Watch Day[9]'s cast of Chill vs. Combat Ex and you'll never have any doubts again.

If you want good insight simply look at what the players have achieved that commentate. When you do that Artosis is on top compare to the others and commentates. So he probably has the best insight. If want insight stick to the higher skilled players def.

Artosis, Day[9], Tasteless. Chill is decent one to watch since he deals with forums and like B- i think, Don't think he's as active as he was in the past though unless he is sneaking games . IMO anyone below B- or not close to it can be leading you towards incorrect information if your looking towards trying improve and focus on the wrong areas.

day[9] is pretty good (especially in ZvZ), and then artosis/chill to a lesser extent.

But really IMO english commentary in general is pretty overrated. I just sorta prefer korean just because it can be really funny sometimes. I don't like most english commentary because I feel like I'm just being told what I already know most of the time or something slightly wrong.

English commentary is for a certain type of viewer, and I don't think most of those viewers are the kind typing novels of text on Teamliquid. I'm surprised this topic has hit this many pages here, to be honest >.>

My approach to english commentary has always been just a way to watch a game with someone else. It's ok to watch a sport on TV by yourself, but it's a lot more fun to hear someone else talking with you about the game, even if you can't respond. Since pro Starcraft is such a niche kind of entertainment, it's hard to get 2 people in the same room who like it. I think that's where English commentary really shines, especially with dual or triple commentaries. It feels like you're experiencing the game with other guys.

I've found english commentary to be not as fun anymore =/ It introduced me to pro SC for sure but like, sometimes I feel like commentators try to say too much and miss some essential parts of the game or just say whatever's happening so it's not really interesting to watch...

I still like Husky, Artosis, Day[9] and Chill but I'd say maybe 5% of the SC I watch is commentated t_t

This makes me wonder, are there any english commentators that commentate in the style of korean commentators? i.e not as much analyzing but like excited retelling of what's happening at the moment.

I like Husky because he's comical and he somtimes he puts himself inside the unit's point of view.
That's just entertaining.

there should be a TL commentating tournament. that'd be fun. Have it like monthly or something. I don't know how specifics would work but have stuff like charisma, analyzing, eloquence and people rank like that.. that'd just be a fun thing to watch and see :-)

Husky has great commenaries, I just wish he would do more foreign events, because I feel there is a lack of commented events there. There are some really great events coming up, Love for the game tournement, ASL season 2, Nostalgia tournement, would be awesome if these games were commentated!

On that note, does anyone know commentators who do foreigner games on a regular basis (english) ?

Not saying much new here, I'm afraid, but I like Artosis the best by far: great insight and a good voice as well, which, although it may not be the most important part, still makes a difference to whether one likes a commentator.

Among the YouTube commentators, Cholera is the only one I can stand: the rest don't seem to know very much about the game.

Commentary aside, NukeTheStars does some pretty cool stuff with music and hype videos and that sort of thing.

In terms of teams, I actually liked Artosis + Gentho better than any other team I've heard. Gentho's knowledge of the game was all right (Artosis's was better, of course), and their casting really flowed when they were together.

Dude, watch a VOD with subtitles and you'll see that Korean commentators do provide a great deal of analyzing. There's a good one between Iris and Jaedong on Python, go check it out.

GTR won the thread with his first post
I watch everything those guys commentate. So entertaining and insightful

i do enjoy the occasional Cholera commentary though, but its rare he does a game that I haven't seen anyway.

I also got really tired of tasteless, and I always disliked moletrap to a maximum

hahahaha, I try to do this sometimes. Thats just kind of how my personality is i suppose (yelling and screaming ftw?)

A couple important things to keep in mind about this:

1) Most commentators go solo. Yes, there are a lot of dual/triple commentaries out there, but I would say a majority of them are individual. Its kind of hard to just yell AHHHHH PLAGUUUUUUUU PLAGUUUUUU PSIONIC STORMUHHHHHHHHH when you're by yourself as theres no actual content to the commentaries.

2) English is not a language that flows really well with that kind of commentating. I mean look at English sports commentaries vs Spanish ones, when we yell GOAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL it just doesnt work as well. I think English is a better language for saying multiple things in a stoked tone of voice instead of just one.

3) A lot of people are shy

Thats just from my experience though and I am slowly trying to work stuff like that into my videos. Dunno if it works with English though...

Edit: Reduced the 'though' count...

I think the best is SuperDanielMan. I really don't like any of the other english commentators. Rather, I really hate the other english commentators. Tasteless is good but his commentary content really sucks. He is a funny guy though.

Ok, maybe a balance then . I feel Cholera is close to getting to that point, but as Husky did say, Korean commentators do have 3 people cycling to talk so theres like always stuff to say. Now if only there were English versions of MBC commentators D:

Microsoft Sam recently started doing StarCraft commentaries and he is actually really good!
