So, I'm on vacations for 1 month, will have to return to Athens around 23-24 august. I'm at Paros, a stunning island with subpar inet connectivity.
Between my morning walk to the beach and the afternoon/night walks around the island, I got some hours to kill but I can't even watch youtube vids in decent quality without stuttering.
I was thinking of purchasing a console to game a bit but I don't know what to get. Help me decide, shall I get ps3/xbox? Mby a handheld better and if so which one?
Don't forget to include some games for the console you recommend since I'm clueless.
*i'd prefer not buying xbox/ps3 since the new versions are coming out soon but what do i know
I would consider saving those money and spending those extra hours onto something. I was in a similar situation not a week ago only that I was in a village in the midle of nowhere, alegedly for 2 weeks only, other than about 8 books I had nothing to entertain myself with but a shitty laptop and shitty internet so I just practiced on my guitar more than usual and read some of the courses for next year ( academic year that is, not actual year ), thus i kinda saved time for when I can be a slug in front of my PC.
Also, start drinking regullary before bed, I did so and I slept much longer. Don't get drunk, just a tad bit tipsy, have a few beers or glasses of win and than head to sleep. It might have been just me, but for some reason it made me sleep around 8-10 hours when i generally sleep 5-7 hours, not to mention you fall asleep easier which is always a plus when you aren't looking forward to the next day :p
If you really want to buy a console, get a PSV and buy person and just waste your time there, I haven't played it but I've heard from dozens of people that it's a great time sink. And it won't be as expensive nor will it's lifespawn be as short as the one of an xbox360/ps3.
@cambium, I said these are idle hours to kill when I'm resting in my home cambium, I'm not asking for general real life activities advice but thanks anyway, <3.
@ateron, Yeah I heard about persona too, I may pick up vita after all, dunno yet.
Going 2 months completely cold turkey from games/YouTube has been amazing for me. I know you said you weren't asking for general real life activities but you should seriously consider it.
you, or someone who loves you, is spending a lot of money so that can take a well deserved break from prostesting work and taxes or whatever it is that you do and get to hang out on an island that looks like this
why on earth would you want to spend your time dicking around on the internet or playing video games???? the greek islands are awesome, what in god's name are you thinking?? For fucks sake, fly out to the states and switch spots with me. you can go play xbox, ps, nes til your nerd brain explodes
Enjoy your vacation, don't waste the time playing shitty ps3/xbox games.
After you'll start working and only have a small summer vacation, you will start enjoying vacations a lot more.
If you really need to satisfy your gaming needs, play something on your phone, or if you got a laptop play an old game that you enjoyed when you were young, and you would never play it at home where you have access to your usual games.
Paros is such a nice place, why would you play video games ? It's true that it's not the most crowded of all Cyclades islands, but still, plenty of stuffs to do there. You can also take the ferry boat to other islands if your budget allows.
Of course you do Steveling Just say you know everything about Lionel Messi and she will fall at your feet
In terms of entertainment..try sports bars if got any? Or bars with sports on. Always random games on for pre season around this time. Or even just download FM13 for your mobile?
Remember, you can game/surf the internet when you get back. When you're in a place like that take full advantage of it. Go for walks, enjoy the scenery, talk to some people, and go for a swim. Realise how lucky you are!

Try 2 months with no games/Youtube and TEAMLIQUID.

it's actually great. i've tried 2.5 weeks and it was not bad at all. there's just so much to do out there.
I have to say, I'm normally pretty empathetic towards people who have problems, even if the problems are small ones, but this just is like.... really? Can we just trade lives so you can be stuck at home all day and I can be on the beautiful beach?

the possibilities are endless, and you want to watch youtube videos and play video games??
I watched a TEDtalk or something that showed that people generally live happier fuller lives if they vacation or experience new things as opposed to spending money on stuff. Kind of common sense I guess but here is an example.
You have 150$ you can go on a camping trip with people you barely know and experience new things and even learn things about yourself. And probably even come home with some money leftover.
OR
You can spend 150$ on something that will physically last longer and bring you surface level happiness and no real context or story to keep fondly in your memory.
In other words, it's always better money spent on an shared experience or something that you can't keep anywhere but inside of you.
On that note, almost every vacation or trip that I have taken to a river or camping or whatever has been mostly dumb where everyone is just getting drunk and trying to party and not trying to experience new things. Even though that sounds like a waste of time and money, I still learned many things and I wouldn't trade the experience for the money back and the weekend of doing something more productive.

I have a girlfriend and I saw that beach. I would find something to do for a month. I can think of a lot of things.
Try embracing your creativity. Write something. Play music. Whatever gets your juices flowing. A month is such a long time, and you will very rarely (read: possibly never again) get a chance to self reflect and explore yourself as a person again. Life keeps you busy with work, relationships, children, blah blah blah ect. The days tend to blend into another without anything meaningful or significant to punctuate the tedium. You are in a new place with enough time to do almost anything you could possibly want. Experience something meaningful if you can. The internet will be there when you come back.

Most boring fucking month of my life.
That month without technology.
well hey you are from finland. you got snow and ....
Read some books, take photos and learn to edit them or do some writing.
If you absolutely must play a game and buy something, I'd recommend a 3DS, got one recently and its awesome. Luigis Mansion 2, Animal Crossing etc are all great fun. I've played on a Vita at shows and I do want to get one at some point but I don't own one personally so can't recommend it, 3DS has a stronger line up for sure but Vita is probably better tech wise (2 sticks - why cant nintendo do this?!)
If it makes you happy, and you're not hurting anyone, do whatever the fuck you want, wherever the fuck you are.
I suggest buying an older console like a gamecube or dreamcast. You can often pick them up from a pawn shop for under 50 bucks. That usually includes a controller and a game. There are a lot of older games there that you might have missed.
Crazy Taxi, Chu Chu Rocket, Pen Pen Triathalon, Metroid, Smash Bros, and Super Mario Sunshine are all examples of light hearted games that are easy to pick up and play. Kind of perfect to just chill to with the doors open and the sound of the beach outside.
