Robert Mays of Grantland had an awesome note when he said that running $22 million worth of running backs behind $1 million worth of guards isn't a smart idea.

Putting fantasy football aside, signing a marquee RB is a terrible idea in this offensive environment. It's pass happy and pass plays are something like 58% of plays with only a handful of teams able to get close to 50% for running plays. This thing about RBs being dispensable is common knowledge now.
Then you have to account for the influence of RB's old O-Line on past success, where you see cowboys O-Line moving defenses by a yard or so last year.
Then you have to account for what happened to the Eagle O-Line this year. In the ground game, you have to have good guards. They're blocking. They're pulling. They're often going send level and erasing the linebackers. And Eagles let Mathis go and have a sieve. What a move.
For fantasy football though, RB running stats give good production, so just based on the FF skew, there's more of a reason to pick up RB. But this is a really bad situation where maybe Chip Kelly can fix the line again and Demarco can get some production.

Both of these teams... are just horrible. It just feels like there is so little talent on the field. It's been a while since I felt this way watching a game.

I know this is relatively minor, but can anyone with more knowledge explain having Chris Thompson in on this drive instead of Morris? It's a crucial drive to stay in the game and Thompson's awareness seems kind of terrible. Even if Morris is a worse runner and receiver than Jones, he's good enough at both and he's by far the smartest of the three, and the only one that's an excellent blocker.
For the life of me, I can't understand why Thompson was in on that drive.

Literally lol'd at this. Thanks. Who do you rank above cam? The guy who lost to Tim Tebow in the playoffs? The guy who keeps getting broken in Dallas? The guy in Seattle who has one of the best receivers in the league but is to afraid to throw the ball to him? The guy in New Orleans who couldn't win a game on the road if his life depended on it? The guy in Indy who set the record number of interceptions in his first 3 years of playing? The old man in Denver that looks like he's ready to go into cardiac arrest at any minute?
Cam is legit #3 QB in the league right now. If newton was the QB on any other of those teams I mentioned, they would be going to the Super Bowl. Unfortunately, Cam has scarecrows for teammates.

Cam is a fairly unique top 10 QB. Calling him top 3 is a huge stretch. His running compensates for his poor passing. Sure it helps him keep defenses honest that way, but many of the other QBs do that too, through better reads and more accurate passing.
Say you put Cam on the Falcons. Do you really think Cam would be able to get more out of Julio and Roddy than Matt Ryan does? I'd say Ryan's O-line is even worse than Cam's has been, and Cam would never be able to get Julio in stride or in the pocket. He'd be constantly left high and dry, for some safety to spear.
I feel like you're overly attached because 1) you're from NC or 2) you had him in fantasy his rookie year.

The way this year is shaping out, Cam Newton is 3rd best QB in the NFC South.
Matt Ryan #1 Drew Brees #2
You can actually go around the league and name lots of better QBs.

On no goddamn planet is Cam anywhere near the top 3. I think personally, he's majorly hampered by having such a shit team, but even if he had all Jerry Rice clones that guy overthrows the ball literally more than anyone else in the league.

Some guys are great at doing more with less, but when you finally give them more they do less with it.
Cam is one of those guys. You can't just say, "Cam's team is shit and he gets them to the playoffs, therefore putting him on a good team will automatically get them to the championship game." Cam doesn't have all the passing tools to get the most out of his WRs, so giving him a bunch of OBJs instead of Ginn's will help a bit, but not by as much as you think.

if we are going by this year i would say he could be a top 5 finish.
Im expecting something like
1. rodgers 2. brady 3. big ben 4. Luck 5. Cam
Carolina's schedule is incredibly soft if you havent looked yet. Top 3 literally impossible though unless big ben commits asssault again and colts continue to suck all year

Top 3 literally impossible though unless big ben commits asssault again and colts continue to suck all year Nice you managed to overrate the 4th and 5th guy on your list. Rivers is better, Romo is better when healthy, Wilson is basically Cam but successful. Brees and Matty Ice are still better in his own division. And I've already stated my opinion on luck.
|
Cam's faults seem to be in his actual throwing ability. I think he usually makes ok decisions, even if he tries to superman it too much. Kap has nearly identical issues with his accuracy, but he also makes fucking awful decisions on a regular basis.
Neither belong anywhere near the top 5 though. There is zero reason for either to be over the likes of Romo, petyon, rivers, and at least several other qbs. Those guys have have been historically much better, and still currently are better. If we are asking who right now is better I'd take Peyton's noodle arm every time

I get a laugh out of that skinny legs Peyton Manning Directv commercial. I keep thinking they should have made a skinny arms Peyton Manning instead.
