Hi, im an StarCraft player from Cuba, for a couple of years our country has tried to established a solid SC:BW scene. For years we had tournaments, but only 40 or 5o people were inscribed, 10 of them were decent, 4 were good; when the finalists had to give a show to only 12 spectators in a players house
In 2009, a level of organization was enough to achieve what few thought possible in a country with such limitations, were internet is extremely rar and those few who has it, only conect with 56k modem conection, like myself. But then, 120 participants, and a lot of sweating and hard work from both players and an Organization thats not legalized, which means is just a bunch of people, without any type of payment, manage to organize events bigger and bigger, with finals of this calibre, that some dare to wrongly compare to korean or chinese events finals:
The first big event was the HSL finals in the Maxim Rock Theatre, were Hokage and Rockstar faced each other, and i, an active player, was the caster, and i swear to god, when i exit the building, 30 minutes before the event began, and saw a crowd that big, staring at me, whispering *thats xerox, the t legend* *thats the caster*, and throwing pictures, when our play level doesnt compare to those of the A class iccup, i had to rush inside, because a tear ran trough my eye, and called my entire team to see that, the same reaction came, that was one of the most emotives moments in my entire life.
And just look at the support TL gave us, thats something we wont forget, that wasnt to a single poster, nor an Organization, but to an entire comunity of gamers in a country, were the internet restrictions makes it impossible to access any type of b.net. Maybe 11 pages is a thread is no big deal for any of the regular Tlnetizens, but when i gave the link to fellow player and they saw those unforgettable 11 pages, the reaction was to press alt+f4 and open SC, "Dude, call someone, i wanna fucking play SC al day long", those 11 pages were fuel for us, thanks TL, you may never know how much you supported us.
Now another event ocurred, an event which took the best 16 in the elo rank (i did mention we have an oficcial rank, right, right?) and trow them all in 4 groups to fight to one of the most dificult tourneys made, i made to the finals, after what people thought that i was in a slump with no end, again, receiving support from fans is something that i have never experienced like this time, it really touches my the level of general SC in this island
We have a sistematic thing called BIT, which stands for Boletin Informativo ADEC, "ADec informative bolletin" Its a document ind PDF format that is send to an email-list with a lot.....a Lot of people and it contains Interviews, ranking, fan art, everything related to the cuban starcraft scene, is made, once again by the players and the ADEC.
This BIt contains the ranking for the month of June.
After all of this, ive come to realize that, we now train a lot more than we use to, there is so much competition, some fans begin to see you as a mark to surpass, and so, we must train a lot harder, everyday we play with ourselves, everyday we evolve, we have our own style, an hibrid betwen Korean and International, we have our own, dare to say, style, some players even create their own play, zvt is different, cuban ZvT is a mix betwen old korean and modern korean, is an example of what cubans are capable of.
Now i have an oportunity like noone in the cuban scene had, i will travel to a foreign country, to finally play with the world to test myself, and the entire scene, to you, to see if we are really worthy of being known to you.
I will be there 15 days, and i certanly can play 15 days on iccup to achieve maybe B and there play 1 day with gosus, so, i ask to TL.net, if i have the option to play with anyone, who is at least a bit known to the comunity, will you give me A SHOWMATCH?
EDIT: It doesnt have to be a showmatch with commentators or streamed, just that a good o gosu player will agree to play wiht me is more than enough, i would love to test myself , if thats the case i would create another thread about those mathces, thanking the players and reps, if they dont want to give reps then i would just tell how the games went
FINAL EDIT: Ok im going to spain THIS SATURDAY, and will be able to play the first 7 days, from the 17th to the 24th, since ill go to ibiza and i dont think ill play from there lulz.
SO ANYONE WHO WANTS TO PLAY WITH ME LEAVE ME A PM WITH SOME CONTACT INFORMATION, THE DAY I CAN, I WILL CONTACT YOU AND WE WILL PLAY, im pretty sure there is a VOD with all the people i play with in my trip and i will upload it so you can be part of it, i only ask for player to be C+ or more
Hi guys, i am Naster from Cuba, just a rookie zerg, hope some day i could manage the Zerg like Xerox manage the Terran, just give him a chance to play with some of you, i will traveling to a foreign country soon too, and hope to play on iccup bnet. Nice post, very sentimentalist for the xerox part, lol. GG GL HF, for sure the comunity of SC in Cuba will grow up to the next level.
Just as you said, a tear ran through my eye reading this article!
Good work guys, I can only imagine what it was like being in that scene from the beginning and I only hope you never quit playing BW for some "other" games .
xerox v. pokebunny gogogo . JK, but seriously someone gosu play this guy. And Day[9] should cast it. The SC:BW community should always support it's members.
Wow, I never read about the Cuban scene, I totally missed those threads. The level of organization seems absolutely amazing.
Great job, xerox and everyone else involved. You guys seem to have made something pretty unique in the world. Other than Korea and China, where else in the world are there offline SC tournaments like this?
great, the organization is good at first glance, I hope other Latin American countries also took the initiative in conducting these types of events and so add to massify this and more adherent to this game: D

That would be like the best thing ever, i would do anything

if you've read his previous threads, let's just say he could 5-0 pokebunny in a bo9 (with just mouse)
let him play nony imo sike nony would crush him ez
but srsly we should get a showmatch going i am hyped
OMG of course im not that good, geting my ass whiped by nony would be the biggest acomplishment i would ever achieve in my entire SC life, let alone if i manage to win just one game.
I dont know how non-korean gamers schedules work, but im pretty sure Nony or other TOP player would be extremely bussy to do that
Pokebunny is a celebrity in TL right? So playing with him or any other known user will be more than enough.
im pretty sure youre right, but we cant be sure unless we try, maybe were not b, but C, or maybe we are a? i dont know, ive seen the growth of our level and is actually good.
OFC any of those guys would rape me, but the point of the showmatch isnt exactly winning, but believe me i will train, and a lot of good players will help me train, so if i play, it will be a good show, i promise.
And yeah Pbunny, ive seen you in a lot of threads here (im kinda of a lurker) and youre very well known here :D
u guys want reps? i dunno if thats a good idea, keeping the mystery would be better? or relasing a couple of reps is better? dunno....

I don't think it would be bad. In fact, I think it would increase the hype. I don't know how much do you people follow the Korean scene (I guess not much since it's hard without quality broadband), so I'm sure you don't cookie cut as much as us (and cookie cutting is not always optimal, since no one out of Korea is nowhere near pro), creating fun and interesting games. Post post post!
Updated: It doesnt have to be a showmatch with commentators or streamed, just that a good o gosu player will agree to play wiht me is more than enough, i would love to test myself , if thats the case i would create another thread about those mathces, thanking the players and reps, if they dont want to give reps then i would just tell how the games went
Some of us follow the korean scene closely, without reps, for example, im always, ALWAYS on those threads where posters kinda cast the game, thats how i watch the events :D, like a lot of other players, then we get the vods later (sometimes a lot later, i watched the flash vs movie finals just 3 weeks ago), thats an examplo of how important the live reports are for myself.
EDit: yeah, i forgot, xorgetra is our provider, everytime he travels he downloads 100s of g in vods, mind you hes not an starcraft player(micro maps only), but a gosu dota or other game i dont recall, so his efforts are incredible appreciated
I take care of that shalafi, every time i go out of cuba i download 200 - 300 GB from TL Vod's .. and that is every 3 months. then when i come back i copy to all the players the VOD's to their external hard drives

Jordi(xerox).... Awesome job!! is good to show the TL comunity our life as cuban players i really hope you can play whit some gosu players and show them our level
Wow, it's so nice to see people with such heart! You have everything against you and you still strive for greatness! Your spirit can rise above any embargo! BTW Iccup or someone really needs to goto cuba and set them up a server. Post the vods of the finals if you can!
Edit: Okay here's the plan, it's only 90 miles from cuba to key west. Who's got a 90 mile ethernet cable?
Yeah well, cuba has all of the internet ports or proxys (i dont know jack about that) are closed, only the ones for downloads or a few thing are open, so we cant T_T and there is the option of hamachi and garena but really, not very good starcrafters use it, and we we try it it lags like hell
Xerox, I'm sure someone with programing knowledge could get around it. Maybe a tunnel or emulation program that converts ports. I'm only moderately knowledgeable about such things though. However, It'd be much nicer if your government just opened the BW ports lol. Don't think thats gonna happen. Do you play modem connect with the phone numbers? Thats what me and my friends used to do with SC vanilla and warcraft(spawn) back in the day.

Yeah, i tried a program that somehow made mi internet run trough a diferent proxy or something like that, i mage to enter icc and even join/host games, but the lag was unbearable, like frame by frame with a 2 seconds interval, since i use a 56k modem conection that conects at 49k LOL
We dont use the modem option of the sc, its extremely laggy and frankly useless. We use a windows option called Incoming Connections, which when active lets another modem conect to your PC (the other modem dials up like a normal Internet connections except the number is your friends telephone) then we play using LAN/UDP option, no lag at all XD.
Its a shame about the government measures but they have their reasons and since im not a born Cuban id rather not interfere with other country politics.
On a diferent and totally unrelated topic, i have another reason tl.net could support me:

This is such a nice story. It's really inspiring to see how people that hardly even have internet access are still such big fans of starcraft. I hope you find a willing gosu to play against ^^. If you want to play a friendly game for practice/training, you can find me on iccup ID: pawsom.
Good luck in your showmatch, I'll be rooting for you to turn a few heads
Nice post and true History from the scene of Bw in cuba right now. I think Xeroox Its a very good T player and if the Macth are taking place, he manage to playing good and maybe are surprices. He its not as good as me :D but he play very good sc. Go Xeroox crutch everyone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Im pretty sure this is wrong and a bit douche of me, but cant an admin or mod put this in highligths? im pretty sure more people could watch it and know about this, maybe more known people would want to play with me? im sorry to ask but i just have like 4 or 5 interesting people to play with (Rage i cant fucking wait) and i would like to play with some more........
this is so awesome. I hope your leagues continue on for a long time. Starcraft is such a beautiful game and the attention you give it is truly remarkable
Fuck me, awesome videos. Congrats on organizing such an incredibly successful tournament. Seeing such raw passion for SC almost brings a tear to my eye too......

it would be a fight against the lag box that keeps popping up... lol i know this joke isn't very tasteful, but castro is known to lag. i actually feel sorry for the cubans i would play you, i'm near C level on a good day
not sure if i would like to play showmatch thou, just some practice games at iccup would be fine with me, i just want to know the date you will start playing on iccup ;D

yeah, some games on iccup are more than enough, the day i arrive ill open a thread about it and contact all the people who want to play, im hyped xDD

TL, please arrange showmatches for this!!!
I think that with the people ive arranged to play will have to do, its a pitty not to many players are interested in this, perhaps if a manage to play good theyl react for the next time (if theres on, fucking sc2 lol)
Last summer i went to Cuba, and the only player whose play level actually impressed me was Xerox, he has a very decent sense of timings and micro/macro, since he doesnt train using the internet his knowing of the game is quite extense and his TvP and TvZ are really good, i think is important that the best terran in cuba is given the chance in TL.net of playing a Gosu for the growth of E-Sports. Oh, and Im B on iccup, and we when play he beat me sometimes, so he could compete with some of them.
i think xerox is actually the best terran in cuba his level on iccup must be near to B+ or A- he will play a very good showmatch no matter the player he face GO XEROXXXXXX!!!!
yeah, good promotion and still very few people would play with me, wonder why............anyway, there is still a month so i guess there is still time?
well, all its being prepared here. Soon i will post a full coverage about the event, time, date, and stream data. Three commentators, and the best chilean players of each race will play in a friendly showmtach with stream and video support.

No desire to think about that game. If it weren't for that game, Xerox would have an awesome showmatch with someone all lined up. Instead people ignore it. Sad.

Actually No_eL found me some chilean gosus with spanish casting which is a very cool offer. Other than that ive been busy and since my B-day was last saturday i wen to varadero beach and kinda lost track of everything for a while, i will go buy my plane ticket tomorrow so ill arrange a good showmatch i promise, thanks for all the support, im pretty sure TL.net wont let me down and help me find an awesome showmatch.......

Yes, i don't want this to die as well. Why don't we start a campaign to arrange a showmatch between 4 best Cubans and Day[9] ?
If you read the OP you will see that Cuba has all the INTERNET ports or something closed so no b.net can be accessed and we have 56k modem connections only so its impossible for us to play with the world.
I will travel to europe however, and since ive became kind of a celebrity in cuba and a bit known in TL.net due to all of this cuban sc thing, i wan to use the oportunity of being in another country with no internet limitations to give a reference to the world of how cuban gamers play, and a way to socialize with other people.......so this may not seem like it, but its a big thing not only for me...but a lot of other people here.

No sorry, nothing happened, i received a few PM and played with a few people but thats all, its ok though, im sure that handling a site like this is hard and the dificulty of organizing this is high as well, thx for your concerng thouhg.
I reached C- with 32-1 but then stopped playing. I hope i can travel again soon and maybe that time we can arrange something out,

Yes you can, PM me and i will give you my phone number to explain everything to you.
Could you release a replay pack or something ? Since there was no showmatch I would really like to see the TvZ style of the cubans that you talked about
yeah sure, were on a race war event right now so ill send you the tvz rep pack ( which is basically me vs zerg since no other high level terran exists here) Oh wow did i just said that? arrogance ftw

I want to see all the Terran matchups, was just more interested in the TvZ one since it's my worst matchup
Just wanted to bump this thread because of an interesting mention of the Cuban BW scene in the Netflix show "The Startup" Season 3 Episode 3.
In this show one of the characters is in Cuba and gets in contact with an underground group running their own little internet network, and they cited this started out to be able to play StarCraft among each other.
Considering how little known the Cuban BW scene even was within the TL scene, it's interesting that whoever wrote the script while going through their due diligence for a possible Cuban underground network backstory ran in to Cubans wanting to play StarCraft against each other.
BW has had a reach in the most challenged regions for decent Internet outside of Korea. It's uncanny how much of an occurrence that has been over time.
