Senior U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Antonin Scalia found dead at West Texas ranch
Associate Justice Antonin Scalia was found dead of apparent natural causes Saturday on a luxury resort in West Texas, federal officials said. Scalia, 79, was a guest at the Cibolo Creek Ranch, a resort in the Big Bend region south of Marfa. According to a report, Scalia arrived at the ranch on Friday and attended a private party with about 40 people. When he did not appear for breakfast, a person associated with the ranch went to his room and found a body. Chief U.S. District Judge Orlando Garcia, of the Western Judicial District of Texas, was notified about the death from the U.S. Marshals Service. U.S. District Judge Fred Biery said he was among those notified about Scalia's death. "I was told it was this morning," Biery said of Scalia's death. "It happened on a ranch out near Marfa. As far as the details, I think it's pretty vague right now as to how," he said. "My reaction is it's very unfortunate. It's unfortunate with any death, and politically in the presidential cycle we're in, my educated guess is nothing will happen before the next president is elected." The U.S. Marshal Service, the Presidio County sheriff and the FBI were involved in the investigation. Officials with the law enforcement agencies declined to comment. A federal official who asked not to be named said there was no evidence of foul play and it appeared that Scalia died of natural causes. A gray Cadillac hearse pulled into the ranch last Saturday afternoon. The hearse came from Alpine Memorial Funeral Home. Scalia was nominated to the U.S. Supreme Court in 1986 by President Ronald Reagan.
Sad to hear. I wonder if the Republicans will attempt to hold up any replacement until next year.

As fucked up as it sounds, it's about time he passed on for someone hopefully more progressive in social issues.

RIP, but good riddance.
Personally, I don't think there wasn't much of the brilliant legal mind that was first appointed. His rulings of late have been driven more by ideaology than any real legal argument.

It's a huge opportunity for Obama to reshape the court.

Have some dignity. no need to express gladness someone died, yeah he wasn't the greatest supreme judge (he was garbage) but no need to celebrate his death.

It's a difficult line to toe, but I think the country is better off that he's no longer on the bench. It's sad that it came from death instead of retirement.

No need to show pity for the pitiless. He used his position to push forth his ideology aggressively.

I am sad he is dead, but I am also relieved he will not be ruling on cases any more. I don't think the GOP is going to be able to hold of a nomination for 10 month and win any elections.

RIP
potential political implications are yuge.

Well, RIP.
This is going to change things. This will put a point on how important SCOTUS is and what's at stake this election.

I don't think there is going to be a legitimate shot at getting it done anyway. I don't think they would be able to approve of anyone Obama suggested with so much attention likely to come to it.

RIP Scalia, hopefully someone more progressive will follow.

hmm, two angles:
1. SCOTUS less important, Obama's appointee means we got a liberal majority 2. SCOTUS more important, we really have the chance to get the most liberal SCOTUS ever if a Democrat is elected
|
But the question is that the Republicans hold the Senate majority but will they approve of a moderate, sure as hell not a Liberal.

Definitely more important. It has to be a liberal that gets suggested and Republicans have to block them for hopes of winning the presidency.
Neither side can choose not to fight this fight.

Regardless of which way his replacement leans, so long as his argumentation has a base in reality it will be an improvement.

The GOP is so weak Obama could get a pretty liberal justice. This is terrible.
