ME vs TEAM LIQUID MEMBERS
Internet Chess Match

Original content of this post below:
+ Show Spoiler +
Today, I got back to an idea of correspondence chess game played via TeamLiquid with all users who are willing to participate. I think this would be a lot of fun, but before I'll start to ponder about how to organize it, I need your opinion on this, as well as some brief info how many of you would like to give a try.

Officialy, I'm just 1800 player, which may be an equivalent of C-/C rank in Starcraft, but I'm quite sure I can play better chess than my rank says (however, I'm definetely not at IM/Candidate/expert level, just casual player).

Of course the game is not supposed to be boosted by any chess engines, and I give you my word that I won't be using any software of human help. I'm expecting anyone who'll sign up for this to be mannered enough and not use any programs as well.

Currently, the idea is to elect your moves by TL polls, but as I said, it's only brief post. I'll really appreciate any feedback about how to arrange it.

Thanks in advance!

1) RULES:

> I'm playing with white pieces.
> You have 72 hours to vote for each of your moves.
> !!NEW!! I'll update my move 24 hours after voting closes (see point 4).
> You are voting by posting in this thread "I vote... /move/".
> Please use Long Algebraic notation to avoid confusion.
> Voting always closes at midnight (0.00 GMT, 9.00 AM KST).
> I'll count the votes immediately after deadline.
> Members who'll be late WON'T be taken in account.
> After counting votes, I'll publish info, as follows:
- Voting results.
- Current position.
- Last move played.
- Updated list of moves.
- Exact time of next deadline.
> TL Members are free to discuss their moves in this thread.
> No chess engines or outside help, please.

Those rules might be changed before we start, basing on suggestions of signed-up players.

3) ATTENTION!

Starting list is open till midnight, 15 October GMT (16 Oct 9.00 AM KST).

4) IMPORTANT UPDATE FOR TEAM 2 MEMBERS

+ Show Spoiler +
On second thought, I figured out that keeping 72 hour timing window thinking period for both sides may stretch the game into one year or more (for example, 40-move battle would take 240 days to complete). Therefore I'll update my moves within 24 hours after your voting deadline, and then open voting for your next move again. Your voting window remains the same. I think it's still fair enough, since it'll take more time for you to team up and vote.

After starting list is completed, I'll probably open new thread for game itself (with banner, final roster of Team 2 and other stuff). Keep your eyes peeled.

If you want to join, just say it in this thread. You are welcome!

why dont you push yourself for IM? I think its achievable, if a 1800 ELO casual player turns hardcore

Lack of time for practice, I guess. Also, at this point you'd better have a coach who is very good at this, and it takes money to hire him, not to mention I don't know anyone who might be my coach. But in fact, becoming IM isn't my goal at all.

Maybe, but in correspondence chess you have a lot of time to ponder your moves and of course I won't banish anyone for discussing their ideas with other TL Members. From your point of view, guys, it's going to be collective work - kind of brainstorm!

Oh, and if you say TL members are far better than me in chess: I don't mind losing.

Sounds like an awesome idea, I'd gladly contribute to this.

Wow! Chess lol.

I must have played chess a few times when I was younger, but today, I don't think I remember the rules properly.

Off topic, do some of the older members remember that uber cool computer chess game with animations? The pieces were lively and did funny things, like when the rook captured another piece on the edge of the board it would push it over the edge and it would fall into oblivion screaming.
I'm posting on twoplustwo because I have always been amazed at the level of talent that populates this site --- it's almost unparalleled on the Internet.

i remember a fun ancient chess game i think it might have even been for dos, all the figures were knights and such and would move and fight like units, gotta get in on that again.

there is no way tl will not use engines on the side. when this was done with people vs the world, everyone used chess engines. I think it is understood that in this type of game people would use them.

Oh, c'mon.

I'm not freaking Garry Kasparov, i'm just random guy who wants to have fun by playing chess. I bet most of people who join it have exactly the same resons. What's the point of using chess engines? To be like B.Net maphack noob? Besides, TL moves are going to be based on democratic votes of all who sign up, and I'm pretty sure most of TeamLiquiders are good mannered.

Yeah this sounds like a lot of fun. I'm not sure if a strict vote is the best idea though, perhaps a consensus? I guess it's hard to see before we start though how it will really be.

And engines? That would kind of kill the fun
