This seems to be a working solution:

^That isn't a solution, I still crash but it's very rare. Probably the best bet right now though.

1. DISABLE the "Enable Color Cycling" checkbox in the Gameplay section of the in-game Menu. It worked for me.

2. Try the registry edits shown on pages 21 and 23 of this thread; this fixed my color issues.

Good luck.

There is no a working solution yet besides w-mode in Chaoslauncher.

But, here's a good workaround to make your Starcraft work on Windows 7:

1. Enable Window Mode in Chaoslauncher.

2. Change your Windows resolution to 640x480 and position your Starcraft in Window mode so it fits the screen perfectly.

3. Use Alt + F1 to lock your cursor inside Starcraft window, so you can scroll normally in game.

4. In case you can only change your resolution to 800x600 in Display Settings, click Advanced and go to Adapter settings. There find "List all modes" option and click it. When you find all modes, choose the one where it says "640 by 480, True Color (32bit), xx Hz" (note: choose highest number of xx you find).

I play SCBW on linux, because is so much faster than W****** when playing online.
I tried playing Warcraft III on WXP and on Ubuntu (with Wine). In WXP I had a ping of 200-250ms. In Ubuntu a had a ping of 15-17ms. Really, I did not mean 150-170ms. And I was using the same laptop with the same disk space for each OS and playing the same game (DotA), on the same server.

Try Ubuntu.
What's a quote anyway?

Virtual machines don't directly access the hardware, so it makes zero difference if a card has a win9x driver. The VM uses a virtual video driver. It will pretty much suck at 3d, but guess what Starcraft isn't.

don't do it if you value your time. Just for playing BW, sure give it a shot. Making it your fulltime desktop is a waste though. Also LOL at the pings. The OS you use has no bearing on the internet between you and your competitor, which is what most affects ping. You aren't given special access to a faster internet because your ISP sees you are using an alternate OS. People mocked the KillerNIC for claiming it would improve your ping when all it could affect was your computer. Maybe a millisecond here or there. Same with your OS. You can't change the topology of the intervening network by changing your OS. What you are experiencing is Illusory Correlation

Is there any possibility that this directdraw issue with Windows 7 will be resolved in a future M$ update? I've been playing/streaming with windowed mode, but after playing on full screen for so long, it leaves a lot to be desired. Another user described it best when he said it feels like your mouse is moving through syrup in windowed mode.

I guess I'm done with bw until some kind of solution appears for full screen on W7 OS.

I see you haven't tried Ubuntu yet.
No matter what the ping was, the game effectively runs faster and less laggy on Ubuntu, and A LOT faster on Debian.

Good luck.

Disabling color cycling makes SC crash a lot less, but it does not solve the problem fully, it might still change the palette at alt-tab and game enter/exit, so it can crash due to the lack of directdraw locking in Windows 7
The registry edit doesnt solve it either, it seems it only changes the palette update frequency

You seem quite knowledgeable about DirectDraw, maybe you could help out these guys:

i never had the crash symptoms and im running on win 7. only thing i have to do is click on desktop and open resolution window before starting bw.

oh i think i had crash before just in beginning when running it via cd, but mounting solved that.

strange how the same operating system can have different problems?

How would opening the resolution window possibly solve BW crashing in W7? They don't seem to have any links between them.

the iccup link solution worked for me... though it is a minor inconvenience since there's no start menu or desktop icons when you alt tab, and you can't adjust the master volume while playing.
But it does stop the crashes and as a bonus fixes the colours!
