They're completely different skill sets. If you're used to RTS and you want to pick up an FPS you don't adapt your playstyle to suit the game, you just learn how to play it from scratch. Or at least this is just my experience.
As for how I see myself...not sure. I generally move on from game to game pretty quickly so I've never really developed a style.
Edit: and is it just me...or do indents looks completely out of place on this forum?

You could basically make the same post about comparing golf video games with pinball video games. I don't really understand your point, unless you mainly wanted to reflect on the inherent differences between rts and fps (which are already pretty much known so you haven't brought much to the table).
And I agree with Falcynn that you don't have to choose to play all of your games either like an rts or a fps. When you play starcraft it's an rts... and then when you play cs you learn how to play like fps Doug would.

I believe I am multi-talented (I am decent at BW and decent at CS). Top CS players from Scandinavia such as HeatoN, dsn, and ins used to be decent SC players in Sweden before switching full-time to CS.

You can be good at both. I'm reasonably good at cs (7-1 in open this season) and although I have played bw less I think I have more talent in it.

I don't know if top tier FPS players can be top tier RTS players - and vice versa due to the amount of time and experience you need to excel in both. You can be really fucking good, but I don't think Jaedong of BW can be Jaedong of FPS, though he could be a top player and be amazing. If you get my drift. Atleast, I haven't met a gamer. Though really good gamers excel in all games they play generally, those that interest them atleast.

Correction: There's 3 types of gamers. Chatting in MMO's is a skill lolrofl

In a fps timing is everything, you usually have to calculate and remember 3 armor spawn times and be there on the second to pick it up or your in trouble. This helps with macro a lot because it's similar, you have to go back to your base to macro in regular time intervals. Another principle that transfers well is the ability to know who is in the lead and when to engage and when to flee. In fps you don't want a close fight if opponent has 150 hp more than you, in bw you don't wanna push out with your army if the enemy has 60 psi advantage.

wow redbluegreen you have an awesome point! i never even considered armor spawn times and player respawn timings when I have played FPS games, but then again, I'm a complete FPS newb..RTS as well now that i think about it...but i am trying to learn poker! i guess avoiding the enemy until you can pick up an armorspawn requires a lot of timing and knowing where the player is likely going to follow you (the paths that he will take)

I am multi-talented (BW/Halo3/CoD4)

I converted from fps, i was decently good in css/tf2/cod4
but in sc i get like 110 apm and struggle to get wins on iccup :/ its a whole different type of game, i have the reflexes to pull workers quickly to wall a ramp but it took me a while to actually multitask.

I think this difference is more noticeable on console games because both types (thinking and knee-jerk alignments) can be found.
Since I played smash, I have this photo :D

Hahahaha
I've found that amongst the gamers I know personally, almost all of them play FPS. Weak!

I think that dumber persons gravitate to the FPS genre due to gratifications being handed out like candy in most of them, while RTS games requires a bit of dedication before you get anything back.
They can be fun, but the shallowness makes them boring in the long run unless you have something against exerting your mind.

Why are games divided into fps & rts? :{
Bastards need to go to an arcade and play a fighter.

Obviously those two are the most popular genre of gaming? Along with RPG's.
GTR-2-Go, are you serious about the people like HeatoN were actually decent at SC? Pretty cool!

FPS and RTS are the 2 most common games that feature massive online communities not counting MMORPG's which really lack any skill except for PvP and fast chattings. Even pr0 ch4t sk1llz are becoming obsolete with voice communication to talk trash over having more money and better armor, other genres don't get very large online communities.
