why not just do the obvious solution and have 2 match-up types?

1) auto matchmaking where you just pick your race and that's it
2) manual matchmaking - the way it works in BW, where you host the game and someone can join your lobby ?

Tell that to everyone discussing and working on the automatching right now. I think the thorough discussion and design followed by a willingness to iterate and accept feedback will lead to a very well made system.

I think its better to start this discussion after the auto matchmaking feature has been released and people have had a go at it for a while.

there will always be someone dissatisfied with it though, that's just how it is.
Either way, I don't really see how one has to cancel out the other.
I think making it only auto-matchmaking is a mistake.
Making only-lobby system is also a mistake, though a smaller one.

Making both is the best way to go.
Doing both also does not mean that the auto matchmaking system shouldn't be discussed and worked on until it's actually good.

I would be more interested in easily accessible data that tells me what times the server is most popular, so I know when my best chance of getting some games in without waiting is. I think the mission statement of the server should be to get you a game as fast and conveniently as possible, making the most of a very small population of players. Features like matchup preferences and stuff would have rocked 10 years ago, but I think you need to wait to see if there's enough players for them to start making wishlists like that. You'll probably be lucky if match making on skill even works.

Exactly. All this huff about race picking and random RIGHT NOW is a non- issue imho. We need to actually have a WORKING SHIELD BATTERY out and THEN let's work on fine tuning it. To everyone invoIved in this project: Thank you for your effort! Will definitely play more often when it comes out.

I don't know if a new member's opinion has any weight, but please consider carefully if opensource is really a good idea. I fear that competing servers might re-use the code looking for a profit.

I know at least one other game that is plagued by this issue: released 14 years ago, declining playerbase, still loved by many. But there are so many private servers for the game that the already small community is completely spread out, and alot of players are lost because of failed servers and corrupt admins. It would be a nightmare if this happened to Starcraft as well..

Someone earlier in the thread implied the people who run the Korean servers are real snakes, so I've been wondering about this. But if the goal is to consolidate the foreign scene only, I don't think any other server will have a chance of competing with TL for that audience. TL can clear up any attempts at subversion, and no other group is going to have the dedication to run a better server outside of China and Korea. And China and Korea have shown that they don't care to play with foreigners. So I can't see harm in having it open source.
