i think the tasteless+artosis duo is worth a mention, unfortunately there's very little material available from them. they seem to affect each other somehow, a lot of jokes and strategy. i thought the eswc coverage was good.
diggity seem to be underrated, he's one of few youtube casters that doesn't trip over his own voice. i think a lot of casters would get a lot better if they just calmed down a bit.

Artosis + Gentho!! Ascension was fucking great... Too bad they never finished the final round. + Show Spoiler +Dreiven vs Yosh: Dreiven: I don't have time for this shit

If you're looking for commentators who consistently cover lots of games then I would highly recommend following Diggity, NukeTheStars and Cholera. They all seem to me to strike a good balance between enthusiasm, entertainment and analysis. Especially Diggity and Cholera.
Diggity and Nuke keep it fairly professional without too much bias and insulting jokes, especially Diggity who is probably the best if you want someone who stays mostly calm and professional when there's nothing exciting happening (he gets really enthusiastic when there IS stuff happening though!). Nuke is sorta similar.
Cholera is my personal favourite but he's probably not for everyone. He has a lot of internal jokes and can be super-biased (he has a boundless love for reach) but really if you pay attention you can tell he's doing it all for our entertainment, and it seriously is incredibly entertaining (example: + Show Spoiler +). He also has a fairly good understanding of the game and does get some good analysis in. So as long as you don't mind some slightly unprofessional jokes I'd recommend him highly. He's also currently one of the guys putting out the most vids atm.

Out of every English commentary I think my favorite team is SDM and Artosis. I appreciate an analysis-heavy commentating style though and understand that many people enjoy the Tasteless style. I wish they did more commentaries. Back when they promised proleague commentaries on sc4a I was so excited .

Would recommend NuketheStars and Diggity.
Diggity has an amazing voice and a good pace to his commentaries.
Nuke has a bit more humour and perhaps a little less in depth analysis. However he does extra content beyond just casting the OSL which is amazingly good. (eg hype videos and his Swarm video). Definitely the best commentator for extra content. Also Nuke has his commentaries out the day after at the latest, which is better than can be said for all the other SC2GG commentators.
If you like the Klazzart type of commentary, i.e. super high energy, then check out RanshinDA

Chill and Artosis are my favourites when I'm trying to learn anything from the games. They have really good, in depth game knowledge, and they are very pleasant to listen to. I would love to see them commentate more. Preferably together.
I have mixed feelings about Tasteless; he comes up with hilarious off-topic stuff quite often, but sometimes it goes a tad to far and he misses really key moments. I also think people overrate his strategical analysis. He's good though.
For sheer entertainment value, almost all of the Sc2gg guys are great. Since Klazart quit I think Moletrap is my favourite, he is funneh. :D The best thing about them is that they put up so many commentaries on a regular basis.

A relevant quote from alffla's signature:
okum: SC without Korean yelling is like porn without sex.
Okay, really though, day9/artosis/chill are pretty much where you want to go if you want more in-depth analysis of games. Even if you've watched and played way too many games of starcraft in your life, they still occasionally say things that provide insight, and things that you don't hear much about.
|
Yeah but how often do those guys record commentaries? Almost never... which means that even if they're quality, it unfortunately isn't too helpful to recommend them.
|
Yeah, if you aren't too anal over analysis, Cholera is my favourite. He's very silly, very passionate, and at times insightful. Pretty good commentator for 'lower level' fans!
I loved Tasteless when he was solo-casting in Korea, but lately it's not the same when he has a partner. SDM is very hard for me to listen to as well. I have to concentrate too hard on what he is trying to say at times and it puts me off. I'm sure this isn't the case with most people, though.

The Tasteless + SDM duo on Gom is the best commentary I've heard for a RTS game. I've watched every game on Gom, and I've learned so much interesting about the Korean pro-scene from them. When you see alot of games it's quite ok that they talk about other stuff than the game you are watching, especially in the beginning where there isn't too much going on in a game.

out of the ones who do a fair amount of commentaries, i'd say Cholera although like other people say, i don't think everyone would like him. diggity's voice is just so unenthusiastic to be honest.
|
First of all, I think it's amazing that people take their time to do commentaries for us, even though I don't like them.
I like: Day[9]: Understands the game + funney Artosis: Understands the game + interesting opinions Chill: Understands the game + canadian Tasteless: Understands the game + funney
Dislike: Diggity: Would be a great radio host, but he does not understand the game and is not funney. T_T SDM: He understands the game, but the IdrA incident + his ability to not talk about the game + his ability to only talk about the errors that the players make, makes him annoying to listen to.
Just my opinion.

The problem with NukeTheStars is that he tends to be just one of those "hi look this is happening and he's building a supply depot and he's expanding and he's moving units blablabla" without much analysis at all, with information you can easily pick up from just watching the game yourself. I guess he's gotten a bit better, though.
There really aren't many good commentators around. Diggity is pretty good and his knowledge has been improving but he still has some quite strange ideas. Overall though, he is one of the better commentators Cholera really doesn't know much about Starcraft and only talks about lurkers and lurker/sunken/spore defense in zvp that his buddy taught him to do and it works at D-D+ rank. Still, he can be quite funny and entertaining at times.
Moletrap is quite good with the enthusiasm, but he really doesn't have much in-depth knowledge about the game and hence functions a lot better in a dual-commentary with someone like Diggity. Rise I've never really liked, I find his voice really strange, he has a relatively subpar sense of humor, and he really can't do much except 10/15 into DTs. I guess he got like C- with that though so maybe he's pro.
Ahzz had some problems with sounding like a robot but is getting better, and his FPVODs are actually highly recommended. I'd rate them just about as high as I would Chill's. Then there's Kenny who really sounds fake excited most of the time, and although his knowledge really is alright, I wouldn't rank him as one of the top commentators around.
Then there of course are people like GrethSC who knows nothing about Starcraft and makes commentaries where he makes fun of D-rank players when he himself is a lot worse than that. Not to mention that he even is wrong in almost everything he says while making fun of the player. Then there's RanshinDA, who's the most only-explain-what-happens-on-the-screen commentator around, and doesn't seem to know much about the game and only tells you everything you can see. The rest of the SC2GG commentators I really haven't heard much of, but I doubt I'd find them too enjoyable
Overall, my favorite commentators would have to be...
Artosis is the best commentator in my opinion. I really like his voice, his sense of humor, and his high technical knowledge, along with his DT hatred and nerdrages. Then, there's Day9, whose voice I at first used to dislike, but then started liking him. He too knows a lot about the game, and you can really see that.
Tasteless used to be very good back in the GSI and Gom S1, but he has gotten a lot worse to me, and really isn't as funny anymore and sounds almost like a C-rank player now. Still, he's one of the best commentators out there.
I really like Chill's commentating, and his stream is really entertaining and helpful, as are all of the games he's commentated. He really should do some more commentaries, though.
I guess that's about it.

I agree, Dashi and Sanpao are hilarious and their analysis is pretty good too.

SDM can be awful sometimes. I remember a game where a player, can't remember who it was or if it was a P or T, went for the fastest possible expo (12 Nex or 14 CC) while SDM was talking about something completely irrelevant and missed it completely and then kept talking throughout the game as if the player was behind economically. Ugh!
