Game Formattop Eight players (1v1)/teams (2v2) divided into two groups. During the group stages, games will be played out OSL double elimination style, meaning players with two wins advance from the group stages onto RO4. 1v1 sets are BO3; 2v2 sets are BO5.
The BW Asia Open offline tournament will commence on Nov. 29 and span three days until Dec. 1. All games will be played live in SCNTV's studio in Shanghai, and viewers are encouraged to attend the events in person (see this page if you want to know how to get there: http://sc.scntv.com/news/2013-11-07/3145.html).
The tournament has two sections: 1v1 and 2v2. Both events have top players from China and Korea.
Fengzi: ex-pro, Zerg, top player in China. Fengzi has won almost all past Chinese BW events. Presently, he's the undisputed #1 player in China. Though lately, Jaystar has been catching up and taking games off of Fengzi more frequently.
Jaystar: ex-pro, Protoss, top 3 in China. Jaystar is mostly know for his timing attacks and super aggressive style. People in China sometimes call him Jangbi of China. Jaystar is a very strategic player.
Jedi: Zerg player. Don't know much about him. Not so good.
Scan: Scan's been playing in A LOT of tournaments in China and winning quite a few of them as well. Scan beats Fengzi quite consistently, but had some issues against Chinese Protoss players such as Jaystar.
Jat.Girl: a.k.a. Beast. SoSPA.
Pic: don't know.
Movie: SoSPA.
Helios: ex-pro, Terran. Top Terran in China. I personally don't think he's as good as Fengzi or Jaystar.
2v2 Players - I don't watch 2v2, so I can only give limited info:
Fengzi and Scan make a good combo, but Scan has some temper issues in 2v2.
FengG_G and Money defeated Movie and Hero in the online qualifiers.

I'll go take a look, but the Korean invites are disappointing, unless jat.girl and pic are aliases of famous progamers? edit: ninja description of the players!
And Savior pairing with a Chinese player in the 2v2 tournament? How are they going to communicate?

Jat.Girl is Beast, so he is quite strong. They entertained ideas around inviting 'top' players like Sea, but the conclusion was that they did not want to invite someone way above their levels so that at least they have a chance at winning the money (totals to be USD 70K). This is why they invited weaker players (like Beast, Scan and Pic) and had Movie and Savior go through an extra qualifier. I'm pretty sure Movie and Beast will take #1 and #2, with only #3 up for grabs (possibly Jaystar if he doesn't lose to Fengzi).
Meh, I don't really understand why they call it an "Open" if there is no open bracket. But looking forward to the event, I hope some of the chinese players manage to edge out a win against their Korean opponents!

There was an open bracket. This is the Ro8 composed of 3 players from the open bracket, 3 Korean invites, and 1 invite by the sponsor, and one from a wildcard tournament (not sure why this one was organized, if I remember correctly, there were supposed to be 2 invites by sponsor instead of one).
On November 26 2013 19:31 iFU.ZerGgBoY wrote: hope someone adds replays and vod's link for this event!
Replays of the open bracket are available from Ro40 for the 1v1 tournament and Ro24 for the 2v2 tournament. http://ao.scntv.com/
Scroll down, select 1v1 or 2v2 (there are actually tabs, not headers of columns as we could first think) Then X 进 Y means RoX with Y players qualifying.
For MSL Survivor groups: X组 = Group X 胜者战 = Winners match 败者战 = Losers match 最终战 = Final match
VODs are available at: http://sc.scntv.com/vod/yzsc/ . Note: all games containing "外卡赛" are part of the wildcard tournament won by Movie.
I talked with Scan and he says there may be a chance he will be able to stream at the scntv house and possibly cast some games. I also talked with a chinese fan of scan and he/she said the event should be broadcasted on the scntv site.

the wildcard tournament was actually the losers bracket, with two invited players: movie and savior

I remember reading something about bisu participating in the old thread.
don't think so, unless they secretly invited bisu to shanghai
the problem is lag, the sponsor constantly declares his willingness to sponsor events involving koreans (he even says he's willing to host Korean-only tournaments, with proper Chinese cast), but the none of this can happen because of lag (i.e. they can't have Chinese observers/players in the same game with Koreans).

I have F91 as a contact on QQ, he works for SCNTV. I asked if they wanted to open an English stream for that Huge Tournament in Guangzhou, even with just an ob position from an online community caster and SCNTV said they don't need one.
I imagine it would be the same for this tournament. However, no one can stop you from pirate-restreaming their content to twitch.
i could do the cast on live since i know both chinese and english. however, since i am not a native english speaker, so if u guys can tolarate my "low level english", i would be happy to do that.
well we all know how strong chinese wc3 is , this is my 1st time checking out chinese bw , I hope a stream or VODs are provided , will definitely check it out.

All Korean players had to be invited to play in the 2nd half of the qualifier tournament or the main event, and I don't think they invited anyone else (unless that wasn't made public in China, which is doubtful but ultimately possible). The organizers contemplated on inviting Sea, but the idea was quickly shot down because they figured there would be no chance anyone in China could take a game off of him; whereas it's far more likely against Movie (both Fengzi and ZhanHun have during showmatches) and Beast. Sea, Movie and Beast were the only players from SoSPA who had interactions with the Chinese BW scene through showmatches.
With regards to Savior, the sponsor just really wanted to see him play or in person, and that's the end of that.

Have they always been using fengyun (I haven't watched anything live from China for a very long time)?
Fengyun I think works/worked the best for me.
Fengyun became really popular in 2012. Before that was PPTV which forced you to install a plug-in and it didn't work for some people. Fengyun works the best for me too out of all the streaming options.

scan doesnt really know andromeda... he should've put turret on the high ground @ his natural and kill the neutral buildings. Beast basically won with a group of mutas
Both players have one game under their belts. Scan won with a patient, methodical beatdown on beast. Beast then bounces back with a sloppy muta opening into a nicely executed lurk/guard/defiler push. This is getting exciting.
Isn't this game a bit weird? I thought Terran mech armies tended to turtle, save for the occasional Vulture harass. But now it seems that a relatively small Mech army is running around the map.
yep, scan didnt defend well enough to secure top side so he never had a good chance to win. There were a few times where I thought he might hold but then you could see the sea of red on the minimap.
It actually seems like 2v2 semis are delayed because of the Scan vs beast set. The 2v2 set should've started 40-50minutes ago. Seems like they are taking a 10-20minute break if anything.
EDIT: Oh shit nevermind, the 2v2 set starts at 19:00 China time so yea 1hr break
fengzi / movie will be after the 2v2. They look quite even in 2v2 and beast/pic look better than both these teams. Maybe if Beast wins mOvie he will take 1v1 AND 2v2 title, damn he gonna be rich
From what I heard from Scan(Who heard from fengzi), he said the SCNTV house was 1000ft2 ,but this could've been something else. Keep in mind they were also running a SC2 stream ,so there is a possibility there were two parts to this stadium.

You have to think about this from a different perspective.
With this amount of money (and paid flights and hotels too), without a stretch, they could have invited anyone they wanted. The point is (practically free trip and free money), this is still mostly a Chinese tournament, despite the name suggesting otherwise. The sponsor and the fans did not want to just hand money over to Korean players who just play on different planes. They could get high level players for free via SRT, SSL etc. The point of this tournament was to have Chinese players compete against Korean players in not-so-onesided fashions.
Most people in China really like Movie and Beast because in their past exhibition matches, they tried to make the games interesting, and would (in my opinion) frequently play odd and unorthodox strategies so that the Chinese players actually have a decent shot at winning. I don't think they ever played a series in the past where they ended up X-0'd the opponent, when everyone knows they very well could have, with ease. This is perceived as friendly and polite in Asian cultures, and very well received.
Having said all of that, the sponsor did say he was willing to financially sponsor online Korean only exhibition matches with prizes exceeding Sonic's means, but they have problems of getting Chinese observers into the game without lag.

Having said all of that, the sponsor did say he was willing to financially sponsor online Korean only exhibition matches with prizes exceeding Sonic's means, but they have problems of getting Chinese observers into the game without lag.
I think Sonic and the Chinese sponsors should partner up and so the Chinese can sponsor SSL and fly those StarGirls/Caster in Korea.
According to one of the Chinese posts earlier in the thread, Sonic really wanted the Chinese sponsor to not let Savior play, but the Chinese sponsor really likes Savior, so he ended up playing. Sonic said he will not let Chinese players play in future SOSPAs (this might be a rumour, so correct me if I'm wrong), so I think relations between Chinese and Sonic aren't exactly great at the moment.
I am so excited to see so many foreign friends love this game. I come from China. In my thinking, except Korea, China, no other country's people love this game. I am definitely wrong. In China, beside this match, there are also many other matches. One followed one, we have live telecast to see almost every day. The most regretful things is, sometimes these matches interfer with each other, we have to choose one of them to watch. The match are mostly sponsored by some young rich guys who loves BW. Next Tuesday, the 3rd COSL 2v2 match will begin. 32 to 16. Champion win 50K RMB, about $8K. There are also some Korea players in it. If you can read chinese. You can hit link: http://bbs.scntv.com/thread-79933-1-2.html. Maybe you had ever heard of some ids. At least you should probably know Movie. 1v1: Movie, Jatgirl, Fengzi, Scan 2v2: Savior+334, Jatgirl+pic, Fengzi+Scan, FengG-G+Money.

Just watched the final vod and I'm really impressed by this tournament. It looks like it was a really awesome event. Really hope they'll continue organising tournaments like this. Also, I've become a Fengzi now, he seems like a pretty cool guy on stage.
Bleh, I meant to update the results.... and post the replays (probably only the 1v1s due to he-who-must-not-be-named) at some point, probably this weekend

For the people who weren't sure with the player name "Pic", he is Capi from iCCup. Long ago 2v2 user. He quit iCCup because of the lag he did not like(he does not like to play on high/extra high latency).
