I've been on a huge fantasy/sci-fi kick the last few years, so I think I'm going to hit up some classics this summer. Les Miserables (Victor Hugo), and Count of Monte Cristo (Alexander Dumas). Oh yeah, I'm going there.

I need to start some where and I have no idea where. Which books are the fundamentals of reading? The way I see atm is that although books like GOT are awesome and all the bottom line is that they are another means of entertainment, and I feel that books have more to offer than just entertainment, in other words I'm looking for other ways to open my mind(which kinda hard to find today) and to expand my knowledge and open new doors and perspectives of the world if that's by other people way of thinking etc. Thanks a lot! though I will never say no for a good fantasy book or "entertaining" books I missed up until now, to read them while I read other books, I love the whole alternative present stories(like Children of men etc.). Some recommendations: Jorge Luis Borges – Fictions Italo Calvino – Invisible Cities Mark Z. Danielewski – House of Leaves Alan Moore – Watchmen Cormac McCarthy – Blood Meridian

![]() Finally decided to get this off my reading list and am absolutely loving it. Already have the second book lined up and ready. I love the way OSC portrays his world. He never explains anything straight up or particularly describes anything in any detail. You pick up specifics about the world in little pieces from conversations and have to piece them together and use your imagination to figure out the big picture. It makes for really compelling reading because not only are you reading to find out what happens in the story, your also trying to piece together how things in this world operate and what the state of the world is. Its completely exhilarating.

![]() I just finished reading this book and it was a real treat. It was recommended to me by somebody who owned the book and I ended up borrowing it. At first I just borrowed it to be polite and thought I would read a few pages, look something up about it online and return it just to make the other person happy. But after the first 5 pages I was already hooked. It is written really well and very accessible. Funny, sad, adventurous and everything in between. It's about the writer who was a spent about 25 years in Africa studying baboons and is now professor of Biological Sciences, and Professor of Neurology and Neurological Sciences at Stanford University. But more then about the baboons (although we still get to know them well) it's about him and the people and culture he meets there. His adventures and experiences and how he sees Africa changing. This told by somebody with his background and ability to draw you into his world made it one of the books that had the most impact on me in resent years.

Really amazing, at least to me ![]() ![]() It is kind of tiresome to explain but it is an epic (as in long) mix of fantasy and western with some time/dimensional travel and horror thrown in as well. Some others: ![]() ![]()

for those who do not know - the book was the basis for the movie 'blade runner', i only saw that movie once, almost twenty years ago, and i ll definitely re-watch it after reading the book. as i remember the movie it ist pretty different from the book though the book focuses heavily on the issue of empathy and what it is that makes us human, and it wouldnt be pkd if there werent also strong religious undertones in it... heavily recommended! ive read a lot of pkd lately and apart from VALIS, this was the best novel yet, and its definitely the most well-written and paced work ive read by dick, its a fast read, not very long, and managed to both depress and make me think a lot towards the end some comments on what other ppl have posted: ive read starship troopers last year, while it starts out very cool it got on my nerves a lot towards the end, when heinlein just tries too desperately to shove his ideals and agenda down the reader's throat. still very amazing considering it was written in the fifties... and its nice to see that dawkin fanboys cant even spell the name of the book right, i cant comment on that particular book since i havent read it... about the gunslinger series: the first book is phenomenal, the initial trilogy is great, the fourth book is okay, and i was considering reading the new trilogy a couple of years ago. after realizing that i just outgrew stephen king when trying to read the second book again, i instead decided to just read the plot synopsis on wikipedia. i was really glad i didnt invest my time in reading the three new books, the plot synopsis sounded utterly retarded... fans of the series might be interested in the fact that there is a long-running series of graphic novels out, i havent read them but they look really promising, i like the gunslinger universe as a setting, it combines so many cool things... oh, and absolutely every person on the planet should read fight club. its the best book written in the last twenty years imho

![]() Amazing, amazing book by an indie self-published author. I've written an in-depth review here: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=334574 Not sure what I'm going to read next. I think I've been massively spoiled in the last couple months, going from American Gods to Wool Omnibus. I feel like the best fiction I'll read this year is already behind me - gotta think about it more and hunt down more gems!

+ Show Spoiler [The WWW Trilogy by Robert J. Sawyer] + Robert J. Sawyer is quickly becoming one of my favorite Sci-fi authors. This is a great look at an emergent AI that isn't intent on destroying humanity. Only disappointments I had in the trilogy were that some of the science was just plain wrong, and left undeveloped because of that, and that the third book went a little too political for my tastes. Great series though! Currently reading: + Show Spoiler [Embassytown by China Miéville] + It's time to read a science fiction novel by Miéville. I enjoyed his writing style in Kraken, so hopefully I can enjoy this one, as well. Next: + Show Spoiler [Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes] + Time to go read a classic.

![]() Every book I've read by Nabokov has been amazing, and this one was exceptionally good. I might read The Gift next. I hear it's his best Russian novel. Right now though I'm working my way through Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy. I read The Road and decided to check out more of his stuff, and I'm not dissapointed.
