*edit* when thornton gets skated away by a ref after he tries to kill orpik he looks like he wants to tear a baby to pieces, what a fucking psychopath
As dumb as Neal can be, no way is he in that same category.

no wonder canadian parents are steering their kids away from hockey the way they used to steer them away from football.

is it me or has the last couple of years (maybe since 2010) the games in the NHL have gotten a LOT chippier.
not a week goes by without someone headshotting someone and something like this seems like it happens monthly.

head injuries and "chippy play" have been steadily increasing for 35 years.

It's just funny that despite Rinaldo's stunt, he's prob not gonna be the headline. And who woulda thunk that after him getting ejected with 4 seconds of icetime?
|
That shit made no sense. What the hell was Rinaldo thinking? And he's mostly stayed away from that stuff all year, goddamn. PHI somehow killed off 7 minutes of PP, but then lost 5-1 because DAL's first line went crazy.
|
Pretty much how I feel.
Neal is a shitlord and should sit for a long time on that. THat was gross, and he has a history of head hunting (but never gets suspended because he's good!).
Thornton's thing was stupid too, but far less so

More Canadians should start watching lacrosse. Fuck hockey.
|
I say as I look to see what hockey games are on.

Lax is cool, but I hate MLL (not sure if they have a Canadian team) and box lacrosse is kinda cool, but I don't know, I don't care that much for the gigundo goalies. Fighting is A+ though.
College lax is where it's at.
|
Lacrosse is the official sport of Canada. No joke.
|
I always find that weird.
Just got done watching that whole B's/Penguins thing. I like Thornton, but he was an idiot there. Not just because what he did, but because that hit was clean. Fights over clean hits annoys the shit out of me

No suspension, no fine, no nothing because Ray Emery wasn't suspended for basically the same thing. The NHL will be rewriting the rule book after this year in regards to this kind of bs Difference here is that Orpik was carried off on a stretcher. I was unaware of that part. Bye bye Thorton for however randomly determined length of time shanahan choose minus a premium for playing in boston (lol wheel of justice) + Show Spoiler +After careful consideration, Shawn Thornton has been suspended for 6 games for his actions on Brooks Orpik. In reviewing this play, we also took into consideration that Shawn Thornton plays for the Boston Bruins, who are mostly un-suspendable. That kind of crap has no place in hockey. Orpik's hit on the Bruin guy was totally clean, shoulder into chest. I agree with his choice to not get his skull pounded in by Thorton. You shouldn't have to answer for clean hits. Not sure that he was answering for his own hit, to be honest. Pretty sure Thorton came to ring him up for Neal kneeing Marchand in the head. They should both be suspended, really. What Neal did was shitty, but I've never, ever, seen anything quite like what Thorton did there. EDIT: Video of Neal's knee immediately before Thorton's shit storm: https://vine.co/v/hQmUUnDgEnx
yeah well. the thing is.. bruins player have generated so much hatred amongst other players, teams, fans that nobody cares if they get hurt, because they feel they deserve a knee in the face. Bruins also have the reputation of going at the player who just landed a clean hit because their ego can't take it; chara, thornton, lucic.
the rules needs to change, in order to prevent the style of game bruins are playing.

still if he had fought Thornton right after the huge hit, im 90% sure Neal wouldnt have hit Marchand with that knee and that Thornton wouldnt have felt the need to ground and pound him into oblivion...
thats why I think hockey has a plance in the sport and that the instigator rule is bad. If you want to hand out huge hits like that, you gotta be ready to answer to a guy like Thornton. Otherwise you see cheapshots like Neal's or Thornton's later on in the game.
all that bushleague stuff was created by Orpik refusing to drop the mits after delivering one sick hit.

I think that Hockey as a game needs fighting, personally.
It is an intense physical game. Without the ability to just fight someone in the game you have kind of a boiling over of emotions. It isn't a big deal in football because you can blow up a guy every play, but in Hockey you have to be on the ice at the same time as the guy, and you also need to find a spot where you both in the play at the same time to "take it out on the field." And the thing is, you needs it to be clean.
Back in the day before the instigator rule none of this happened because you would just fight after anything over the line happened and that was that.
This way it can kind of stay supressed and just explode unhealthily. I'm not justifying anyone actions, they all were shitty. But if they had a more healthy outcome, none of them happen in my opinion.
Fighting is dangerous sure, but the players know the risks of the game. Just like a welder knows that as a welder he is digesting harmful welding fumes... but no welder has ever sued a company because he got cancer from these welding fumes.

That's right in the shoulder. The concussion is from his head pinging off the ice.

I dont have any problems with the hit. the hit is fine.
when you deliver that kind of hit though, you dont shy away from the guy who comes to defend his teammate. Hitting people like that isnt free.
that was basically Maxim Lapierresque.

No, fighting is fucking retarded and this whole idea that you need to fight for making a clean play is just as retarded. If your guy gets hit, play the game and either A) win, which the Bruins did or B) try to lay a licking *cleanly* on someone, not drop the gloves and mug a guy. And if you want do away with cheapshots, the league should actually grow some balls and deal out harsh suspensions/fines. Not this slap on the wrist stuff. Seriously, the garbage Thornton pulled is so close to what Bertuzzi did that if he doesn't get an equal punishment, I just don't know.
