I saw in stream any protoss player him using Archon and I was curious about one thing!
What's the real counter of Archon?
I did go see in blizzard site the page of protoss's units and there I saw that Archon is strong against just Muta and weak against Ultra / Immortal / Marauder. Here it's little normal, but I did other question: If Archon is strong just muta, why toss makes Archon?
I felt little deceived about blizzard, so I did go see the Liquidpedia and there was the same thing. But in Game I don't feel that Archon is just Strong against muta.
What you think?

|
You're thinking too black and white man. But ghosts are the strongest counter to archons, cost for cost.
|
|
Read liquipedia for psionic units:
Units with Bonus Damage Against Psionic
None.
Protoss makes archons 'cause they have good DPS with AoE, they "recycle" HT in a fight, and they have no counter.
|
Actually i think he's asking for what the archon is good against, not whats good against the archon. Many people use it as a meat shield, to tank damage, negate maurader slow and crush forcefields.
|
|
Neural Parasite is also quite good against archons, considering that they have to stand quite in the front, and NP got a huge range.

....apparently you guys really suck at reading the damn OP
@OP:
THe reason why archons suck against mutas is because just like BW once zergs learned how to muta micro they can dance against archons all day long. Archons are more a big beefy unit that is more for banelings/mass zergling
|
Archons are terrible, even zergling can beat them pretty well.
As terran EMP + almost anything is great, as zerg pure roaches crushes archons.

well the title is incredibly misleading then.

In true, want know if information of units don't isn't little wrong?
|
There isn't too much content in here, and really the whole concept of "counters" is very misleading, especially in the current state of the game.
But roaches are very cost effective against archons, and storm isn't as powerful against roaches as other units.
|
Well the general idea is that Archons are good against biological units, so their role certainly isnt limited to just mutalisks.
|
Ghosts, Roaches, Hydras, BCs (lol), Carriers (lol), Voidrays
Oh yeah, voidrays, except pvp usually doesn't go that long
|
Archons are usually the marginally better alternative between a practically instant meat shield and two storms one minute later.
I don't think they do especially well vs mutas, or even that that's something blizzard were intending. Maybe the information is outdated? Archons hard countered mutas in broodwar.
I think strategies focused around the archon primarily are bad in all circumstances though.
|
Mutas, clumped together, can die easily to splash damage if they get hit...and well, Archon has splash damage...but attack has low range, so its hard to hit mutas...
And the counter to Archons are EMP cause their have lots of shield- and few hitpoints. the normal marauder/marine concusiveshell micro should work really good too...and dont forget (cloaked) Banshees :p
Except EMP, there is no "real hardcounter like Viking counter Collosus with terrible terrible damage with each hit"..afaik..
|
Archons take no extra damage from any unit, and give additional damage to every zerg unit/building I have. I bow down to this beast of a unit. Every attack it does is like an instant fungal growth of damage.
|
You can use stimmed marines, terrans just need to start splitting them like vs banelings
Also banshees.
@down: zerglings actually do pretty well vs archons if they get surround. Same with Zealots
|
Easier to think about what isn't the counter. Zerglings, zealots, high templar, vikings, reaper, hellion, phoenix, corrupter.
Everything else works just fine. Nothing is that amazing against it and none of these are bad against it.
oh ya banelings is another non counter
|
Thors vs archons is pretty hilarious.
|
....
making combat units.
Really. thats the counter.
|
Banelings. So many banelings.
In all seriousness, though, the only time i've seen archons not used as a way to recycle high templar is in (I believe the Inca v. Nestea in GSL May finals) a gateway-unit + DT/archon rush, and I vaguely remember there being a strategy article about a Chargelot-Immortal-Archon in PvP.
Also, watching a protoss sneak 2 DTs into a ball of banelings and morph them into an archon is really cool.

|
The archon is pretty terrible against everything. It wouldn't surprise me one bit if someone told me drones are cost effective against archons. They have no counter because everything is good against them. With the smartcasting of SC2, the focus is purely on the templar, whereas the Archon is about as useful as the burrow skill for infestors, or the cloak for ghosts.

Unforunatly thats 1 or 2 archons in small numbers. Once both sides are maxed the splash damage, tanking ability and huge single target damage makes them rediculously overpowered v Z. Considering i was maxed on roach hydra and the guy had stalker zealot archon and beat my army with his 130 food army doesnt really make sense to me.

League and replay in that case please. It sounds like he was 3-3-3 and you were 0-0. Personally I consider them as big zealots in PvZ. A glorified meatshield basically, that's supposed to keep the enemy away from you stalkers, potential collosi, immortals etc.

Essentially this. Thors were a hardcounter before the strike cannon energy change, which makes them kind of a moot point vs archons now because archons could imply HT capability and therefore feedback.
Micro and units-that-can-shoot-and-dont-instantly-die-to-archons are the "counters" to archons.
|
Protoss: Carrier/Void ray/Colossus/Stalker Terran: Ghosts/Battle cruisers Zerg: Brood lords/Infestors (Neural parasite)
Is what i can think of off the top of my head. But i recommend you don't view units as counters to certain other units. Each unit has a time and place to be useful.
|
Ghosts though I would say that 3 EMP's is quite a lot heh.
|
Turn off the stream...
Any who yeah anything that can slow it down remove it's shields or micro away while attacking will normally do well against an Archon. Another way to counter it is by not even letting them get templars to make it just drop him and snipe the building!
|
For Terran, ghosts for sure.
For Zerg, everything but mutas. Roaches are great and fungal does well as they have low range.
|
i would debate cracklings counter archons.... but i may be bias

He's saying, according to Blizzard and LP Archons are ONLY strong vs. Mutas, and he is saying he disagrees/asking why they say that. That's one part though, the other part is what counters them.
|
The counter is...Archons.
