What's with TL.net?

I browse TL.net several times a day, but in the recent past, my interest in this site has decreased considerably. I mean come on, in the General Form, some probably paranoid conspiracists are debating about the legal foundation of taxes while others are "bashing" their own country. Then, we've got the Broodwar section, full with spoiler threads about the pro scene. When I look at the damn Strategy section, 4 out of 5 threads are about Protoss issues (lol, how can you actually lose with P?). And in the Blog section, people are sharing their daily eating habits (yes Subway is great..)..

Where are the quality threads/posts?

Hiding.

Seriously though, what's wrong with spoiler threads about the pro scene? Wasn't the Broodwar Forum created so that we can talk about Broodwar?

So I was browsing through some old threads today when I saw a couple of topics that reminded me once again of what kind of a shithole general has become. Two years ago we used to have threads like these:

http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=33486

http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=24964

that generated decent discussion about interesting topics. Nowadays we have some kid named Nimsaya who makes threads with a single sensationalist youtube video or article and acts like they're some fucking amazing discoveries that the American people have to know about. I think it's safe to say that the newer generation of posters after 2005-2006ish have been garbage compared to the older. I can only think of a handful of relatively new posters who I enjoy reading and also post regularly. I mean, I realize that the past may seem better just because it's the past and we all have nostalgia. But aside from all the starcraft related improvements TL has undergone, as purely a forum I don't think TL is as enjoyable of a place to post on right now as say 2-3 years ago.

Also there's a strong posibility that I'm talking out of my ass but I don't think stimey/chibi should've been banned no matter how neurotic they were, they had been posting here forever and in the end, were a lot smarter than most people who've ever posted on TL.

The best time on TL for me in terms of pure forum posting enjoyment was a little bit after I started hanging here regularly, before hot_bid was a mod and was considered just another funny dude, before legionnaire quit progaming, before and during savior became a monster, etc. I was just another flaming asian kid who became fascinated with the magic of starcraft, oh how I miss those days.

I'm not saying general should be some sort of academia filled with high level intellectural discussion. Just that I wish we have more intelligent/funny posters and less idiots going on and on about everything from their personal life to starcraft to politics. Who's with me

Hm, agreed there.

edit: Does it really bother people that much that a match's outcome has been spoiled to them? It's not like you're going to die if you know what happens in the end, I actually prefer people telling me what happened so I can stop worrying lol

i suggest you watch vods as promptly as possible. if the discussion has died by the time you get to them, then you either need to learn results via text rather than video or you need to regard tl.net as a read-only site.

live report threads, hype threads, FE's, PR, all the news posts, and some BW section threads all have good content.

edit: interview threads, every thread in featured, some blogs (have you read plexa's?) also have good content.

you might also need to learn to immediately identify bad content and then skip over it with strict discipline. many people read all the shitty content out of habit or boredom when they'd be happier simply shortening their time spent on tl.net

Nothing really wrong with it, but I'd appreciate some input aside from the recent pro games. After all, I consider the Tourney section the place to talk about this..

EDIT: Don't get me wrong, I don't want to rant about spoilers in general, as I don't watch so many VODs myself. It's just the quantity of threads describing those games.

For god's sake, the threads in question 99% of the time have [spoiler] in the title, I don't see what's wrong with it.

You're not the only one who has noticed this. I remember someone else a few months ago also posting about the deterioration of the quality of the forums. I started lurking here about 9 months ago and even then, I thought the site was more entertaining than it is now.

The site still provides great coverage of the pro scene, which is what it's intended to do and some very good quality guides still pop up in the strategy section. But recently, there have only been a few threads that really made me think or laugh. I don't know, maybe it's because things become jaded after a while.

Good idea, I really should skip the shitty stuff..

You know, it hasn't always been like this. Seems like this has come within the last month, shortly after the end of the TSL. Maybe a lot of quality posters are on holiday?

TL is what you make it. Sorry it does not cater to your individual preferences, and provide titillating entertainment 24 hours a day. Maybe if you chose to contribute rather than complain about it TL would be a better place.

Listen, I really didn't mean to seriously nag or insult anybody. I really appreciate TL.net, it's the greatest SC site there is and most of the content is interesting. However, I noticed a decline in the quality of non-FE (and the such) posts. I just wanted to see, whether I was the only one noticing it. Really, no offense meant.

Yea, I think this is exactly true. I think if you come to TL with some sort of timer in your head, instead of just reading through everything, it's a better experience. I think also, when you are new to the community, all the content seems more fresh and unique - it's only since we've been here so long that it all looks like crappy reruns.

I try to make quality posts (at least for OPs) every time. Sure there's a lot of crap, and it's kind of painful to read, but TL is a community site. There's gonna be good, and there's gonna be bad, just make sure you're part of the good

If you have a complain with spam, talk to moderators, but if you're appealing to the community (or just bitching), then really the only solution is to start pulling your weight. Lead by example.

I didnt take offense. Im just saying that the way this site became popular was through quality contributions. If someone thinks that the quality of threads is going down, then the way to fix it seems obvious to me.

I agree with Mani, we need more people to create logical/interesting threads [read, not conspiracy related] and we need more sane replies. That being said, it doesn't bother me since I don't come here to read general, I come to read and learn about sc.

The best part is that he's one of the most popular bloggers on TL XD I think I've just discovered the reason for all this: SC2 has revitalized TL with 14-15 year old boys!

Naggers.... But yeah, i noticed it too. As i've been here since 2001, now there's too much content and it's all thin.
Hypes don't get anywhere, cuz we have several over a month, so some care about one, some about the other and some just don't.
Stupid/funny posts don't get anywhere (except to closed threads maybe) as everyone is afraid of TL.net becoming 4chan. (LP.net is more tolerant to this, so you can try reading their general)

Or maybe it just looks so after the storm that was TSL. C'mon, even tasteless faded away during this awesomeness

Looking back at threads before my time now, TL has never been a haven for high powered intellectual debate. There are lots of forums where you are bashed for anything less than a three-paragraph post, where MoltkeWarding would just be considered another average person, and where impeccable philosophical or scientific background is virtually ubiquitous.

The reason I even bothered to post here is because the people have a relatively better sense of humour than most forums, and at least you can know who ppl are unlike 4chan. Plus of course SC being the manliest game ever and there being loads of sc vids and stuff here is nice.

I think if you are lamenting about the intellectual level of TL members, just make some interesting post about identity, logic or consciousness; I'm fairly sure the clever ones come out of the woodwork whenever a discussion like that is about.

I think TL is a pwnage site with loads of productive and interesting members. It's pretty funny and definitely not dumbass. I don't think one should get too doom-and-gloom that it's less good, because it still owns.
"Oh no, we've drawn Judge Schneider" "Is that bad?" "Well, he's had it in for me ever since I kinda ran over his dog" "You did?" "Yeah...if you replace the word *kinda* with *repeatedly*...and the word *dog* with son"

Well here's a question. Back a few years ago when the quality was supposedly higher, what were the more intellectually inspired threads like? The moment you took a stance and tried to back it up, were you immediately attacked in a malicious manner by people with contrary viewpoints?

I've been visiting here since 2004, and its much better now.

- Pro scene coverege is so much better (back then most matches didnt have a live report thread)
- Brood war section pretty much the same (except less interviews now)
- General forum isnt as bad as most people complain it to be.

Golden advice. Also I kind of feel bad I replaced all the awesome content TL.net pumps out NonY mentions with 'yada yada'.

I guess I haven't been here long enough to know what people seem to always be nostalgic about, but I think TL.net is a damn fine site. Lots of quality editor content backed up by one of the best forum communities on the internet with the addition of kickass events like TSL and TL Attack.

I mean, what more do you want? Besides people to randomly make awesome threads in General, of course.

I actually blame this on the flood of "4chan'ers". They bring nothing to the table and contribute complete garbage posts. I too have noticed the decrease in meaningful threads. I still come to this site all the time, but its just hard finding something interesting anymore.

Sadly, I'm not sure I have any interesting topics to bring up myself. Or else I would have started some by now.

The reason I and most people began to come here was because tl.net provided the best English coverage for the highest level of competitive Starcraft play. This remains so, regardless of the quality of the general forum. There remain a generation of stragglers who have outgrown Starcraft and remain here out of social acquaintance. These people are likely to have moved on with their lives and are preoccupied with work, studies or other hobbies, and who having outgrown that youthful exuberance of energy and emptiness of time which led them to Starcraft, have similarly toned down their participation on this forum.

But now you know something of my prejudices. When people laugh at my nostalgia for 1750, they must anticipate their turn in being called a cranky pessimist by the succeeding generation. There's nothing really strange about me, but I anticipated my old age before most people.

For people who feel dissatisfied at remaining, they ought to find alternative avenues of conversation. TL.net is only difficult to leave because people feel rooted here, but one can only stay in school for so long before the generations overtake you.
