Also, DAAAAAAAYM, KUVIRA YOU MESSIN' WITH THE WRONG SWAMP GURL. I have never been so mad at a cliffhanger before. I can't wait to see the reactions of the Swamp and Toph. Even though it did not really punish Sokka for cutting down vines in TLA (probably due to his ignorance?) it wasn't on a scale like Kuvira is attempting to do. It is hopefully pretty spectacular when it happens. Will they show Toph as stronger or weaker than Kuvira though?
Yeah it was a generator. He made an EMP shockwave with the generator. The metal rod in the ground with wires around acts to intensify a magnetic field, the more loops the stronger the field if I'm not mistaken. I've always been terrible in electro-magnetic courses.

We get to see that, even after 3 years apart, most of the Team Avatar group is still ready to kick some butt. We see more lavabending as well, though why Bolin didn't just earth/lava bend them through the wall further away from the checkpoint is beyond me.
Also, the cliffhanger ending just reeks of us getting a Kuvira vs. Toph showdown, though I don't know how well that will turn out. This may be them trying to show that Kuvira is the strongest earthbender overall, assuming Kuvira and Toph do fight. + Show Spoiler +They'll probably use Suyin to end the fight early. I'd like to see Toph and Kuvira fight but it probably won't result in a clear winner.

Man I swear to god if they have toph and Kurere fight and toph loses it would be highly Un realistic. I imagine they won't fight but lookingforward to some toph kicking ass.
|
They'll probably make Toph shit all over Kuvira's army. Taking down Kuvira herself has to go to Korra for her character development and being the main character and all that jazz.
|
People are getting so upset thinking what if Toph loses. Is Toph at such a high level where it's impossible for her to lose? If Kuvira beats Toph would that make it impossible for the Avatar to beat Kuvira? Yes Toph probably is a better bender than Kuvira, but Kuvira has probably reached a level that rivals Toph and in a fight Kuvira's army could be the tipping point allow Kuvira to win. The mechs could be made of platinum, they are highly mobile and can't be easily destroyed with earth bending and have multiple ranged attacks. Plus all of Kuvira's soldiers some of which are very proficient fighters from Zaofu. Toph isn't some sort of god like the Avatar and even a fully realized Avatar can be killed.
That said it probably will be a partial, but not full defeat of Kuvira's army, they get some spirit vines after a fierce battle. Though I would be fine with Toph losing as long as she puts up a good fight.

and keep in mind toph is an old lady now. Most likely gonna end in a draw and Kuvira taking the vines
|
I'm thinking that an "Old Masters" scene in the finale is more likely. Toph can't fight both Kuvira and her army, and there's really no reason to agree to a 1v1.
|
toph is the single best earthbender alive right now i find it highly unlikely that kuvira could hold anything to her in combat

you mean zuko+katara will come in and we're gonna have old team avatar as well to kick kuvira's butt?

toph was the best earthbender tho, even compared to bomi right? and bomi was way older than toph is now (sure toph may not have that pure muscle body but her bending was never that style where it needed it to be)
toph did say that her daughters never got the hang of metal bending, (when other then kurvia they outclassed everyone) kurvia's metal bending shouldnt be close to tophs to beat her in a one on one.
Plus tbh i dont think we've seen tophs peak in TLA she was 12 and ends in the comics at 15, now shes freaken like 70+ shes definitely gone beyond mastering earth and metal compared to the old masters of TLA and their elements. (i personally think toph is even more favoured vs other earth benders, not only because she knows that style of bending in and out, but shes basically connected to the earth you cant even begin to earth bend without her already knowing)
Kurvia's not mid class bender ofc but toph imo should take it easily, even if theres an army behind her she can just retreat into the swamp and outbend them that way (may not be her style of fighting tho)
She only has trouble with airbending attacks, or air projectiles that she cant fell through the earth (mechs shooting tasers doesnt count cause the mech is still connected to the ground and its been shown through that she can even sense organic outlines, so the thing has to be completely airborne, but i think the swamps trees and limited air space when they're on the ground should just cover that.)
edit: Shes just been spending time with the whole world tree right? she should know that kurvia was coming

I didn't believe Korra and Asami was a thing until this episode. That not so subtle blush though.
I would be impressed if they end up together by the end of the season, introducing such a controversial topic into a "kids" cartoon. I hope this happens.

well they're both pretty hot for a cartoon characters

but fck this season is looking so good

Ever since it was mentioned that platinum can't be metal bent I was always waiting for a Toph appearance where she bends it.

I don't think this is Chekhov's gun material. They've been used. Katara served to get Korra back up on her feet (at least physically), Zuko... well, he did appear often in Book 3, and might still have something going on with his daughter, plus he doesn't really measure up anymore. As for Toph, she's clearly not done yet, but she's also served a great deal already.
Anyway, about the platinum bit, it reminded me of something interesting. In Book 1 of LoK, when Hiroshi Sato lures the whole group in his underground warehouse to unleash his mechatanks on them, he points out they are made out of platinum, and says to Lin "Not even your renown mother could bend a metal this pure". If it turns out that she could, as some people suspect, it would be some really cool foreshadowing right there.
To be honest, I don't know what I expect. I seriously doubt there will be a 1v1 between Kuvira and Toph. Kuvira offered to duel Korra because it was a huge show for the future of a city, and a lot of things were at stake. She needed to handle them in a cautious manner while showing good leadership. In this case though... it might be Toph, but it's also an old lady living in a swamp. I'm going to go on a completely unfounded limb and predict she'll surrender in some way.
I'm definitely looking forward to the next episode though.

I don't think Korra and Asami are going to be a thing. There has been a lot of talk about how Korra is a strong female character who's main focus isn't who she is dating or going to date. Her just having a female best friend and no immidate love interest is nice and refreshing.
And plus they don't need to, the fan fiction will resolve the problem.
|
Pretty sure the whole Korra/Asami thing spawned from how horribly they bumbled both character's romances with Mako. Like, cut out the boring third wheel, stick with the two interesting characters.
After that, it was the writer's doing what they do best in the Avatarverse, dangling a carrot for the fan groups.
Sorta like how they teased every possible pairing in TLAB.
