So I wanted to play BW, I find it more enjoying than SC2 (I kinda rage quit after I saw that PvP finals recently) got into BW again, played against AIs, can win, play against real people, I don't know what to do, I don't know how to counter or what to build... Fast lurkers, I don't know how to hold that..

Can someone help me? I am now like D- with 764 pts.

my iccup id is tSn.DjKniteX and I play Terran

can someone teach me how to play?

Read this: http://wiki.teamliquid.net/starcraft/Terran_Strategy
(Along with other tutorial stuff - like the early episodes of day9 daily, which were all bw, etc)
Then play until your hands hurt - and voila!

Edit: And carefully watch other (good) players play the game!

Out of curiosity: What's that pvp final about. And how can a match other people played make you quit a game?

You will get a ton of different answers and honestly the one you should get and I mean no disrespect, is using the TL search function as there are tons of these threads in existence over the past year now. Ultimately your best friend is here:

I remember when I started out on iccup; 2007, I thought i was the shit, I didnt drop a game on b.net. I ended up losing about thirty games straight.

edit: Point is, you will probably become frustrated/despondent, just remember its normal to get thrashed.

If this helps make you feel any better i kinda lost 10 straight matches before i won 2 matches then proceeded to lose another 7 before winning another one match. That sums up my beginning of broodwar multiplayer. I still feel like shit whenever i play nowadays.

And one more thing. Since you are terran you are not gonna like tvp.

Terran is the best when you reach higher levels. I like the fact that whenever you win a game against higher ranked players (C/C+/B-/B) they just whine that Terran is IMBA

This is how i felt when i was playing my first games. I just learned one build for each matchup and went from there, slowly evolving each build depending on what my opponent was doing.

Just play a tonne of games! you will feel yourself improving after awhile.

this can't be emphasized enough lol. You need to play a lot of games at the beginning. When I started as terran, I was losing to early pools(guessing 8 or 9 at the time). Once my opponent got lings in my base, I just couldn't get rid of them that easily and by the time I did, he had more rallied. Eventually, I'll gg after losing most if not all of my workers. After that happened several times, I started placing an SCV(or two) on the ramp with a marine or more behind it(usually whenever I went 1 rax cc) and started to keep my scout alive for longer to see what's going on and such. It made a big difference to the point where I wasn't losing to early pools anymore. Point is, just keep playing. Once you get used to the keys, control, the game will only get better

with the bw pro-scene no longer around and the rising number of these former pros streaming, watching their fpvods can actually help you a tremendous amount as well. mass gaming is one thing but if you mass game with the wrong ideas and techniques, you will hit a ceiling sooner or later. seeing fpvods will give you a real time sense of timings and techniques that they employ.

one of the things that i learnt really well was breaking a lurker contain and seeing how bisu usually does a simple zealot drop in his bases to draw his attention away before he fires away at the containment. its such subtle but pivotal things that they usually do that is missed out on broadcasted games that you can pick up from there. so yes while you mass game, also watch their fpvods because it really did help me a bunch.

watch the old day9 dailies. Watch them now, watch them over and over every time you hit a different rank, and you'll find them useful in very different ways.

Although I don't disagree with the concept, rather hard to pull off as just doing one build for every single game gets very tedious very quickly.

i remember a really useful hint ..

when i was still starting to play .. i also made a thread and remember that liquid'drone or was it liquid'nazgul i cant seem to remember who said it. anyways that person said to me that "you can make it less mechanically tedious to put all production buildings on one screen "

it was really helpful it actually made my life a little easier when playing .. like for example put all the barracks close to each other and bind the center barracks unto your control group so that when you are macroing you dont forget a single barracks not producing a marine and making it easier in your part to macro since you see them all in one screen ..

i think you get my point

There are two ways of playing BW depending on your approach:

The Mechanic way:
Try one of the openings and then focus on building the Tier 1 units, then if you feel that you need to tech up to 2nd tier, go for it and continue to experiment with unit composition until you feel comfortable with all of them. Keep in mind to saturate your bases while produce at high efficiency.

The Strategical way:
Devise your own strategy. If one aspect of your strategy doesn't work, analyze it. Is it a mechanic problem? If so, keep trying that strategy. If its not, then its most likely be the viability of the strat itself, so change it. Evolve the strategy as you play.

You'll end up developing both strategy and mechanics w/ both ways and more or less the same number of games played. It all depends on your gaming mindset.

It's important to realize that even the top S-class progamers sometimes struggle. No one is perfect at the game, it's just a matter of who is closer to perfect.

I feel like zerg has the hardest time with mechanics. I mean zerglings are so weak, one second you'll have a huge group of them and the next they're all melted already. Especially difficult to have to think about larvae when the other races do not (but they do take money into account of course).

Terran is very powerful and seems to have the most pro support behind it atm. The strategy sections on liquipedia are deeper, and stuff like Light's blog are really helping a lot of people get better at Terran.

That said, play whatever race you feel like, just remember it's a long road.
Please PM me with any songs you like that you think I haven't heard before!

Yeah, just stick with it. No reason to try to learn the "easier" races if it's Terran that you really enjoy playing. And as others have mentioned it will pay off when you get to higher level being Terran.

I went from D to D+ just by doing mech on Destination every single game. I agree with the practice one build order. It's not as boring as it sounds as your opponents will have variance to keep you on your toes so you'll have to learn to adjust your build as the game progresses.
