No it doesn't. You will still have to kill explorer or run Screen Resolution in the background.
I have been playing it every day for the last week and it hasn't crashed since. It used to crash all the time when I had anything else in the background that can play sounds.
I have Win7 32bit though.

I believe its the Aero/new interface that's screwing up the resolution.

The old win9x interface is more useful, compact, Way more responsive imo. Hence not exactly a loss to sacrifice for BW

I've always used the classic theme but I have the color issue o_O

sadly, this didn't do shit for me. In fact, made it seem like the crashes were happening more often :\

Somehow it fixed colors too. 4 hours of test run - no crashes.

Enjoy.
No, not at all. DEP has nothing to do with it, UAC has nothing to do with it.

Again no. Unless you plan on disabling DirectDraw, which then the game won't run anyway.

the only problems i have are the colors that are messed up outsider of games, but in games the colors are usually fixed, so BW has never really been a problem for me
but this is obviously some conflict in the programming; is there any easy way to fix this?
if you have a decent solution PM me the post please cause i might forget abotu this thread :D The colours may look ok, but they are not. Look for water and you will see what i mean. the only real fix is a wrapper or the reg patch.

I've also heard that while in fullscreen you cna simply go to the ingame options menu and disable colour cycling and that should be it. This is for crashes , I don't know about colour.
Disabling colour cycling has no impact. There is no reduction in crashes or freezes, the problem is random in its occurence in the first place.
No, this does not Patch anything involving directdraw.

The colour issue is caused by explorer cycling the palette while starcraft is using it, Aero has nothing to do with it. You can run with aero completely off and have it work one run, and then not the next.
The crashes are caused by running any application that uses directdraw/GDI or directshow alongside starcraft, this goes for winamp, live messenger, even firefox. Audio applications HAVE NOTHING to do with it.
Now, we need help guys, obviously we can't get information for all games as a 2 playa team, so anyone who can provide debug info, traces, and can learn how to use the ddhack logger can join us on the ddhack project.

Broodwar used to freeze on my windows 7 ultimate 32-bit when I had wmp, chrome or anything that can play sounds. And it happened everytime without exceptions. Sometimes during the first game sometimes later, but it always happened.
After the patch I have been playing for more than 2 weeks without any crashes or freezing and I have music, chrome, and miscellaneous other proggies running and I have played loads of games -NO CRASHES-
Microsoft says the patch fixes the following symptom:
Assume that you run an application that uses Direct2D or Direct3D and that hosts Windows Internet Explorer components on a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2. In this situation, the application may crash.
Edit: squall leonhart maybe I should tell my windows that the patch doesn't do anything involving directdraw and the problem shouldn't be fixed eh?

URL Doesnt work edit: NVM found a working one, thx

Many people run it fine on windows 7, including me. So you don't need to fix windows 7, but probably a specific driver.

It's still way to hit or miss.

Sounds have NOTHING to do with it. the patch has NOTHING to do with it.
You're just getting lucky and maintaining yourself within the error ratio of chance.
The patch does not affect GDI, DirectDraw or WASAPI.

Nothing to do with drivers. It occurs on Intel, ATI, Nvidia and S3 drivers under windows 7.

first of all, I want to warn you for my horrific explanation, since I run a dutch version, so I'm not capable of giving you the right terms, but I hope it's still readable -_-
I use Vista myself and I was able to fix the colour glitch without any patching. Even though vista and win7 aren't the same, it might (hopefully) work.
1. Right-Click the shortcut/the game 2. Open the settings menu, go to 'compatibility' 3. a) compatibility mode : windows 95 b) settings : all options activated (don't know if this is really needed, but it did the trick) c) run as an administrator 4. Go to the 'Settings for all users'-options at the bottom of the 'compatibility'-menu 5. Repeat step 3
Now start the game and hope that it's alright ^^ Even though it's not for Win7, it might help those few vista-users that are having the same problems as everyone else here did.
I run a 64-bit version of vista.
Hope it works ^^
Compatibility settings have no bearing on the issue.

Ugh, whats this crap?
DirectDraw registry hacks, like my w7ddrawpatcher are not a end all solution. Forcing explorer.exe to close is not a solution. Compatibility mode does nothing. Wrapping DirectDraw > more recent API like the wrapper I am working on (and Wine) is a proper & solution.
