Hey everybody. I usually do an eSports-related essay every 50 posts for a blog, but today I have a special treat for Team Liquid. I want to introduce you to my best friend in the whole world:
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/efZgf.jpg)
This is Newton the Newbie Newt, and he loves Starcraft II almost as much as I do.
He's not very good because he doesn't have any thumbs. He also has to crawl across the keyboard and use his tail to control the mouse when he plays.
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/frTjJ.jpg?5122)
He wants me to do this AMA because he's ready to embrace the public community. Right now he's feeling kind of vulnerable though because he was recently shut out of the Team Liquid Mascot Oligarchy by Elly. He understands her position though, and he respects everything she's done for StarCraft 2 -_-
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/0rrP3.jpg) Some day :'(
He lurks on Team Liquid and /r/starcraft all the time, and he watches the professional players stream all the time, so he has a pretty good understanding of the game. He's mostly held back by the fact that his body is only about 3 inches long.
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/N2zwH.jpg) Damn, he's good.
So, get to it. Ask him anything :D

Newton vs. Elly showmatch please.

This is actually a great question. After he came to America, Newton had nothing but a poncho, a pair of old, home-made leather shoes his father gave to him, and a dream. Now that he's in the US, he's worked hard to get himself a better life. He bought himself a striped linen pair of pajamas about a month ago. He alternates wearing that and a flannel pair he got for his birthday.

APM? league? Is he on a team? From the screen shot it seems he plays terran, but I'd expect a newt to play zerg. How come he picked terran? What does Newton think about the new 1on1 maps on the blizzard ladder?
that was all for now. Maybe you can link to his stream/facebook/twitter/fanclub so we can all join and support him. Thanks.

Newton has nothing but the utmost respect for Elly-- and he's the first to admit that he's not very good at the game. His goal for 2012 is to improve his apm from 8 to 30 and to get to silver league. He's taking reptile-tap-dance lessons in order to achieve this lofty goal.
If TL demandeth it though, Newton is ready to lose for eSports.

Elly is too preoccupied with Endymion at the moment. Have to take a rain check.

Some more questions:
Does he suffer from ladder fear? Cold blooded and all. How is his metagame and mindgames? With a significantly smaller brain, I'd expect him to be a bit lacking there (no offence). In general, what are the benefits/drawbacks of being a newt in sc2? I guess his reaction speed is very fast? Which is his favourite player/streamer? Does he ever suffer from racism (in the most literal sense) from other players? Does he have a background in any other RTS or computer games? He must be crazy good at FFR.
|
Has Newton ever been tempted to maphack or other hacks? What is his opinion on hackers and cheaters? What did he think about the Naniwa probe-rush drama? What playstyle does he have? macro, agressive, harass, cheese? Or the more bronze-style 30 min 10 BC rush from one base?

His apm right now is extremely low, but he's working on that (see last post). He hopes to be in silver by the end of 2012 (see last post), but right now is on a pretty bad losing streak in bronze (about 25 games now). His hopes are still high. He is not yet on a team, but he hopes that some day he'll be good enough to play for a team like Empire (Beastyqt is his favorite terran).
He actually plays Random. The shot to which you're referring is him watching mouzThorZaIN streaming. Newton likes a lot of the maps, but mostly because he doesn't win a lot anyway. He doesn't have a particularly good MU/map yet, so I'll keep you posted.
He doesn't stream because he doesn't play all that often. Follow him @Newton_the_Newt -- no fanclub yet (it would be imprudent of ME to create one), and he doesn't have a FaceBook yet.

He doesn't suffer from ladder fear, he's just a very busy newt so he doesn't have a lot of time.
Right now he's still trying to master the basics of StarCraft II. Speed is a real issue too. He's watched a lot of Day9 Dailies, so he's feeling a lot smarter about the game, and he has high hopes for 2012.
His favorite players by race: Terran: EmpirBeastyqt Protoss: MouzMaNa Zerg: BboongbboongPrime.WE
Most players on the ladder, he says, are very friendly. A few people just call him a faggot because they're probably insecure about playing a newt and they've spent too much time on /b/. For the most part though, he's unaffected by silly comments like these.
He's just recently come into the country, but he's retroactively gotten into the BW and W3 scenes. He hasn't played them very much because he's focused on SC2, but he tells me he beat the BW campaign (I think he used power overwhelming, personally)

Newton never has used maphacks or anything of the sort. He jokes that it's because he's so bad it wouldn't help him. I think that it's because he loves the game too much. He doesn't like hackers and cheaters-- they're taking the easy way out. Why waste your time and effort in playing a challenging game like StarCraft II if you're just going to cheat?

Does he tend to relate more to Zerg than the other races? In other words, is he racist towards the other two races and complain about imbalance because the Zergs are clearly underpowered?

He is real. Technically he's a Western Banded Gecko, but he likes the term Newt better-- his name is Newton afterall. His whole family is full of Mexican Bearded Lizards, although he thinks one of his cousins is an Axolotl

His favorite unit is the Carrier because when it shoots out interceptors, they look like a bunch of little flies that zap his enemies to death. He relates to the Zergling though.

What was it like growing up poor on the wrong side of the tracks in hardscrabble South Newtown? How did he avoid the gang scene? As a role model, does he have advice for young folk in the gecko ghettos?
|

I was wondering that with the tail does Newty, can I call him Newty, find using the keyboard easier than someone with an appendage disadvantage (only two hands)?
Follow up question would be that if he does think that it provides himself with an advantage, does he think that rules such as "no tails allowed" should be applied to even the playing field?

While it's true that Newton had a rough childhood, he never lived in South Newtown. He grew up in Cancun, actually-- but not the happy tourist part. He lived in the slums. His parents were fishergeckos, but Newton wanted more. He grew up looking for pearls by the shore. He saw all of the happy Americans carelessly consuming obnoxious quantities of alcohol, saw the smiling, vomiting faces, and swore, one day, he would be where they were.
Well, he looked for pearls until he found one-- a big one-- the biggest one-- when he was 16. He tried to sell it to a local vendor, but the vendor tried to rip him off, so he took his pearl, and he ventured for America. It took him two years-- two years wherein he was faced with desperate criminals, horrific violence, and more than one corrupted city official who wanted to take his pearl-- but he finally reached America. He worked his way as north as he possibly could, and found himself in Columbus. I found him sleeping on the street six months ago, and he told me his story, so now I'm letting him stay with me. Six months later, he found a steady job with a good income, he found a community he can call his own (TL), and he is, as he puts it, living the American Dream with every ounce of corniness he can.
He says he never joined a gang, but that gangs played a big influence in his life-- he's very aware of how much devastation they can cause a community, but also how much devastation they can cause their own members-- one of his old acquaintances from Mexico lost his whole family to a rival gang's retribution. He sadly reflects that it only made his acquaintance even more angry-- violence begets violence, he says.
He says-- with regards to the young folk in the ghecktos-- that he was incredibly lucky to find that pearl. He sold it for about $20,000 to a high-rolling jeweler, and he's using the money to fund his education. It won't cover everything of course, but he's working to help pay for the rest of it. His advice is for young kids to stay in school-- to get a secondary education at least-- and then to pursue their dreams. He knows how hard it is, but it takes a real Newt to succeed in such a harsh world, and he believes that everyone has it in them-- it's just a matter of perserverence.

He loves Newty. He has to use his tail to control the mouse when he's playing. He generally crawls across the keyboard, trying to use all 4 of his sprawlers to maximize his efficiency.
Follow up answer: he thinks it would be silly to ban tails from competition-- he thinks that he's on a level playing field because his body is 3 inches long and he doesn't have any thumbs.

banelings -- amphibian or reptile?

They breath air throughout their life span so they are not amphibians.
While they could be reptiles, I think the jointed limbs, exoskeleton, body segments, and three sets of legs indicate that they would be closest to insects or some form of arthropods.

Newton is studying Business. He's terrible at science-- we're both under the impression, however, that Zerglings are as big as -- say German Shepherds.

He used to get pretty upset when he lost-- luckily he isn't really big enough to do any real damage to the computer-- the most he's actually done physically is knock a plastic cup on the floor. Recently though, he's taken a much more proactive approach to learning the game though. The way he sees it, it's more about getting better personally than it is about winning games. He's lost a lot recently, but he's very positive about his prospects.
He doesn't really do drugs-- funny story though-- one night, he had a massive headache after a long and stressful ladder session. He had dropped about ten games in a row and he was about to lose his mind. So I gave him 2 advil to help with his headache. Turns out 2 advil is a LOT for a tiny gecko-- he started getting really relaxed and kind of sleepy. I thought he should go to sleep, but he wanted to play another game, so he queued up. Next game he rolled Zerg against a Terran. He started giggling and told me he was going to win with a fool-proof strategy.
The map was Tal'Darim Altar. Newton decides to 12 pool 11 gas, and instead of getting speed with his first 100 gas, he gets lair tech. He has only made Drones thus far, and neither player has scouted the other yet. By the time Lair finishes, Newton knows it's cross-spawn because his second OL made it to the other spawn location. When Lair finishes, though, Newton starts OL speed. He's been making queens by this time-- he has 3. When OL speed finishes, he starts OL drop. By the time that finishes, he has all his OLs together, loads up all his drones except four or five (which he leaves mining), and his queens and floats to the Terrans base. Terran is still on 1 base and has about 25 marines. Newton lands all his drones and starts spreading creep in Terrans base. He's lost a bunch of OL, but still has about 15 drones to make 15 evolution chambers in the base. Terran focuses down a couple, but about 10 still complete The Terran doesn't focus the evolution chambers one at a time, so they aren't all that far behind. By some crazy coincidence, 7 evo chambers fall at the same time, and the 35 broodlings kill about 12 marines. The rest of the marines kill the evolution chambers-- 2 more fall and take out 3-4 marines, 3 more fall and clean up the rest of them, and the last 2 go straight for the mineral line. The Terran just leaves. Newton had about 1k left in the bank, and still had 5 drones mining.
Newton doesn't play all that much-- he tries to do at least 1 game a day, but sometimes even that is really hard. He wakes up early sometimes to watch the GSL-- he watches MLGs, Dreamhacks, and generally any other major tournament-- when he has time.
On January 14 2012 11:04 Mobius_1 wrote: What are your thoughts on HOTS? Who will win Proleague? Do you like Kpop? Favourite artist/song?
Newton is kind of excited for HotS. He jokes that he hasn't been around long enough for WoL to be "old news" yet, so he can bare to wait a while before the expansion.
Newton was really hoping Team 8 would be an unstoppable monster, but he has his money on SKT1. He doesn't mind Kpop at all, but he never really got into it. When he listens to the performances in the GSL, he likes it, but he doesn't know the artists very well at all.
