it's funny, because that's exactly what the paid shills of big business say when they want to get rid of rules that are in their way

but yeah we live in a horrible bureaucratic culture, everything is bureaucratic, the government is bureaucratic, the coporations who actually rule us are bureaucratic... this whole "public vs private" bullshit is just a way to distract you from the fact that it's all just one big technocracy

Evolution still deeply unpopular among Americans. Dismissed by 4 in 10 as elitist malarkey. Politicians shift towards promoting Intelligent Design in public schools.
The unrealistic sound of these propositions is indicative, not of their utopian character, but of the strength of the forces which prevent their realization.

If they (or you) are going to draw broad "God Created" conclusions, they really should include old earth creationism as well. There's plenty that believe in a billion-year-old earth created by God without the evolution of species.

Anyone with even a cursory knowledge of statistics will be able to read "the margin of sampling error is ±4 percentage points at the 95% confidence level" together with the earlier "a random sample of 1,020 adults" and draw a far different conclusion. I really thought sampling and confidence intervals were better known by the long term posters. Ridiculous conclusion.

Fascinating to think that the world's science powerhouse, that has brought us iPhones, space shuttles and sent men on the moon has only 15% of its population really believing in science, and 45% of its population holding on absolutely medieval beliefs.

I wouldn't like being a 35th century's archeologist trying to understand that country in the XXth and XXIst century. It's going to be a giant mindfuck for future observers.

Hey guys, I don't know if these stats have been posted already but here, have a little something about the growing income disparity in the US and the share of the total income going to the richest. It's interesting how it's almost identical to early XX century, it must mean that just like during that golden era there is alot of money to be made by hard-working people.

Here this is the % of the total shared income in the US going in the pockets of the 10 % richest
+ Show Spoiler +
[image loading]

The 1% richest contribute so much to the country so it's only normal for them to receive almost 25% of the overall income
+ Show Spoiler +
[image loading]

The top 1% creates growth so it's normal that if there is a growth in income they get more than 50% of it
+ Show Spoiler +
[image loading]

I know it's a bit depressing to know that the US society is coming back to its roots. But here look... It's the smile of the anglo-saxon neo-libertarians around the world!!! (again share of the total income going to the 1% in english speaking countries)

In Europe it's so hard to be rich and to be highly paid for good work, look at this pit!

I know these stats are completely outdated and meaningless. I also know that the American dream is as alive and well as in 1910. Ah hmm and yes like linked few pages ago, it's better to have high social mobility and to cuddle the ones who can already live an indecent life than to try to bring more egality, but hey it's not like the social mobility in the US is one of the worst in the world (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_mobility#Country_comparison).
Anyway thx to my economy and sociology teacher, I hope some people will have less desilusions with this.

Embarrassing.
A sound mind in a sound body, is a short, but full description of a happy state in this World: he that has these two, has little more to wish for; and he that wants either of them, will be little the better for anything else.

I'm always annoyed at the phrasing of the top answer because it's completely ambiguous.

Believing that God "guided" evolution could mean that you're a pseudo-scientist who makes up "impossible" steps in the evolutionary chain and then attempts to fill those steps with God's magic. But it could also mean that you think God is a watchmaker who set up the initial conditions and laws of nature in such a way to ensure that life would happen by a process of natural selection because that's what he wanted to occur.

There's no point getting upset about many Americans believing the latter because theists pretty much have to believe at least that much and we already know that America consists mostly of theists. But the phrasing gives us no way to tell how anti-science the group that selects this choice actually is.

The young earth creationism stat is depressing enough either way.

Ad Americans are too cool for evolution :

But to be fair here - at least to some degree - I believe in evolution yet still see some potential for involvement of a higher power. Science can't explain everything. More however than religious zealotry.

I like to think of myself as a pretty scientific guy-- I'm majoring in bio, etc., but I'd probably pick Option 1 there. Frustrating I get lumped into the same category as some of those people with... less-than-rigorous explanations for God and evolution.

That you feel shame in publicly voicing support for option 1 speaks more on the state of religious discourse in this country than on yourself. I think it can change for the better

yeah the humans evolved but with god guiding isn't actually in conflict with science, as it could be that god just orchestrated the big bang and created the rules for how life can be created and evolve etc
I don't think that's fully what all the people stating that believe, but it's fair enough.

umm what's your point? saying half of americans don't like obamacare is indeed a ridiculous conclusion.

follow the evidence. don't lead it to where you want it to go because of "it's science! we've got these formulas that work, trust me!"

hm, id say that the first statement says that god guided the origin of the human species and not just created the boundary conditions. and this statement would indeed not be scientific

it doesn't specify anything about how god guided the process. I think it's hard for any religious person to go for option 2.

but it says that god specifically guided the development of human life, and not just created the world.
any deist could and would pick option 2, while theists would probably go for 1 (as frogrubdown already stated).
