 In all seriousness, it's not that the USA has a disproportionate amount of stupid things going on, but moreso that the US is in the world limelight significantly more than most other countries, so things are often blown up a bit more than if it were to happen in a more 'quiet' country. No country is perfect, no country is without it's faults or dumb people, dumb policies, etc. | ||

I completely agree that while dumb things do happen in America, it's due to being "loud" and under everyone's eyes, while other countries are seen as more laid back. That's a mouthful :3 You have a contradictory country that outreaches itself too far, but is confused in its allies, foreign policies, taxing, separation of the rich and poor while dissipating its middle-class. It tries to help, but intrudes instead, it alienates its youths but shuns the health of the old while rejecting veterans who served the country. The reason Ameirca gets generalized and teased a lot is because of its multiple issues that are connected with one another. | ||

OTOH, I think it started as something positive Americans used to discribe themselves. E.g Only in America can an immigrant who barely speaks English become a multimillionaire and a governor. So it's kind of a sarcastic reaction to the (perceived) conceit of Americans. | ||

Because there aren't any prominent stereotypes about Austrians imprisoning and impregnating their daughters in place already. Nobody would laugh if you said 'only in Austria' after reading that story unless it was already a well known stereotype that that's the sort of thing an Austrian would do, because it doesn't make sense otherwise. Would you say 'only in Germany' after reading an article about a German who had never drank a drop of alcohol in his life? No, because it makes no sense. Germans are known for drinking alcohol (esp. beer) in ridiculous quantities. And with that said... only on TL do extremely simple jokes need explaining. | ||
