Secret have shown themselves to be a top team in contention for any tournament they enter. Where is this weird expectation coming from that that's somehow a bad thing or that they should clearly be doing better? With the arguable exception of Alliance, utterly dominant teams always get figured out over the course of a tournament and teams get closer to their level. That's not evidence of some deep flaw in their play, it just shows that they're exceptionally strong and can come up with innovative stuff which, shock, people figure out after 20 games, at which point they're left on a more even field.

Secret are fine and will still be challenging for the title at TI5.

I think the general point of "concern" is that Secret have fallen to the same thing in several major tournaments now. They bring in something that's fairly innovative and stirs up the meta, dominate in the non-elimination games, and then always fall short of an actual championship because they didn't prepare anything else.

Compared to teams like EG or VG who certainly can be figured out, but have enough versatility that their performance isn't heavily dependent on a few hero picks.

I don't know. Young/stupid people tend to have an outsized sense of nationalism. I love my country and everything but there's no question there are many places not in the US I would be happy living, and would happily move to if I had a good professional reason to do so.

Especially when he plans to retire after another couple of years, I don't get the big deal.

So guys how about we talk about Team Secret?

Really didn't feel like the recent TL article had a lot of substance. It felt like the "counters" to Team Secret's strategy were literally just general dota tips.

Another big weakness lies in the way that Secret relies on their players during certain periods of the game. Earlygame Secret relies heavily on its supports to secure exp and farm on heroes that might struggle in lane versus the enemy team, while in the midgame the team relies on Zai to pave the way for s4 and RTZ to get farm.


I mean these are more or less the default roles, but they're construed here as some kind of weaknesses. Supports secure exp and farm on heroes that might struggle in lane and the offlaner has a big role in the midgame.

There are other examples. It just felt like the first section about their playstyle was a lot more insightful than the second, which focuses on their counters. Really liked the note about how defensively they play in the early game, and their preference for tri-core. What is tri-core, anyway? When does a strong initiator/utility non-carry NOT qualify as a core?

It's a good question. I see people counter discussions of a lineup being 4p1 by saying it's actually dual-core, even if the core's entire job is to make space for the carry. Like you ever have less than two farming heroes on a team.

Not sure if it's a case of people abusing terminology or a lack of comprehension.of what they mean.
