the flukest reverse scenario in all of star wars history, to win.
