First - gotta say:

Without the commentators its not a spectator sport. They are equally as important as the players, to me. So mad props to anybody who thinks they know what they are doing enough to cover this sport in English for free.

I have narrowed down the subscriptions I have on my YouTube account right now to only a few people that I follow on a daily basis, and they are more than enough.

Surprisingly - cause based on responses I've read on here so far the board favors old school guys - my favorites are newer kids:

HuskyStarcraft, HD Starcraft, DejaVu119 ... as well as on the older-skool tip SC2GGRise, and Klazart (now retired .. mad props! U were the man!)

The new guys who are up and coming ... they have a lot of enthusiasm, knowledge of the game.
AND they are consistently actually doing the commentaries week in and week out.

So I am going to give them props and say why.

About the old school guys:

Tasteless / SuperDaniel - I know these guys are legends in the game... but my impression of them on GOM is that they (ironically) were among the most lazy last season. Not only did GOM commentaries have the game music going in the background of the cast on every game (after 10 years ... can you just turn it off? Please? lets hear unit sounds thx)

... but they were mainly kind of like "yah, whatever here we are - jokey jokey" and they were being paid for it. Honestly. Felt like they were hanging out eating ramen and cracking on the game. Wassup?

The best casts were a few with Tasteless and Lil Suzie: yeah she had dorky comments but they were fun. And c'mon: she's hot. She also forced T to cover the game more because she couldn't lol.

Artosis, Chill - obviously amazing players and good casters. Obviously favorites around here. But as commentators I dont find a consistent stream of VODS from them. Also, the knowledge of the game is sick (as top players) but imo the casting is more dry and not as fun. To me.

Cholera - Obviously knows what he's doing but lately he seems lazy to me as well. A few games where I was like "c'mon dude, just say something relevant to the game" and then stopped watching. His jokes are often total facepalm material. I mean peeps can say what they want during casts, but when you are not really even covering the game at times .. whats the point.

But he seems like a good guy, can really get into the game when he wants to a do a good job.

Now, newer guys:

HuskyStarcraft: This kid wins the award for coming out of nowhere last season, and covering more games out of the gate with ethusiasm, fun and energy. He covers the game fast (ala Klazart .. mmm maybe not so fast lol) and is also a crack up (ala Tasteless) IMO.

He loves the game, keeps it moving, covers the scene and the game right at the start - then makes it exciting by striking a fine balance between sticking to the main point (the scene, the sport, the freaking game) ... and with personality ... spouting random funny shit that keeps it fun. Awesome.

DejaVu119: This is another kid who gets right into the game, covers the players / teams / stats, background color stuff. Then covers the damn match with enthusiasm. There is energy, he's funny but the main thing with him is the energy level. Obviously loves the game and the scene and it shows in how he casts. His personality shines thru.

HDStarcraft - Seems like a real cool kid who is also really enthusiastic about the game and the scene and keeps it exciting. I like the idea that he wants to start bringing the matches in HD. He is either a bit busier - or he is mainly waiting for SC2 beta to start so he can bring that in HD - but what I've heard so far he's another great new caster.

If its not fun I dont want it.

I like Artosis, SC is his passion and he is great at commentating and talking about the game.

Tasteless hardly talks SC at all. He makes fun of pandabear guy and mixes players names up lol. Don't get me wrong though I like listening to him talking, but after all he doesn't really bring that much to the table SC-wise.

All these random youtube commentators suck balls except for Diggity.

I use to really like Cholera, but his humor is kind of hit it miss I guess, and it's definitely really casual. I use a lot of Chinese streams for games these days, and I've grown quite fond of the XD=love and sanpao duo. Pretty good insight into the flow of the game, decent technical stuff, good humor if you know Chinese.

I think Xeris is the best commentator, along with Day[9], Artosis, and Tasteless... and Diggity.

Day[9] is clearly the king of commenting.

Which commentators you want depends on whether you want play-by-play + excitement, or actual insight on the situation.
My strategy is to fork people.

Day is the best. Chill/Artosis are good too. I haven't watched many others, but I'd rather watch no commentary rather than incorrect commentary, it seems to be the opposite for casual viewers. Enthusiasm is nice, but I prefer game knowledge (Day has a lot of both).
No I'm never serious.

Rise has gotten a lot better lately, and he keeps it exciting and entertaining. My GF, who doesn't even play Starcraft, was laughing listening to his commentaries.

Cholera/Moletrap/Diggity are all on about the same level to me. They have their pros and cons. I still enjoy listening to them, but there's generally better ones out there.

Day9 makes the most insightful and technical commentaries, but it ruins the flow of the games IMO. It no longer is really like watching a game with commentary, it's like a deconstruction of the game and pausing at various parts to point out all that's going on. So it's interesting in its own way.

Klazart I know he doesn't commentate anymore, but I loved listening to his commentaries because of his Words Per Minute (WPM) and excitement.

My favorite is probably day[9]. I watch his live stream quite a bit and it is very good, however I can't tell if I like him because of his commentating ability or because of the different format.

Diggity is by far my favorite standard commentator. He does good quality videos, doesn't talk too much about non SC related stuff, has a good voice, has a pretty good grasp of strategy, better than mine anyhow.

Cholera is second favorite, because when he does well he does well. He is about as close as foreigners get to the "excited" korean commentators. His humor is hard to get, and I don't like it when he bags on players (like hyuk, who never deserved it). But since he has toned that down a bit lately he's always worth tuning in for.

I like husky and rise about the same. Husky has a severe lack of game knowledge, but he's enthusiastic. Rise is also lacking in expertise, but he's been improving a lot lately and he has a good attitude.

Moletrap, sorry I just don't usually view his vids anymore because he uses them like a blog. Sometimes he'll literally be 10 minutes into a game, missing harassments before he starts paying attention. He works really well in dual commentaries with rise when he is forced to actually commentate on the game at hand.

Tasteless, I like him, but it seemed like in the last couple seasons of gom he was completely outclassed knowledge wise by SDM. He would barely even contribute the slightest bit to the cast. He is a good speaker, and he is funny, and I think he can and has done better in the past.

Chill is my favorite. His commentary makes events more enjoyable.

Ret did a wonderful job chiming in with spot-on analysis when he was casting Liquibition with Plexa. Plexa has no game sense, but whenever there was any action in the game at all he would get so excited that he ended up gasping for air and becoming incoherent. I found that very endearing. They complimented each other quite nicely and are a very underrated team.

Day[9] is insincere and overbearing. Instant mute.

Artosis is pretty solid now that his cadence is under control and no longer obscene.

Tasteless and SDM get a bit of a pass from me in terms of nitpicky stuff that annoys me because of how much exposure they have, but that doesn't excuse their surprisingly poor game sense. Overall, they are still better than most, but that isn't saying much.

Also, Hot_Bid was terrible on Teamliquid Attack. Really bad.

In short, if Chill and Ret could just do me a small favor and cast everything that ever happens in Starcraft, I would be happy.
I like things that are good and dislike things that are bad.

Good thing you're contributing to the thread.

On a less tongue in cheek note, Tasteless's depth of commentary improves when he's around other more in-depth commentators, specifically Artosis.

to me, the best ones are the funny one, I enjoy relieving my stress with the silly jokes from Cholera and Rise. And since i'm a very casual starcraft player, i don't care that much about game analysis (but of course, i enjoy a lot guys like chill and artosis)

I like nuke a lot to, he does amazing videos and his commentaries are very enjoyable too
