Please keep the QQ to a minimum if you do not like this update. We are happy to hear your reasoning for not liking a ranked system, but no "OMG VOLVO WHY" posts. |

That is so much better than a just flat win/loss ratio. I bet there is some complex math behind that system. The math is in the blog, they calculate the integral of the gold curve after the last point it reaches zero. It's pretty simple, unless they do something else they are not talking about. The only question is how much area represents a good/bad game. I am pretty sure it is fucking space math and there are a ton of factors. Valve isn't one for half steps and they love to push what is possible. I wouldn't be surprised if it kept track of pings and how effectively they were used and if people used voice chat. They do says that's one of several metrics, but it just shows the simplicity of it. There's no reason to make it rocket science, the big question is what to track, not how to do it. I am not referring just to the gold leads and when they shift, but the whole process. The weight of the metrics and how it works and what is effective. Its easy to look at the match making equation an say "see this is how it works." Creating and making it work is the real challenge.

Hmm it still sounds like they don't know how to make fair MMRs yet. Reading this, I don't find anything new on what they were already trying to accomplish from the beginning. So all this changes is visible MMR and a seperate queue?

Very very stoked for this. People can bitch and moan all they want about how a visible rating breeds toxic communities, but this a crucial step towards developing Dota as a competitive game, opposed to a casual game with a tiny minority of competitive players.
Some people underestimate the draw of true competition, and goals to work towards. It develops better players, and develops dota as a game. Yes, it does include a certain amount of toxicity and douchebaggery, but as far as I'm concerned that's simply part of what competitive online gaming (call it esports if you want) is. People need something to strive towards, and personal progression is what keeps people interested.
Great work volvo.

RIP Ixdl
That is a very detailed Blog post..I like it

Finally thank u proving dota isnt competitive my ass. What about the statement about individual performance...doesnt that hurt supports..

Waiting for excalibur to post how this thing works.

This is really cool. It would be interesting if they could add in difference in kills to the MMR or difference in experience too.

I think that slowly we will see ranked ladders and in-built tourneys, a bit like the old battle.net and it feels like valve and icefrog see a place for that in the long term. They add features constantly based upon the community feedback, they slowly took away all ways of finding your skill level in normal MM but are giving us this in return because they more they removed ratings, the more outcry there was to have some system that you opt in to in which you can get ranked and see ur MMR and we get it.
If we push for ranked ladders, custom ladders, tourneys etc to be built in to the client then i think they will do it.

well.. there goes my chance to quit this game (and gaming in general; as im done with SC2) - MM was the biggest issue with dota.
Guess im a dota fan for life now.

omg vlave is so stupid, do they not realize that visible MMR will just lead to endless flaming between teammates? They should have just kept matchmaking as it was. If it ain't broke, don't fix it! Kappa

And on the seventh day Gaben finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done.

I know that feel, bro. Literally. I stopped playing because of the matchmaking, and the more I researched about it, the less I wanted to play. Given the transparency and the rated ladder with an open rating will give me more insight and who knows, even tell me where I've been faulty. The worst thing for me was the supposed 50% forced thing.

It doesn't mean he missed the Twitch emote.

I feel this is quite unnecessary, things work well as they are IMO.
