2026 GSL Code S Season 1

RO12 Group A Preview: Rogue, Percival, Solar, Zoun

Start time: Wednesday, Apr 29 9:30am GMT (GMT+00:00)

by Wax

StarCraft II fans around the world received a pleasant spring surprise, with news that GSL Code S would be continuing for its 16th consecutive year. While the tournament has been downsized once again—with the majority of the tournament now played online—the continuation of the storied GSL legacy was welcome news indeed.

The tournament retains its 12-player format from 2025, with two GSL-style group stages leading into a 4-player playoffs. Code S Season kicks off with Group A of the RO12, with Rogue, Percival, Zoun, and Solar looking to move on into the second group stage.

2026 Global StarCraft II League - Season 1

Group A is full of intrigue, with none of the four players standing out as a strong favorite. Rogue definitely has the most name recognition, but since his return from military service in 2024, his level of play has been wildly inconsistent. High marks included his runner-up finish in Code S Season 2 of 2025, and more recently, another second place finish in RSL Revival Season 4. However, he has also been knocked out frequently in the lower rounds of competitions, be it mid-size online events or last year's EWC.

The best versions of Rogue we've seen in his second act resemble his world champion peak, combining overwhelming macro play and cunning mind games unmatched by anyone else in the game. However, there's a marked inconsistency to his standard play that has held him back—especially when playing against top Protosses (well, that's a struggle for any Zerg these days). For example, actually beating MaxPax in the late-game during the group stages of RSL felt like it could be a turning point, but he ended up getting beat down 0-4 when they rematched in the grand finals. The best version of Rogue should get out of this group, but who knows whether that version of Rogue will even show up?

At least Rogue gets a soft initial opponent on paper in Percival, who was once a fringe Code S player who could only be given the "progamer" designation dubiously (albeit, it's been a very vague title for years now). However, he's now become the best StarCraft II story of 2026, rocketing up the Aligulac.com standings in the span of just a few months. While he's still only at 17th place at the moment, it's likely that doesn't reflect his true level as he's been putting up a competitive record against past Code S regulars. Some highlights from Percival's 2026 include several deep runs in weekly cups, victories against ByuN and Solar to qualify for GSL, and even a shocking upset against Serral to help his team win the WardiTV Teamleague (powered by a 3-base Marine-Tank all-in).

While there is an understandable, slight skew toward all-in strategies in Percival's play, he's also been quite impressive when playing standard as well. Typically, the best approach for GSL underdogs is to try and catch the favorites off-guard with a well-prepared cheese, but Percival could be justified in trying to take on his groupmates in straight-up duels. Moreover, the move to an online group stage format could help Percival as well, getting rid of the nervousness factor of playing on stage against vastly more experienced opponents.

It's hard to know where a fast-rising player will top out—post-military herO soared all the way to the summit, but we've also seen players like fellow groupmate Zoun stall-out just below the 'true' contender level. Wherever Percival ends up, it will be fascinating to continue following his StarCraft II journey through the rest of the year.

A few months ago, #1 Korean Zerg Solar would have been the lock-him-in favorite to advance from the group, but 2026 has not treated him kindly. The second half of 2025 saw him become the sole Zerg capable of challenging the mighty herO-MaxPax-Clem trinity in the weekly cups (a bellwether of good performances in larger events), but both his participation and results in such events have declined as of late.

It's hard to know what's going on with top-level players, now that the interval between major events has grown longer. It could very well be that Solar simply decided to take it easy for a while after the conclusion of the All-Star Invitational in January. His showings in the weekly cups right before GSL weren't inspiring, but he deserves some benefit of the doubt. However, if we believe that Code S is an entirely different kind of competition (and if you're reading a TL.net preview, you certainly do), then we should have some faith that a former champion will up his game.

Zoun. For a while, Zoun was almost like a Protoss version of Rogue, capable of beating championship-caliber players on his best days and falling apart on the off days. However, 2026 has seen him suffer a sustained slump, struggling to produce notable results in a variety of online events. The worst indictment of Zoun's current level is his path through the GSL qualifiers, where he barely made the final cut and took down some of the weakest participants in GuMiho, Ryung, and sOs.

Again, if we're to believe this diminished version of Code S still has a fundamentally different quality than every other tournament—whether it's due to the preparation time given for matches or the importance players place upon it—you can't write Zoun off. Perhaps the official return of the GSL gave him the vital dose of motivation to become one of the scene's most dangerous wild cards again. It may be grasping at straws, but his latest result does happen to be a 5-0 over ByuN in an iNu's Battles showmatch—here's to hoping that we see a locked-in Zoun compete.

Predictions

Percival 2 - 1 Rogue
Solar 2 - 1 Zoun
Solar 2 - 0 Percival
Rogue 2 - 1 Zoun
Rogue 2 - 0 Percival

Solar and Rogue to advance

I think this will be Percival's breakthrough tournament. On skill alone, he should be able to best Zoun and Rogue, let's see if their experience or some well crafted strategies get the best of him - in my opinion though, this is his group to lose.

Sorry about an incorrect match order version that went up earlier; maybe a technical error for TL or just a dumb human copy-paste error on my end

I was very surprised to see Percival qualify, he was mostly cheesing more well known players in small cups and now he made it to the GSL (2026 version but still impressive). Still put my liquibet into Solar and Rogue, but I could see Zoun qualify as well

Surprised this isn't on YouTube yet unless I'm just missing it? Are they delaying that to encourage people to watch SOOP vods? ASL still gets uploaded to their YouTube channel.

ASL does get uploaded to YT, but with a delay. The VoDs are instantly online on Tastosis' respective SOOP-channels, so I assume they do the same with GSL here.

I delved in when (then Afreeca) offered some interesting extra value, like the afgsl3/4 streams being first-person feeds of GSL competitors way back when.

Otherwise why would I? Even if we’re talking about supporting the entity running the show, I’m going out on a limb but I’m going to guess ad revenue off YouTube, be it streaming or VoDs is more valuable per eye from Westerners than getting us on a Korean-centric platform.

Regardless of one’s opinion on the relative strengths of the two iterations, SC2’s scene did a far better job in bridging the gap between foreign players and audiences and Korean ones

It’s a different scene, leverage what you actually have.

Even Kespa didn’t really, they just tried to replicate what they did in BW in a game with a very different ecosystem.

See too SOOP. Neither are remotely egregious or anything, I’ll live
