Please keep the QQ to a minimum if you do not like this update. We are happy to hear your reasoning for not liking a ranked system, but no "OMG VOLVO WHY" posts.

Responding to posts that end in Kappa will only end in tears for you.

The sarcarsm doesn't make sense because he is making fun of a situation that doesn't exist. It doesn't mean he missed the Twitch emote.

Illogical trolling that provoke responses are still successful.

While your opinion is very valuable I'm sure to us all, it is clear that for a long time a decent sized group of people have wanted Ranked matchmaking, enough so that Valve is listening and creating this ENTIRELY OPTIONAL thing that you are absolutely not obligated to participate in. I for one feel this is very necessary. After playing 500 games of Dota 2 sometimes it's nice to play in a more competitive setting and to find out your actual skill level compared to the rest.

Funny thing about it is that people will call it a competitive setting and then proceed to queue nothing but AP still. Yeah, counterpick chicken and racing to pick FOTM pubstompers is clearly competitive.

Let's stop using the word competitive because that isn't what it is at all. Honestly it's barely reaching 'serious' because the top 1% of players will still be able to build whatever they want on whoever they want. Instead lets describe it as what it is. Ranked. The only difference is now there is a number. People will still be the same and honestly I highly doubt that the majority of people were playing to lose. It'll pretty much be the exact same game, but now with a number to show how much you're not progressing.

If anything, this just gives trolls a whole new way to make people rage.
Wait.
What if I play on the Russian server for all my ranked matches and only get six bottles?

The worst case scenario is this:
Normal: "lol I only do stupid shit in my normal games cause they don't matter"
Ranked: "someone else is partially responsible for my penis size" - we all know how that ends

imho the only competitive/"serious" possible mode is 5n5 with prebuilt teams (aka tmm / scrims), everything else is just... a couple of random strangers thrown together.

Finally something that I can definitively point to and be like "i'm fucking pro, my teammates noob, fail matchmaking" before I feed 0-10 in my games.

This is pretty much the entire point that I'm making. People are acting like this is the new age of match making and everything is going to change when in reality nothing at all is going to except you're going to see how slow you really are to progress. I'm curious to see the little things that change though, and I do have to say that the way Valve is handling it is probably the best way they could have.

I don't understand: how is this more competitive? What is the difference other than being able to see your mmr? People who want to see their mmr can already use a third party, i think.

I have no problem with them implementing this, but I don't see why they would market it as more competitive when all they are doing is having a visible mmr.

It's a good patch in my opinion. Regardless of how "meaningful" it is, visible MMR is, it's something a large part of the community has been asking for. If they want it, why not give them the option to see it? I, for one, would love to see if if for no other reason than out of curiosity. And for the competitive person, it's a better gauge of overall "pub skill" than just knowing if you're in normal, high, or v. high.
You mean I just write stuff here and other people can see it?

Chinese ranked ladders for DotA 1 have used -AP forever. There's absolutely nothing wrong with it.

Not like any of the drafting modes make sense queueing with 4 randoms.

One thing that I think will change will be the average hero compositions. One poster remarked out it will be very FOTM and I think this is correct.

Whether or not the MMR actually "matters" won't change that people will still probably play more seriously in these games. That will lead to more optimized picks and more and more games that reflect actual competitive Dota, the same way ixdl is relatively similar.

We will probably see a lot less variety in Ranked, which is a bit unfortunate imo, but what're'ya'gonna'do

Now what we need is an actual team ladder where winners get invites to a TI4 qual.

That... actually sounds pretty awful. How about a team ladder that is just more than average MMRs first?

Can you explain what sounds awful about this? How does turning TI into something more than an invite-only event make it worse?

They do this with lol currently for a qualifyer into the lcs (which is a qualifyer for worlds) Its been a great thing that has given new teams the exposure they need to grap a sponsor and get a chance to go pro. Riot does hand them a salery for the weeks they play but they almost always get bought by a team if they get to the next level.
