So as you may or may not know In flames just released the latest album.. FUCK YEAH!
As a long time in flames fan I must say that I am really excited about this. Though I've only listened through it once I can already say that I am more impressed with this than I was with a sense of purpose. Don't get me wrong a Sense of purpose wasn't bad or anything it was just that it was kinda .. lame alias etc just didn't sit right with me. This isn't a new reroute to remain or anything though but it's really good anyways!
The album is good but there are some songs I am unsure about such as deliver us and the attic etc but overall it's a good album and at times it feels like the good ol in flames which is just gold. This might seem a bit like I am shitting all over it but no i really like it just that In flames has done so much good songs that it's hard for them to out do themselves and that's all I have to say about it.
Gotta check this out right now! Big fan since forever, loved every single album; then A Sense Of Purpose sucked extremely - I hope this can get them back on track.
edit: I'm mad. They had so much potential. I wish they had just gone back to where they were, be it Colony or Whoracle or Come Clarity (which I liked as well). Listening to those new songs made me put the old CDs in the player to purge my ears. Goddamnit In Flames!
Mediocre by their stanards I'd say I mean it's not amazing but not terrible either. Sound of a playground fading and Where the dead ships dwell are pretty darn amazing to be honest though songs like the attic are just a bit wtf are they doing.
After listening to it a few more times I'd say it's pretty much on the same level as a sense of purpose. But I mean if you avoid the shiiet songs then it's actually really nice
Drool the ones you've linked are the songs released prior to their change of lead singer. I do however like Anders Friden a whole lot more. If you like those songs then go listen to Dark Tranquility it's essentially the continuation of In flames early days.
That doesn't mean that I despise their early work, just that clayman is when things really got of the ground for me and it has been good up to come clarity which was a really good album as well but after that it feels like they've lost their spark. This album after listening through it a bit more just gives me the feeling of another a sense of purpose which was mediocre by their standards but still had awesome song like I'm the highway and chosen pessimist just like this one has Where the dead ships dwell and A sound of a playground fading.

simme123 everlost is with mikael stanne, graveland however is not. and i love anders friden too - before he decided he couldn't do proper death metal vocals anymore.

Ah yeah haha I am not an expert on who sung which song on those early days tracks. But as I explain in my edit that I don't think that they have to do the whole death metal thing Come clarity is an amazing song. But I do agree that they aren't nearly as good anymore but not due to that. They just feel like they're trying to make it more mainstream friendly. Deliver us feels like a pop song.. But as you hear if you listen to the rest there are still some more in flames esque stuff on there. There's still good stuff on there just a lot less than there used to be.
But heck maybe it's just excitement making me think that it's better than it is but I think it's alright nothing more nothing less.

Colony was his best performance, but albums after that showed that he stopped trying.

yeah you're 100% right with what you're saying and i appreciate that you acknowledge those facts. i'm very picky/elitist about (some) metal and especially about my beloved melo-death and in flames. this band means so much to me and they went sooo far down the sewer, it's sad. i see that some people who don't mind what specific type of music in flames produces nowadays can enjoy this album but i, for certain, cannot. and i will keep bitching about how bad they are :D
so i apologize for derailing a bit but i like having a point here :> i hope that some people enjoy the old shit i posted.
I like that they went back to their older style a bit more with this (around the time of soundtrack to your escape and reroute to remain) and i thoroughly enjoy this more that "a sense of purpose" (that album was absolutely horrible. not a single tune that i can hum back compared to a quiet place, man made god, only for the weak, bullet time etc).
unfortunately, it still feels lacking. i'm also not a fan of the more "american" sound they added to these tracks that are reminiscent of some punk bands.
Anders vocals are a joke. He is beyond terrible at singing clean. They distort and layer them so much to try and hide it, but you can still hear how shitty they are. It's a shame because he had some of the best rough vocals.
In Flames is trying to write catchy pop-y songs and failing miserably, it's a shame all these Swedish monster bands have turned into pussies. Soilwork and The Haunted have fallen into the same trap, but they are leagues ahead of In Flames in this new style.
Anyways enough ranting, let's try and save this thread.
wow, i wrote something defending in flames .. now i listen to a few of there songs and man im sad i was so stocked to get this new album now not so much to be honest im a lil sad about it.
Don't be. They still make good music but the vocals aren't what they used to be. Even though I prefer the old stuff I will still get their new album just to see what sort've music they are delivering today.
I'm always suprised about how broad the favourite songs are from the albums. Personally my favourite songs are Zombie inc and Jester Race, but there was a time where Soundtrack to your Escape and Sence of Purpose were my favourite albums.
Just ignore the old fans that hate on the newer albums and enjoy what you want to enjoy
