While your opinion is very valuable I'm sure to us all, it is clear that for a long time a decent sized group of people have wanted Ranked matchmaking, enough so that Valve is listening and creating this ENTIRELY OPTIONAL thing that you are absolutely not obligated to participate in. I for one feel this is very necessary. After playing 500 games of Dota 2 sometimes it's nice to play in a more competitive setting and to find out your actual skill level compared to the rest.

Let's stop using the word competitive because that isn't what it is at all. Honestly it's barely reaching 'serious' because the top 1% of players will still be able to build whatever they want on whoever they want. Instead lets describe it as what it is. Ranked. The only difference is now there is a number. People will still be the same and honestly I highly doubt that the majority of people were playing to lose. It'll pretty much be the exact same game, but now with a number to show how much you're not progressing.

Wait. What if I play on the Russian server for all my ranked matches and only get six bottles?

The worst case scenario is this: Normal: "lol I only do stupid shit in my normal games cause they don't matter" Ranked: "someone else is partially responsible for my penis size" - we all know how that ends imho the only competitive/"serious" possible mode is 5n5 with prebuilt teams (aka tmm / scrims), everything else is just... a couple of random strangers thrown together.

This is pretty much the entire point that I'm making. People are acting like this is the new age of match making and everything is going to change when in reality nothing at all is going to except you're going to see how slow you really are to progress. I'm curious to see the little things that change though, and I do have to say that the way Valve is handling it is probably the best way they could have.

I have no problem with them implementing this, but I don't see why they would market it as more competitive when all they are doing is having a visible mmr.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with it. Not like any of the drafting modes make sense queueing with 4 randoms.

People who want to see their mmr can already use a third party, i think. One thing that I think will change will be the average hero compositions. One poster remarked out it will be very FOTM and I think this is correct. Whether or not the MMR actually "matters" won't change that people will still probably play more seriously in these games. That will lead to more optimized picks and more and more games that reflect actual competitive Dota, the same way ixdl is relatively similar. We will probably see a lot less variety in Ranked, which is a bit unfortunate imo, but what're'ya'gonna'do

They do this with lol currently for a qualifyer into the lcs (which is a qualifyer for worlds) Its been a great thing that has given new teams the exposure they need to grap a sponsor and get a chance to go pro. Riot does hand them a salery for the weeks they play but they almost always get bought by a team if they get to the next level.
