Wand is always an excellent item. Benefits low manapool heroes immensely. Get it if you're facing spell spammers such as venomancer or zeus etc...

Wand is not always neccesarily but atleast a stick, Wand has the advantage of requiring gg branches, which are the most costeffective item in the game(and thus most slot inefficient) so you can merge them and come out with a pretty damn cost efficient item

also its great for baiting.

I am thinking of starting to play a dota type game but not sure what options are available to me? Out of lol, hon and dota which would you recommend? I would imagine that the dota 2 beta is invite only but cant be sure

You have posted in the dota2 thread so I guess most replies here will say dota2. :D

Dota2 beta is invite only but it's easy to get a key from a third party if you pay about £3.50 (costs like £30 in official store). I would never recommend HoN to anyone, so you're left with LoL and Dota.

LoL=much easier learning curve, simplier game, rpg lvling up that means u have to grind but it's much easier and you generally play with other noobs.

Dota2=more complex game, harder to get into, but much more rewarding. Playing dota1 now is a bit meh imo, especially if you can't be bothered with 3rd party programs/an older game to actually play any good dota1 games.


There's like a million lol vs dota2 debates so I'm sure you can search for them and weigh up the pros and cons for each.

Yeah I did notice but I couldnt think of an appropriate thread to post the question ^^ Well I only wanted to play as a distraction and not really super serious so I will probably download lol and try it out.

Seem like less hassle and ofc its free compared to dota 2 which does look better imo but if what you say is true will take too much time to get good.

I played LoL for 4/5months and you just get bored really rapidly. There is almost no 'WOW' moments, its less demanding and every hero is designed for a specific role. Dota is really funnier all in all

Dota 2 will also be free upon release. You can also get cosmetic items from drops alone, and not have to pay for them like in LoL

What does mid skill matchmaking mean? Is it like the whole normal, high, highest rating? I'm curious, because theres a thread with 0 replies about a guy whos mid skill.

My guess is that he considers himself "high" MMR. Most people go by low, medium and high when ranking things. Only valve decides to start with normal and add superlatives..

I really don't think LoL develops dota skills at all. Only play it if you intend to stick to it, IMO. If you are preparing for Dota 2, get in beta, since it's streamlined you aren't learning redundant things, seriously making wand is extremely challenging..

So I haven't played in a few weeks and I looked at the new heroes and....well, KotL and Nyx are cool but Visage is leaving me in a bit of a confused state. I don't get what the fuck he's supposed to do or what purpose he has. He has a pretty good slow, what appears to be an extremely mediocre single target damage spell, and a really fucking good shield that makes him extraordinarily bulky. What I was sort of getting a vibe was he was sort of some psuedo-Brewmaster for teamfights, in the sense that you abuse your Gravekeepers Cloak to just not die while you chain off stuns with your Familiars.

I just don't see how he has any true utility though, because everything I'm thinking he can do, it appears someone else can just do better.

yea u just win teamfights and trilanes with him
his nuke is really good in early fights the cd is crazy short
hes better than panda at not getting banned

Yep, for me it's more often medallion though. By far my favourite item (wand would win but I'm really bored of it).

ie furion with:
medallion
phase
necronomicon
hex
orchids

sometimes wand. 6 insanely good actives that all work well together (except wand, but it's a pretty good iteM).

beastmaster with:
medallion
urn
wand
and soul ring or bottle depending on lane.

sometimes phase/necronomicon.. (I don't really build urn or even medallion anymore because I'm always long lane BM, but if you are mid it's very very good and this is the hero I spent the most time with early in beta)

I'm pretty confident with 6 items now so I don't go out of my way to do it, I just find that there are literally no competing with well used active items (pipe/mek are essential, medallion is fucking amazing if your team focuses at all, hex is.. well hex. orchids can be essential against a panda or blink hero. necrobook..) and it takes some practice to use all 6, hell it takes practice to remember you have them.

How do you check your MMR? How do you even know if you have one? Is there a ranked and a normal setting like in LoL?

I'm asking because idk and I can't find it anywhere in the dota2 client.

been said before, the only real way to check your skill range is to type in your name in recent games and see which category (normal high or very high) you have the most games in.
