I am sorry, Greth, I did not mean to. However, I am fairly certain the discussion is about commentators who commentate professional SC games. Sadly, since you make it a policy to commentate only amateur games, you are not that particularly known.

Like the poll.
I think that all the guys mentioned in these posts have their good and bad points. Like, for me, I enjoy Tasteless stuff a hell of a lot, but SuperDanielMan's tone of voice is like stabbing a knife in my ear, to me. I was pretty annoyed when he joined with Tasteless there, it sort of made it impossible to watch. Same with when LilSusie "helped out", adding insightful commentary such as "I like reavers!", and "reaaaaveeerr!". Tasteless did a really good job when he was by himself, as it isn't an easy thing, I've had a lot of discussions with commentators over the past couple years (you can imagine) and they've all sort of agreed that it wasn't an easy thing, he handled it very well.
I love Diggity's tone of voice, I loved that Klazart could talk faster than Jaedong could play, and I love Mole's excitement. I think it's absolutely fine that Cholera and Greth do this sort of thing and talk about the stuff they do because they enjoy it and not because it's exactly what everyone wants to hear all the time. I think Nuke has been doing a great job, and should be mentioned along with the other top guys, and I think it's cool that people keep starting up to do something they enjoy.
Chill is amusing for being brutally scathing, Artosis always did a good job, I think someone mentioned Ascension, if you go back and listen to that you can play a drinking game where you take a shot every time Artosis says someone is "very very good", you'd be drunk real fast. Thankfully he's sort of got over that, I mean, every commentator has some random thing they say too often, but it's good he stopped, haha.
Anyway, I've always wanted to see people be more accepting people doing this stuff because they like it, rather than just hated right away for some awkward reasons about not doing the super best most honest and accurate job or something. Go hate FOX News if that's the case, cause really, look at that shit.
I voted for Diggity, cause listening to him was what made me start watching pro SC games in the first place. Always enjoy what he's done.

TeamLiquid start a poll on the front page, people are interested in who is the best commentator!
The current poll is old now anyway Asgård won.

I disagree with what you said about Tasteless and SDM, they know a lot about the game (SDM more so) and they make it more interesting by talking about everything not just the games. Also Day[9] is great.

I think Tasteless and SDM are fine, they just need to tone down the randomness give us more in-depth strategic analysis. Both of them could easily do better in that regard if they just try.

Day[9] is the perfect blend of humor and strategic insight, imo

Wow I'm listening to a solo commentary by tasteless from 2006 (http://blip.tv/file/1153626 that someone linked earlier) and it is so much higher quality than his latest casts on gom. The last game I watched SDM and tasteless responded to a very standard forward rax in a tvt as if it were some kind of cheese. In fact every time I've watched gom lately I've either been annoyed by the commentary the entire time or I had to watch without sound. Tasteless would be a good commentator if he followed the proscene more actively, but not knowing what map is being played or who the players are is just embarrassing.
Artosis is the best english commentator I've listened to, and no one else is even close imo. I can generate my own excitement watching the game, I'd trade klazart's excitement for artosis' insight any day.
edit: daz and petzergling were pretty entertaining to listen to two MSLs ago, a link on bnet is actually what led to me rediscovering the proscene and joining TL.

I like tasteless casts alot when he rolling and the words are just flowing out of him, but when something catch him off guard and he starts thinking. He starts to go "ummm....ummmm...ummmm....uummmmm" EVERY TWO SECONDS AND I JUST WANT TO STAB MYSELF IN THE EAR WITH A KNIFE !!!!!
Still besides that he fantastic. So I'll go tasteless and artosis combo.

Cholera is the reason I DON'T watch commentated games lol.
When Tasteless and SDM are actually talking about the game, thats the best strategical insight from any english cast, but usually they aren't so yeah...

For me it's Artosis/Chill. I think Dan does a good job of mixing up color commentary/play by play. He's great at telling you what is happening, why it is happening, and what the possible outcomes are. Not to mention throwing in random interesting tidbits that can give you a better perspective of the current game he's commentating.
Chill I like when I want to learn more. Loved listening to him during TSL/other showmatches/his livestream. His way of teaching seems to be easier for me to learn from.

Artosis and Chill for me. Artosis can talk about StarCraft until the end of time and it is always interesting. Chill is the perfect counterpoint, and expresses his ideas well.
Day is the best solo caster because he doesn't need to rely on anyone else. He doesn't need a break in the cast to organize his thoughts and he can monologue well.
Tasteless doesn't follow his own tournament, let alone progaming, and it shows. The goofy amateurism that made him popular at WCGs and Blizzcons doesn't translate well in the GOM format. I can't listen to him anymore because of that, because it is clear he doesn't know what is happening. It is a shame, because had he invested the time and effort, he could be the best ever.
Other commentators have their strong points, but I feel people often try to be something they aren't, which makes it a bit painful. If you are a D player, don't try to cast like Artosis.

lol i don't think pr0terg (or gretorp) has ever come up but here's bascially my top 5.
Day[9] "Oh but who cares what I think I'm just a A+ Zerg" Pr0terg "Oh no Andre don't do that..." Chill Artosis Diggity
Cholera would be 6th.

I've never had a problem with SDM, I think he's one of the best. Other than that, I'm just going to echo what everyone else says: Day[9], Artosis, etc.
In terms of SC2GG commentators... I'd say moletrap is the best, just because none of them go really in-depth about the game, and in my opinion moletrap has the best jokes.
|
Day[9] and Artosis are great. SDM is good too. Chill is great for analysis, but in my opinion, he's not good as a commentator.

Obviously teamliquid casters are going to get votes in this teamliquid poll

I vote for Gretorp... watch his casts when he's streaming or ask him for some lessons... good insight and a high level player...
