...and by Starcraft I mean Starcraft as a WHOLE. I mean SC:BW and SC2 together. They don't need to be enemies, and I think a lot of people need to realize that.
I was excited as anyone when Blizzard announced that SC2 was in the works, but over the course of the beta, I some things started to worry me. Namely, posts such as these. Already mentally dedicated to switching over to SC2, the thought that MY game might not live up to it's predecessor was frightening. After a while though, I took a step back and thought about it. Lets take a look at a few of the possible outcomes of the BW vs SC2 "clash".
- Everyone switches to SC2. BW dies. - No one switches to SC2. SC2 dies. - A good chunk of people switch to SC2. A good chunk stay in BW. Both games do fine.
Now, which option sounds the most likely? Which one sounds the most desirable? If you answered #3 to either or both of these, then I agree. If you think about it, it's really not plausible for either of these games to be left so far behind to be deemed "dead".
SC2 will sell well. There's no way it can't. Even if it was a horrible multiplayer game, tons of people would buy it to at least play the campaign, make some kick-ass UMS maps, and maybe even give the ladder a chance. Regardless of how good it is, some might not like. A lot will. SC2 will do just fine.
Likewise, BW isn't going anywhere. If it's good enough to have the vibrant competitive scene that it does 12 years after release, it definitely has the potential to stick around for another decade. Even if SC2 turns out to be the cat's pajamas, there will be plenty of stubborn veterans who will never lay a finger on SC2 and vow to play BW until their dying breath. BW will continue to do just fine.
So I guess the TL;DR of it, and what I'm trying to say is this: SC2 doesn’t have to kill SC1 in order be successful. SC1 doesn’t have to deny success to SC2 in order stay alive. Both of them are great games and both of them are a lot of fun. So for god's sake, stop comparing them, and start playing them!

There's no fighting in here... this is the blog section!

Sounds like the title of a book.
I expect a book in the near future, with a dedication to TL.net in the beginning

it's a play on the title of "Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dr._Strangelove
seems like just a play on the title, not really a parallel.

Now I am full of anticipation. Don't let me down Cofo.

Thank you for your patience. We are happy to inform you that intended blog post has, in fact, arrived. Sorry it's not a full book. I'm working on that though, it will hopefully be published by the end of the year.
For anyone who came late and missed out on making fun of me, here is the original OP:
Posted accidentally... coming soon (It was probably more entertaining back then too!)

Actually Cofo, I was hoping for a 'life story' blog. I'm not into making predictions like this. Sorry.

man, I was expecting a dr.strangelove parody

I think you missed category growth in your possible scenarios. There will be a lot of new people joining SC2, so in theory, even if no one of the old people switched to SC2, there could still be a large population playing SC2.
Additionally, a lot of the predictions about SC2 have been incorrect so far, e.g. Artosis predicting who would own at SC2, so I think there is no need to worry for the next couple of weeks.

Oh don't worry, I'll get right on that. I'm gonna need a little longer to write that one though

I've actually never even read/seen it. I just thought a play on the title was appropriate. Sorry to disappoint!

Good point. The revised OP reads "a FEW of the possible outcomes"

I posted this in the starcraft 2 too easy thread.
The fact of the matter is, the game's development, and the utilization by players currently is too young at the moment to make any assertions. Have we seen custom maps that give more ability to players to go double fast expand builds viably yet? No.
Have we seen any player REALLY play at the level that SCBW Korean pros play? NONONO.
They are playing SMART at the moment, and they have good macro. Do they consantly harass with drops all freagin game? Do they constantly move back and move back in damaged units? Are zerg players using queens to heal their units during fights in the middle of the map while also moving the units, while harassing a mineral line with a drop, while macroing up units, while managing another fight? NO.
This is not on the level of SCBW not because of how simple it is to play, but because the game is young. People have to still get adjusted to what safe timings and opportunity windows are out there for things to do. There are plenty of high end pro games currently where both players pretty much just both sit there, occasionally attack, have one big battle, and one loses. That's not how a top Korean pro from the Broodwar scene would play this game, I guarantee you, and they will find a work to make high aggression, high skill cap style play dominant. Stop jumping the gun and crying Fire Fire!
And I think people don't realize that if Broodwar allowed you to select infinite units and have better pathing, the game would still require (at high level play) you to have seperate group hotkeys for various reasons. The different group hotkeys isn't because you have to have your hydras in 3 seperate groups due to game restrictions, it also gives you more dynamic control of the units. How come people don't see this?

I thought this was going to be a thread about how I can learn to stop getting overly stressed about playing Sc2. I love it, but every game I play I'm terrified I'm going to lose, so I can only play a few games in a row before switching over to WoW or something.

Thanks a lot, Cofo. Considering all the rage and anger that appears on the forums, I often feel like I am the only person in the world who loves StarCraft as a whole. Glad to see that isn't the case.

If an Arizonian SC:BW fan saw this, he would have shot you.
but i like the post.
