Also, I notice that a lot of people usually stay way far behind the creeps and I see them missing exp usually far away from their creeps why is that? typically scared of ganks? I suppose?

lol has more farm because of flash, lack of tp scrolls, and unlimited wards

So this quote reminded me of something that I've been wondering for a while

Things like attack animations have been tinkered with to a large degree. Lina got a nerf to her animation a while back (like two years ago).
Having a very large spread of animations from slow to release to long fly time means there are more things to learn and that some heroes become better or worse at certain things.

i think animations are about the same in dota 2, but the engine is smoother so it's easier to lasthit anyway
you can change attack animations in wc3 pretty easily too, it's not an engine limitation

I haven't played in awhile but apparently Agh stick gives Meepo another clone now. What happens to the clone if you drop the item? Does he disappear?

The animation time(frontswing/backswing) are the same, but visually they just feel much better. So in essence, clinkz will still suck versus sniper

lion isnt picked competitively cause the strategies of dota fit around pushing more and smoke ganking/supports with jungle. he is ganked easily mid, he isnt good in team fights and the way he was used before fit more in sniping individual heroes which isnt how dota is played now since clashes usually involve many heroes. heroes like pugna/aa/puck are seen more as solo mid heroes cause they can deal with pushes/more useful mid, and more useful in teamfights
as for first time heroes, id say stick with a hero like lich since his nukes are simple to use and he is a great hero although you might have a problem wih the attack animations.

Okay so I've played a few games now as Lich (and you can see some of my past games in the stream archives at http://www.twitch.tv/excalibur_z ) and I'm kind of getting the hang of it. I'm pretty good at last hitting although the slow attack animation and slow projectile make it hard to beat any melee or quick ranged heroes. I'm pretty good at denies as well. I'm starting to figure out when it's best to nuke versus just poke enemy heroes to keep them back, and I'm becoming more aware of the abilities each hero has and what each player should be doing with their abilities to maximize my effectiveness.
Lich seems pretty weak both in terms of health and escape options. Should I immediately be rushing for a Force Staff so I have some means of escaping from hairy situations? Rogue type heroes like Riki and obviously Anti-Mage but also Bloodseeker just destroy me. I can't seem to get away because their blinks or slows or movement speed bonuses make them impossible to shake. They seem to be pretty obvious counters to my hero, so in the laning phase, should I avoid farming in that lane if my hero's counter is also there farming?
When starting out I prefer to purchase a Magic Wand (+3 stats and instant heal/mana) and an Eat Tree small heal. I've seen some other Lich players opt for a health potion and three +1 all stats branches instead. Isn't the Magic Wand a better value because you get the same stats but also instant healing in fewer item slots? What kind of items do I want to get as Lich in the early, mid, and late game?

Don't worry so much on deaths, rather focus on whether they were good deaths. The same goes for kills/ganking. Just because you were successful in either case doesn't mean it was a good death/gank.
As for starting items, you can get wand from the side shops so I don't get it first. Typically, if I am buying the chicken, I go Tango/Salve with 4 branches. If I don't get the chicken, I go Tango/Salve/Circlet/3 Branches. If I get the solo, then that will depend on the lane I expect to see.
As for item progression, Sheep, Aghs and Veil is about as expensive as an item as you will get. Force Staff/Meka/Pipe/Ghost Wand/Blink Dagger are more commonly seen. As a more general note, knowing what items to get is something that comes with experience, there aren't any set items that Lich has to get. He's also not that item dependent, but fairly level dependent.

You gotta know your role and abuse your hero. Lich is purely a support hero and his main advantage on laning phase relies on his non-stop nuking.
"Eat" a creep before they are in the experience range of your opponents to regenerate mana and deny experience/gold from them, and keep nuking the sh*t out of one of their heroes. Also, make sure your lane partner either benefits from your nukes/slow(another nuker, a aim-like stunner) or benefits from your intense babysitting(a carry, a item-dependant ganker). Get a Magic Wand earlier on, it is a really good item on any hero.
Later on the game, aim for a Mekansm(Healing/pushing power) as well as a Power Treads and an Ultimate Orb(or a Point Booster) even later. Dieing to those "rape" heroes is not that bad, as long as your team can take care of it: Always stick together to your team and Always gank them somehow. Should a teamfight occur(or really, any fight with more than two enemies) don't hesitate to use your ultimate. Also, should a stealth-based hero be ingame, such as Rikimaru, buy Dust of Appearance - you are the supporter, that's your job.
Yes, Force Staff is a really good extension to your build if you feel like it, just take care when using it against Bloodseeker.
If you can, upgrade your Ultimate Orb to a Scythe of Vyse(Ulti Orb + Mystic Staff + Void Stone) or your Point Booster to an Aghanim's Scepter(PB + Blade of Alacrity + Ogre Axe + Staff of Wizardry), depending on whichever you bought.

I know it's been overdone to death but I'm curious: How can I get a DotA 2 beta key?
Q2:
If I currently can't get a beat key, how long do I have to wait before DotA 2 is released?

You're kidding right? No one knows for sure.

He's sometimes picked against squishy lineups. The top bans (shadow demon, aa, invoker) are pretty low hp, as is weaver, and of course cm/venge. Sometimes the other team will pick one of the top bans, weaver, a support, and an enigma, then the other team realizes they all die easily to finger.
Waste of a solo, now, though. Not great against say spec, ES, NS, clock, BM type weighted lineups.

Excalibur_Z, if you are soloing mid, I like 3 +1 branches, magic stick, 1 set of eat tree, 1 healing salve.
you don't need to turn the magic stick in to magic wand so early since you don't need the inventory space yet so you save the 150 gold, allowing you to spend it on a healing salve.
If you are in the side lanes, go with a different loadout since you can buy the magic stick in the sideshops.
I like to rush Mechasm on lich since getting headdress early is useful for keeping you in lane and an early mechasm is so powerful in low level teamfights (lower than level 10).
Ok, just watched your stream. A few things. don't leave base at the beginning without spending almost all your gold so fill up your inventory space with 3 more GG branches after salve, eat tree, and magic stick.
Level dark ritual first unless if your team is going for level 1 gank. dark ritual creep from first wave as soon as possible. always keep dark ritualling as soon as cooldown is up even if you don't need the mana since this denys.
Keep nuking as soon as cooldown is up since Lich effectively has infinite mana.

You either have to know somebody who's in one and share accounts, or have to know someone who can directly get a key for you (0.0001% chance you're a person like that if you're asking this question) Or you can win a contest (roughly 1 in 5000 chance on average, of winning one of these).
A2:

So tell me again why you would run that over any of the other heroes that you listed? Squishy heroes will die to a lot of things, Lion or not.
Also, telling a Lich to non-stop nuking is stupid, literally stupid and one of the shittiest habits to get into. Manage your mana and make it difficult for the opposing hero to stay in farm/exp range as best you can. That is not the same as non-stop nuking. In fact, I would rather wait till 3 before even attempting to nuke someone unless they just want to test you. In either case, there's not a singular way to play Lich since how you play is situational and depend on how you approach the match up. What you want to do is to put them in situation where they're actually threatened which isn't achieved by non-stop nuking.
For those who still don't get it, it's the equivalent of telling a Viper/Huskar to non-stop harass, which is just as stupid. I see it in pubs all the time where I am thinking, this drow/viper/huskar/lich is just going to be annoying and not actually threaten. Then it's like when that shit doesn't work, they're just a walking 0-cs-freebie.
Edit:
Before anyone jumps in with "that isn't what I meant, I meant X", I know what you meant, and it's still wrong. Abusing the CDs between Lich's Pact and Nova is a good way to get on Lich.

just watch Excalibur's stream. I would throw in a nuke at 2 just because that one is usually free since by the time you hit 3, your natural mana regen will put you almost at full alaready. Maybe nonstop nuking isn't the right thing to say but he should definitely be nuking more often instead of constantly conserving mana and definitely dark pacting everytime the cooldown is up.
