Hi all,
I will be moving to the Washington DC area soon for work. I was wondering if anyone at TL knew of some awesome apartments (and not too expensive) I could stay in or around Washington DC. I really don't want to stay in the boonies and I'd prefer to have easy access to the metro as I won't be bringing a car.
I've looked online at apartments, but it's really hard to judge a place simply by pictures. So if anyone has any recommendations, I will greatly appreciate it! Btw, as I am moving out to DC having never left california, I won't know too many people. Perhaps an area with a great nightlife would be plus! (Downtown Bethesda?) Also if you're from the area I'd be more than happy to say hi and hangout and nerd it up some!
I simply need a studio or a 1 bedroom.

Uhh.... Downtown Bethesda is not a happening place.
Adams Morgan sounds more like your style.

Agreed; Bethesda is a little slower-paced. Plenty of great restaurants but not a lot of habitual excessive drinking compared to Adams Morgan.
There are tons of apartment complexes that are desperate for residents along Massachusetts Avenue between Union Station and Dupont Circle (Dupont has a nice night life, as well). I don't know what the budget for that area is, but I suspect you can get a studio/1 bedroom for a not-too-outrageous rate given the market conditions. A lot of the apartment buildings there were finished just as the market crashed or during the recession, so they have lots of units sitting empty.

olde town alexandria maybe too.

Probably best to get a place in the city even if it costs a bit more if you're working in the city.
You don't want to be metroing out to like shady grove/glenmont or any of the other outskirts of town late at night, and most of the night life stuff is in DC anyway.
All of the recommendations such as Olde town Alexandria, Adams Morgan, and somewhere between Union/DuPont are all pretty good.

My budget is somewhere between 1k and 1.5k.
Thanks for all the responses, I will be sure to look into these places you have suggested

Downtown Bethesda does NOT have a great nightlife.
If you want a nightlife the only thing I can recommend is look for clubs and stuff in DC. I lived in Bethesda for the first 17 years of my life before moving to Boston for college. Bethesda is not a nightlife type of town. It's filled with rich people who think they have an extremely high self-importance as a result, bordering on narcissism in some of them. There are still some great people in Bethesda, I don't mean to make it sound like a hell-hole, but there are just so many snooty rich assholes in their mercedes/etc not giving a fuck about anyone but themselves.
