That said, it is in the best interests of the ladder itself to have as many participants as possible so that everyone is ranked with maximum granularity. I would like for Ranked to be the default game mode, and I'd really like to launch with no Unranked matchmaking at all (you'd have to go through manual lobby creation). Ideally that would help to reduce ranking anxiety and generally destigmatize ladder. Then again, I'm fully aware of how widespread ladder anxiety was in SC2 when they had the same launch strategy... | ||

Idk some people might disagree but the way i see it now, it's amazing aside from the small details that aren't exactly game changing. The main problems that turned people away from BW was probably matchmaking/ranking systems and lat problems. Those should be priorities. | ||

Back in 2006 or so before I discovered the PGT ladder I used to just hang out in public channels on the Europe server and chat, watch replays and play casual games with the dudes who were on every night like I was. There were no ranks and your public wins/losses didn't mean anything. It was much less competitive, you didn't really have a feel for how good you were vs how good someone else was. Sure, there were people who beat you or who you beat, but there wasn't a metric to judge that by. Shield Battery right now feels like being back in Brood War GBR-1. And although iccup has its advantages, and certainly made me a better player, it was never social in the way that bw used to be for me. I don't know if I'm explaining it well but hopefully other people remember the same experience. | ||
