Watching Dota 2 today the lanes (number of people in them) and roamers/junglers(?) seemed to differ quite a lot in every game. How does laning work in Dota? 2-1-2 is most common in pubs, but in competitive anything goes. Even 4-1-0 (4 in one lane, 0 in another) or has been run successfully. There was even one game at eswc where a team straight up 5 man pushed from minute 0, and won.

If it's damage over time why is it that most damage over time spells don't have such an effect? Seems like it should just be one way or the other to avoid confusion.

I don't know, but in sc2 it's much clearer to me what i need to do to improve and how to do it. In dota, after you know all heroes and their skills, roles, item builds... Only thing that pops to mind is getting better at last hits/denies and mini map awareness (which should be above others of the same level because we are all used to doing that in sc). So, how should i go about improving ? I am ~1600psr on http://eurobattle.net/ for reference sake P.S Talking about pub games, and playing with max 2 friends on team.

Lane positioning, lasthitting/denying, map awareness, efficiency (example: you want to spend 0 time in your base with full mana/health). See if you can find replays of high/professional level players, and just strictly follow one guy around watching his every move - this should give you an idea of how to play a given role effectively.

Watching streams quite a bit lately ![]() Fear, Demon, Dani, Kky... Another question. What counters (again in pubs) heroes like slard/ns/sb as far as carries go, not just ganking ? And huskar for that matter...some heroes really look like pub stompers to me ![]()

And huskar for that matter...some heroes really look like pub stompers to me ![]() Positioning is basically what it says on the tin - being in the right place at the right time in a fight. Let's say you're sniper, and a team fight looks like it's about to kick off, you want to be far enough away from the centre of the fight that your toy squishy form doesn't eat aoe, close enough to be able to dps the right people, and preferably awkward enough to get to that the enemy can't really do it without either ignoring someone else on your team, taking a ton of damage from your attacks, or completely fucking up their positioning. Something along the lines of hugging a treeline the opposite side of their melees, in fog, is ideal. Hard to reach, within range, away from the fight etc. It means being close enough to your team that they can help, and far enough that you don't all instantly die to aoe. map awareness and anticipation of how fights go contribute to doing it well, since you know how and where to move. Blademail and disables for all of those. Sb is rendered basically impotent by a bkb too. Good positioning helps a lot as well.

And huskar for that matter...some heroes really look like pub stompers to me ![]() lozarian mentioned positioning in teamfights, but something that's also very important is positioning in the lane. This highly depends on which lane and lane compositions you're dealing with, but some simple rules would be to not "line up" for AoE spells, to position yourself according to how pushed the lane is/the size your creepwave and to keep your opponents out of xp range if you have more people in the lane (when possible).

And huskar for that matter...some heroes really look like pub stompers to me ![]() Stopped watching DeMoN play after seeing him die 2-3 times in a game and tell the other team how dumb/bad they were for being there and killing him. These aren't the people you want to learn from. Dendi/Link stream a lot and are great/smart players. Synderen streams some as well and knows a lot, but I haven't watched his stream enough to really recommend it. Ignore positioning and everything else until you can last-hit. Just play practice games without bots until you can get 70 ck/10 in your sleep. It will force you to understand how to control the lane creeps, where you want to be to kill them, etc. At some point it will feel intuitive when you want to attack and when you need to move around to correctly last-hit consecutive creeps. Now, you know how the players/carries on the other team will be trying to move in the lane and you will be able to better support your carry when you do play support. You will farm items more quickly. Basically, you will be ready to learn the other facets of the game. Playing without being able to last-hit is like trying to learn a strategy while having bad macro in sc2. You're feeding your brain incorrect information about the strength of your hero, items, builds, etc because you're playing the basic income game poorly. Your understanding of the rest of the game will be off because your learning will be based on a poor foundation.
