i wouldn't begin to try giving a timeline on that.
first things first is getting the default mode able to handle window positioning more efficiently, so as to fix the blackscreens on the bnet login page that altwinpos causes.
after that.... getting implementation to a point that it can handle other ddraw titles, and hopefully getting blizzard to whitelist the wrapper for official bnet.

so squall what are you saying?
You think that I am just lucky that since I patched it SC:bw stopped freezing the computer?
If the patch doesn't really address the problem and it fixed my problem then the problem I had has to be a different one from the others. Yet it has the same symtoms, Starcraft freezes the computer, sounds keep coming, screen freezes and the computer doesn't respond to alt+tab shift+esc+ctrl mouse etc. forcing me to power off
Are there anyone who still suffer from the problem even after applying the D2D/D3D patch?

Using Chaos Launcher to run in windowed mode seems to work for me. Playing through the normal launcher makes it crash often for me.

I've had this problem for a long time and i fixed it.
Go to option, I think display, then UNCHECK 'enable color cycling'
you will no longer have BW freezing, but you will have color going totally messed up once in a while. alt tabbing or pausing the game fixes this issue for me.

This is the saddest thing in my life. playing in windowed mode is a horrible solution for me for various reasons and i have tried all the suggested fixes with no real luck. it suckssss

This thread never fails to give me false hope. I've also discovered that even if there was a fix, ATI scaling is even more broken than it has ever been

omg is there still no fix to windows 7? =(
why are there 18 pages to this thread and still no solution
every ~6 games of BW, my computer freezes and i have to force shut down and run it back up
also yeah windows mode really lags up the game; every game in windows mode (even on fastest) is like 15% slower
edit: bout time scbw got a blizzard patch 1.16.2 i think

Not a fix. a workaround that extends the time before it occurs.

not all causes of the DDraw freeze are the same. i've got both SP1 and the hotfix in question installed and can still reproduce the freeze partially in starlancer, a d3d game that uses directmedia/ddraw between missions, and the game freezes at random points while moving about the menu. Age of Empires 2 still black screens at random with no chance of recovery and starcraft still results in no input when WLM, WMP or FF are running in the background.
The more applications you have open that intefere with the colour palette the more likely it is to happen. I expect it would be reduced in occurence with FF4 and WMP2011 because of the usage of Direct2D/3D acceleration on the gui.

Installed Windows 7 on my new PC the other day AND IT SEEMS TO RUN BW :D. No more dual booting and switching between Vista :3. And we all know what that means: more BW streaming!
I also plan on upgrading my internet connection next week, so hopefully I'll be back to streaming very often.
When I run BW I've been keeping the screen resolution window open and it hasn't crashed yet. I haven't tried it without keeping the window open, but I'll try it eventually. weeeeeee

Ughh wtf? This is unusually douche even for Blizzard. This issue has existed for like 2 years and they haven't patched it. It seems pretty arbitrary though which is the most annoying part. On my media desktop that I watch movies on BW runs without crashes in full screen, however on my desktop that I use for gaming it crashes. Someone needs to compile all the potential fixes for this so I can do them all. I asked Blizzard tech support and they just blew smoke up my ass.

Hey guys, I, like many of you, can not play on Windows 7 without the game freezing into oblivion. I decided to give wnidowed mode a shot and once I was launched inside a one vs one game I could only scroll up and right. Any idea how to fix this?

That allows me to stay within the boundaries of broodwar. I did just that. The problem is when I am inside a broodwar game it does not let me scroll up or down with my mouse. just left or right. Edit: It only allows me to scroll in all directions if I don't play in "2X" mode for Windowed. If i play without that than I can scroll in all directions (but that is way too small for my liking). Is there a problem with "2X" mode?

I sent you a PM but might as well post it here.
This is the best workaround imo: 1. Right click on your Chaoslauncher icon -> Properties.
2. Select "Run in 640x480 screen resolution" under Compatibility tab.
3. Run Chaoslauncher in Window Mode
4. Use Alt + F1 to lock your cursor inside Starcraft window, so you can scroll normally in game. (you only have to do this once).
With this workaround your desktop resolution will change to 640x480 everytime you start Chaoslauncher. That is also the resolution on which the BW is played so the game will appear to be in full screen, even though it's in window mode. One important tip is that you have to position your Starcraft window perfectly so it aligns on all 4 sides of your screen. If it's out of the position you will be unable to scroll with mouse in game on some sides. (After you exit Chaoslauncher, your Desktop Resolution will revert to your original one without messing up your icons!).

Oh, I get what you mean by now. I did that for Iccup Launcher and it does load Broodwar in 640 x 480 mode. How do I position the starcraft window perfectly so that it aligns to all 4 sides of the screen? I just can't get that done...and I am able to scroll in-game up/left/right...but not down.

Since you can't scroll down it means you have to move the window little up. It's a little tricky but click on that red line at top and move it up so much that you don't see that line anymore. Play around with it, it's not that hard once you get the hang of it.

simplest to state fix set 16bpp when creating the ddraw screen.
unfortunately its not so simple to implement
