so i met this girl at some friends meeting. She's pretty much what i like about a woman's personality. So a week later i invited her to get an ice cream but she refused, maybe i made the invitation with a little rush...
so i speak to the experience to give me advice on how to get around the situation. Maybe i should just casually chat over msn a bit more and go out with her and friends, to get her know more and invite her again, or just let it go. I think the first time we met i liked her so at least the look odds are on my side. She's also single after a long (3+ years) relationship, that ended not too long ago, maybe she's waiting a little until finding new couple

Did she sound at all like she was interested in meeting with you?
If not, then she's just not interested in you. Which means your best only chance of making her interested in you is to completely lose interest in her (or to act as if you have no interest in her).
If you're aiming to marry her in 10+ years, then the optimal strategy changes. But I'm assuming you're not. =P

NightMare, your approach was probably fine. What you have to keep in mind is that nothing you say or do will work for every woman, and sometimes, no matter what you do, a woman will not go out with you. In a way this can be seen as a disappointment, but I think it is liberating. Too many people worry about finding the "right" way to approach women, and then things end up overly contrived and it doesn't work. Better to just act in a way that is consistent with who you tend to be. True, we can all improve our skills when it comes to socializing, but in general the main thing is to relax and realize that every woman is different and that if things are meant to work out, they will.
As to this specific girl, maybe she isn't attracted to you, maybe you came off too nervous (no worries if that's the case, you'll get better), or maybe it's too soon for her to get into a relationship, or maybe she is realizing she is a lesbian.
Point is, you don't know her reasons, and you don't need to. There are plenty of women out there that will adore you. Focus on finding those and don't worry so much about any individual woman.
Meanwhile, nothing wrong with asking again, but if you are getting the strong impression she doesn't want to go out with you, you should back off.
