Most of the Yu-Gi-Oh community uses YVD (Yugioh Virtual Desktop) http://www.xerocreative.com/?goto=downloads rather than this.

Does anyone know if MTG has a program that's like this? The only ones I'm aware of atm are Magic Workstation and Apprentice, both of which are beyond primitive and break all the time.

I haven't played Yugioh since I was 14 but this looks like a pretty nice piece of software for anyone still playing the game competitively. Some friends of mine who continued playing after I quit showed me what the metagame is like and it seemed to me that it was a lot like vintage in MTG. If you had more than 4 digits of $ into your deck you were consistantly killing on turn one or two (two in YGO since you can't attack on turn one if you go first). Is this still true?

Nah, games last much longer than they did last format (though that was a $30 deck, and it was winning without even needing to attack, so first turn.) Right now theres Debris, which is largely a control deck. Theres sabers, which tend to cold wave -> wombo combo for game. Theres Gravekeepers, which turn 1 royal tribute you and you cry. Theres Blackwing, which plays the longest games of those 4 decks. Games last differently depending on matchup, saber mirrors can take forever, while blackwing mirrors tend to end a bit faster.

IMO, the best program is this. YVD has some bugs and inconveniences. Finding and building cards is a pain in YVD. Apprentice has a huge lack of players, not to mention odd symbols.
Fear the mango! update, ok I honestly didn't know there was a mod named Mango when I made this

Magic Workstation doesn't really break all the time, it's just their crappy servers. There are others or you can just directly host your games.

YVD has a much better/faster editor than this, I'm not sure why you think it's easier in this. and the community is much higher leveled(depending which forums you find your games, of course, but I don't know anybody that plays KCVDS) I'm not sure which bugs you're talking about, 9.0/9.1 fixed most of the bugs from 8.6.

To my knowledge, YVD has no multiplayer unless you go out on a forum and find someone and put in their IP. Kind of a hassle...

or their username, but yeah, it can be a a hassle. Getting hamachi running is also a hassle though, and the yvd interface is so much cleaner than this.
I suppose I might be a bit biased since I prefer arranging games through forums opposed to finding random games against opponents whose skill levels are unknown to me.

Is it like the game boy version where half the cards are bugged?

Exactly, you probably need hamachi which is a huge pain to setup from my experience.

it's nothing like that, everything is done manually. Basically you enter a room and just assume the other player knows how to play. However there are some limitations with the program that makes it hard to pull off some card abilities, but it's not that bad. Really all this program does is allow you to find an opponent and it limits and forbids certain cards but you can probably make up any rule you like and just play. For example, there is no limit to summoning monsters, you can summon all 5 at once if you want just because the program is free form and allows for players to do what they want. That's why it's kind of imperative that you actually know how to play so you can enforce the rules correctly because the program doesn't.

???

YVD, you hop on Xerocreative's IRC and just play. You could use their servers too to connect. I don't see the problem with that.

That being said, YVD is a much more active community and actually have players worth something (aka those that doesn't just netdeck and win based on card quality).

When I qualified for US nats, I tested my deck for about 4-5 months on YVD before taking it to regionals. It also helped me to get to know some of the other fellow players going to nats that year, definitely, I would recommend YVD over this.

I played until Upper Deck banned all the staple cards around the Pharaoh's Guardian. Also the lame card shop I bought at weighed boosters so no one ever got anything good out of the packs. -_-'

Might give this a spin sometime.

Just got into a match finally. I have doomcaliber knight and d fissure on the field. Opponent tries to activate monster effect, I tell him his effect is negated and both of our monsters are RFG and he disconnects.

To be fair, a lot of people who netdeck the decks are pretty bad leading to quite a few easy wins. There isn't much of a reason to handicap yourself, deckbuilding isn't the only skill in the game. The people who netdeck and win off of card quality usually win because the people they're playing against are bad, it's usually pretty simple to beat a bad player who is using a deck you know card for card, especially if you're also using something top tier. A common proof of this is back during teledad format, the same players (Adam Corn, and Caesar Gonzales, to name the most prominent examples.) topped almost every event they went to, despite almost every match in the event being a mirror.

After a few duels with this, the only REAL problem is enforcing the rules. Just got a heated argument about the activation of Cold Wave.

Funny, I never actually met a troll/dumbass on this game before. Guess you guys are just unfortunate =(. To trynet, you're right. Having good cards means nothing if you suck at using them. Good decks require months to years to master, knowing to use what in what situation, in whatever draw, against whatever. Hamachi is not a requirement, you have to understand that.
EDIT" Lol yeah, some players will rage quit before reaching 0 Life Points, but you still win since there isn't ladder or anything. Joining an game is incredibly easy unlike YVD, just log in and join any duel.
