As the guy above me said: look at the minimap. But this is only 1 part of the whole "how to avoid ganks" section. Another part is to analize your oponents play and understand their options. If you harass them so much they cant lasthit then its possible that you get ganked soon. If they start to go agressive then there is something fishy going on. Either there is a 3rd coming to gank or they got an important level to secure a kill (like lina ultimate). This may sound like you have to think more while playing dota than while yoour math exam but after some time you will develop a feeling on when you get ganked and when it is safe.

Yeah. Good advice by all that responded. :D Always having to think more in any game makes it a hell of alot more challenging and fun even on the lower end of the matchmaking system Will work on all the things mentioned!

Does Pudge's hook damage and/or connect with invisible heroes?

Someone posted that necrobook's minions move at max speed with lycan's ult. Do hero speed boosts(grace chill for example) in general affect the minions or only lycans ult?

If an aura or whatever says it works on allied units (as opposed to allied heroes) then they should work on your minions.

What is it that makes heroes like invoker so well-suited for solo mid?

Part of it is the high range and damage combination - Shadow Fiend was a constant solo mid for a very long time after metagame changes made him less viable.

They become effective with fast levels (since they are solo in the lane), and can start controlling the pace of the game. This includes heroes such as Invoker, Queen of Pain, Templar Assassin, Storm Spirit etc.
They have abilities to push the lane with AoE spells before the runes spawn, allowing them to force the opposing solo mid to choose between gaining exp from creeps in the lane or contesting the rune. Heroes such as Storm Spirit, Queen of Pain, Morphling, Rubick etc have this. Invoker does not.
They have high mobility to get the runes quickly and/or prevent opposing heroes from getting them. Queen of Pain, Morphling can do this with blink/waveform. Templar can use traps to scout them out and control them.
They have good survivability to prevent ganks. Invoker can survive harass well with Quas and then Ghost Walk, QoP and Morphling have obvious escape skills. edit: regarding the above post, this is why Shadowfiend is not that competitive of a solo mid any more; he doesn't have any survivability.
There are more reasons but these are the first ones I can think of while I wait for this TLIH draft to be done.

[Hotkey/mechanics question]: I've started playing Dota 2 about a month ago, and I still find it really weird to use the keypad for item abilities (probably due to SCII, where the hotkeys are concentrated on the left side of the keyboard. Is there a more convenient alternative, or should I just try experiment myself?

I can't remember what the default hotkeys were, but numpad hotkeys were a relic from WC3.

Aren't the default item hotkeys zxcvbn ?

no. The default is the numpad 7-6 block that correspond to the item layout. In warcraft 3 it was longer in the vertical direction so the hotkeys were the numpad 7-2 block.

Just change it in the tool thing on the top left. Not sure if you use legacy or not if you do then sometimes the abilities over writes your item binds. I THINK you can press a key to toggle between skills and items but i have no idea. Personally i use 3,4,5, q z and one mouse button.

Just be careful with assigning number hotkeys to items (League style), it might hurt you down the road if you want to play heroes with lots of units (Chen, Enchantress, Meepo come to mind).
Personally I'm completely happy with xctgv+space for items now. y (z on american layout) for "upgrade stats".

I played SC2-->LoL-->DotA, but I was too used to 1-6 for items after LoL. I found switching to xvbgt for control groups fine (with puesdo ctrl groups z=all units, c=courier, space = hero). Its honestly more about muscle memory than anything else - legacy keys are inefficent, but many pros still use them.
Oh, don't use tab for scoreboard like I did at first. That was a painful habit to get out of -.-

I play as Venomancer, but I find survivability to be a problem. Are there any builds/tactics you'd recommend I try to help me stay alive to be credit to team?

Well venomancer is usually played as a support but if you don't play it as a support maybe windwalk is a good item to pick up i usually get things like pipe meka drums and stuff since i'm playing as a support and always use your wards to scout before you move up hills lesser chance of getting ganked even on lane place wards in the jungle. Prevents ganks.
Another thing you can do is to watch your positioning since you're a range hero try not to get too close but if you're getting sniped down there's nothing you can do :D

I'm pretty new myself to Dota 2, but I find this a problem on many ranged heroes. My solutions are generally to get a bracers, a wand and boots asap. Bracers and wand give you some much needed health, and wand can save you if you're running away and being chased on low health. Boots also: allow you to actually run away.
On Venomancer in particular: place your wards around the jungle near where you're laning. They work like mini observer wards for free (well, mana). To get your ulti off properly you will eventually want a shadow blade or force staff, but I was told that in general with Veno and Lich, your role in a team fight is to throw a good ulti and then it's ok to die for the cause. Get out if you can (and back to dpsing from a distance), but you have basically done the most important thing: a lot of damage, and it is up to the rest of the team to mop them up.
