Also, I have so far played SS more as a support hero, but he *should* be decent at mid lane, even if he is squishy as hell. Any input on SS as a mid lane hero?

Don't ever get vanguard, not only does it not work that well on ranged heroes it is also incredibly cost inefficient, if you want hp consider getting a casual vit booster or an ogre club(which you can build into a BKB later on). Shadow Shaman middle is quite decent, you can push and farm the lane easily with Ether shock and if your opponent ever leaves the lane you can kill his tower, not to mention that if you are a good player with Rhasta (or if you get lucky) you can wardtrap your opponent at 6, guarenteeing a kill on most heroes. The problem that Rhasta has is that come lategame he is not as usefull as many other solo mid heroes and that he doesn't need that much farm to be usefull, his wards will still be great and as such can be played as more of a support hero aswell.

How viable is Shadow Blade on a Shadow Shaman (or Bane): does it actually work to go invis after channeling, or should I just accept that when I start shackling (or fiend's gripping) I will get focus'd on: should I try to get a vanguard (or anything else to boost tankiness) on them instead of invis? I know the buildup can seem difficult but it is one of the most important items (along with blink dagger or force staff) that you can get on a hero like this.

A generic build order is something along the lines of, Bottle, Arcane Boots, Blink, Drums, wand, TP scroll. Skill order you want 1-1-1, max out lightning fork, wards at 6, then 8 onward max sheep then shackle last. For your ultimate if you CAN hit the ward trap (I recommend practicing in a bot game) then do it. If you know you cannot for a fact, then don't waste it, use it to push a tower more often than not. Rune control is essential, buy a set of wards if nobody is doing it. If I'm dominating my lane, I'll buy the bottle and wait for another 200 to bring wards as well. Use Forked Lightning to push a lane before the 2 minute interval rune spawn point. Either he comes to fight you for it (sheep ---> grab rune) and his lane gets pushed, or he/she gives it up for free. Drums is extra here, once you get bottle, arcane, blink you're basically set. Make your efforts to alternate ganks between the other two lanes and the jungle if they have a jungler. Now the ball is in your court to dictate the pace of the game, while another player will now go middle to receive that farm+xp. (You go down a paygrade since you don't need it anymore). Now if you have a lot of excess gold you can build that BKB or Drums or Ghost Stick if they have super high physical dps (i.e. Ursa). Whichever the situation calls for.

As Kipsate said, you become far less useful as the game goes on, but until then you are one of the best gankers/pushers. TBH I would get Mek as Rhasta on mid, simply due to the fact that if you're taking up mid, the likelihood of someone else having the means to get one anyway is low (only if you have a jungler or hard laner who can make it, which isn't always--and even then you'll probably get it faster than them due to getting mid farm+early tower gold), and it makes you push like a monster. Arcanes->Mek->BKB/Blink in whichever order is most suitable for the game->Sheep

it's better on heroes like qop or storm or nyx who can instantly burst down anyone they find

When people don't want to leave lane just roam with dagon and kill guys 24/7 and when pushing/many team fights mek? When you're trolling and someone else is getting the mek. Or when you definitely need the burst.

alternately between the whole team if there were no assists assist lasts for 15? seconds (i pulled that number out of nowhere but i think it's about right) in pubs start with a set of wards and the courier, it shouldn't be a big deal especially after 6.75 kicks in block with observer wards, they give vision of people looping behind the tower and block the pull edit: enerally you want to block the pullable medium camp dire top can still pull the hard camp when you have the medium warded, so watch out for that
