You should really learn to play all the heroes, but it's fine to focus on a particular hero. Using your hero well also depends on your game sense, and that comes from knowing what other heroes are capable of.

I mean yeah you could read up on all the heroes and their skills, but you won't visually appreciate things such as spell ranges.

Learn to play all the heroes is a very eager as a goal. Learning what each hero does is the actual goal I guess. I will try and get a game with every hero in sooner or later, just to always have a rough estimate on ability ranges, damage and cooldowns. All I am really interested in right now though is Invoker.

Some people have suggested it before, if you are really set on playing Invoker(one of the hardest heroes to play mechanically in the game) you should invoketrain for a while, create a custom game for yourself, cheats on, enter

-gold 999999
-lvlup 25
buy an Aghanims scepter(and boots, because if not you look slow as fuck)
buy a lot of mana regen items(maybe bloodstone, lotsa void stones or orchids)

or

-lvlup 25
and put on wtf mode.

and just spam spells for a while, if you do this you will gain muscle memory over time so you can quickly invoker while doing the real deal.

Conversely if you're just starting out in learning Invoker, before even playing I recommend: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/75495922/InvokerTrainer.htm

The actual invoker trainer! I got to under 15 seconds in the Classic game before I attempted to start playing Invoker..... needless to say I ran a trainfest after I got the basics down. One of the most enjoyable heroes to play.

Hi Fw

Thanks, thats neat. I played him in some bot games instead for a couple of games until I could pull out every spell I wanted. Getting faster at it never hurts though.

I'm just getting started, played first game yesterday and I've read through the newbie guides today but is there anything I should change from default options, valve/icefrog probably defaulted them so that everything makes sense but as I don't know better I'm just making sure.

Referring to things like should auto-attack be on/off and possibly hotkeys as well, items on numpad seemed a bit weird to me for one.

Would recommend alt+q/w/e/a/s/d for items as that puts them near your spell hotkeys.

i like zxcvb[space] for items
alt is cool too but i used to ping randomly whenever i had it on so i no longer use it
autoattack on/off doesn't really matter, whatever you're used to is fine

He's an int hero that benefits from tank builds, and has good damage potential, both physical and magic. He is also micro intensive with his familiars.

Adding to this--

Strong trilane presence with soul assumption. Strong map control presence with familiars--during midgame familiars + one stunner can pick off enemy supports easily. Lack of AoE, so not that great of a pusher (familiars can only attack a few times before needing recharge) and an even worse anti-pusher.

4 second cooldown nuke that can do 200 damage at level 1. In trilanes vs trilanes, heroes easily take damages in exchanges which quickly bumps up the soul counter to do full damage.

His passive also bumps up his resistance physical and magic resistance to withstand bursts of harassment, even at level 1 it's 4 armor+12% magic resistance.

Visage was the king of trilanes and always picked by one team in the chinese shadowfiend/storm/lion era, before they nerfed him by increasing soul assumption's mana cost. If you can win a trilane vs trilane, you're dominating 3 of their players.

It will be very interesting to see if teams start using visage to destroy trilanes used to protect carries (like morphling). Making trilanes more dangerous also weakens jungling play.

gods, I hope so

for some reason I always played him solo mid/safelane, I'd love to see how it's done properly.

Personally, playing him solo mid I feel isn't that bad. Soul assumption mana cost is so high at early levels that I feel he can really benefit from levels to get items/reduce the mana cost so he can spam it more often in fights. Also, a fast level 6 can allow him to send his bats around to help his teammates.

iG has picked Visage a couple times for Chuan a couple times in the past 6 months in DotA 1. Finding the specific games won't be that easy, but if you're interested in seeing how Visage is played, that's probably the most recent place to look for how he's used in pro games.

http://dota.replays.net/HeroReplays.aspx?hero=UC60 Pretty much all relevant Visage replays in recent Dota history. Which translates to almost none. ^^

When I should be getting a magic wand? Is it mostly hero dependent?
