Dota 1 this should only happen if you play switch on. Unless most bots auto disable it.

He's often played on the long lane, but he should be reasonable in any lane (putting him in the short lane is kind of a waste though, given how strong his laning is to begin with).

can u still do moves like leap and arrow backwards for potm?

He should be soloing mid.

So I should Solo with him (Solo Lane with a jungler or Solo Mid). Thanks.
What about the build, Most guides that I have checked suggest Vanguard/Blink Dagger.

After that, you can clean up grabbing lategame utility stuff like Sheepstick for your team.
Vanguard can be OK if you feel you need it, but ideally, you can just get your Blink out faster. The sooner you have Blink, the sooner you start terrorizing the enemy team with Blink->Ulti ganks.

Batrider will get hit when using his ult and/or towerdiving, so vanguard is good on him. I suggest to pick the rest of your items to fill your teams needs. So maybe arcane boots early, if you go ganking/pushing with teammates. Urn if no other of your team gets it.

when playing as lich, if i've sat the carry decently so that he has decent farm, about when should i be leaving the lane? after i get my ult?
also, phase boots or power treads for lich?

Odd, he's basically one of the best mid lane solos if not the best. With his early levels and farm he can dominate midgame. I don't really understand why you would put him side lane if he gets through the ban phase. The one or two times I've seen it happen the chinese always put him mid.

phase in general, sometime treads
well you can leave as soon as he can farm safely. you can then go put wards, check runes, pull neutrals or go gank another lane. theres plenty of stuff you can do.

Your basic line of thinking should be "stay if he needs you, leave if he doesn't". This means that when you leave is highly situational--depending on what your lane opponents are doing, how far ahead you guys were in lane, what carry you have and how many of their core items before they can solo farm safely/sustainably, etc.

yeah, the issue for me is knowing what to do at what times. especially farming during lulls in ganking, i never seem to be able to get gold fast enough to get meka at a reasonable time (15~20 mins, and even maybe that's late) let alone sceptre or sheepstick.

You shouldn't plan around being able to get Scepter or Sheepstick reasonably if you're playing Lich as 4th or 5th position. They're more realistic if you're playing him in a solo lane (which is probably why they're listed in the recommended items).
As far as getting gold, remember that early game you can pick up support gold by stacking/pulling creeps, so long as you're not ditching your carry to get killed/harassed out of lane.

You might not even be the best person to get Mekansm in some games--some caster solos will get it more quickly, and it might be better for them to have it.
If you're playing support and not getting a lot of farm, you generally should be expecting to only really finish 1-2 core items. Occasionally, you might get lucky with a good Lich ulti and pick up enough gold to finish something else. Keep track of the cheaper support items that your team hasn't picked up, and consider picking those up (e.g. Drums, Urn, Medallion, etc.).
Personally I usually end up getting Drums, because despite the fact that they're good on almost anybody, I never see anyone else getting them.

alright. i'll keep drum in mind if there's another caster or WR who will be getting meka. thanks!

Which point blank aoe spells continue to work after death? I think i've seen sandking's ult and leshrac's w do it, for example, but i'm not sure.
