Hi everyone,
in my last blog entry on my progress I told you I was promoted to Gold league. I was very happy about that, and now I didn't play a single 1v1. Instead I played team games with a few friends. We had a lot of fun together and I enjoyed the games, but that I stopped playing 1v1 is bugging me. I feel terrible every time I finish a team game spree.
I want to practice 1v1 and get better as a player, not relying on other players. But then, I also enjoy team games too. This is a horrible situation for me!
One good thing that happened is, that klOhahn and I made it to Master league with a 5:0 spree in the placements, and I want to push him to play more 2v2 with me. I think playing 2v2 in Master should give me some experience as well.
But what should I do about my 1v1? I'm procrastinating it at the moment... and now I feel bad to get online and tell my teammates to leave me alone so that I can play 1v1 ladder. UGH! This is horrible! What should I do about it?
And while I'm at it, I also get distracted about Protoss from time to time. I played Terran back in August '10 and switched after ~150 games. I still feel attracted to Terran. It's odd, I even like to watch Terran players more than Protoss players. I use to watch Debo and Trump when I see their streams available. I dunno about that either... Darn, my head feels all overloaded at the moment and I can't focus on just enjoying some games and work on my goals in SC2.

play whatever race/game type you enjoy the most ;p. arbitrary goals are a pretty good way to get burnt out

Definitely agree with Zephyr on this one, I had the exact same thing happen to me when I was just about to reach masters (1v1) and I started playing mass team games and had a lot more fun doing so. Don't ever force yourself to just play solo if you don't really feel like it would be more enjoyable to you. One good way to keep on playing solo as well as team is play against your buddies in solo after every couple team games (if there at a level next to yours or heck even lower won't hurt you as long as you don't hold back). When it comes to race I main terran but play random so theirs my suggestion as to how to go about that. Unless you want to be pro then just do what suites you on any given day.

Mate, never forget that the ultimate goal of a game is this: To have fun!

I hear you, playing mass 1's can be very tiresome and boring if you aren't in the right mood, ladder particularly can be a pain. Try getting some friends/practice partners to play customs with. that can be a lot more enjoyable and it doesn't really feel like you're playing '1's' when you can talk to someone about your games. (You can still get masters in 1's this way, just play ladder occasionally but don't make it your main source of gaming :"P )

I'm in the same position really, I really do want to play 1v1 but for some reason i just can't get going with it..
|
my trick is to just do it, sounds simple but it isn't
the way i got over ladder fear is by telling all the people on my clan that it helps me play better if I just say what I'm thinking of doing what they are doing and how i want to react out loud to other people because then i catch it if it's dumb, it works for me.
heck maybe you can all start 1v1ing and doing that.

I too am plagued by 1v1 anxiety. I couldn't play more than 2-3 games a day. However, I've played over oh geez...1600ish team games? http://sc2ranks.com/us/1163515/Clicker
So here's the thing. Trying to justify team games as somewhat practice for 1v1 is hurting your goal. If you want to just play team games go for it. There's nothing wrong with it. Do what's the most fun for you. If you try to say oh I'll get a little better doing team games - well..anything you can gain mechanically/mentally you'll gain eight times as fast in 1v1. Team games can make your play lazy and one-dimensional.
If you really want to just 1v1, let your teammates know, set yourself to busy and go for it. It's going to start off really rough. I'm just now getting over this, like as of the past week or so (in which I've grinded out 40 games or so - not an incredible amount but, literally almost half of what I played in all of season 1). His account is Diamond, I'm completely out of practice in 1v1 in Masters so I figured I'd give my friend a Masters 1v1 and once he's promoted I'll switch back to mine.
Back to those mass team games I mentioned I played. I was almost always on Vent with my friends when I played, so I was always talking through my games. 1v1, I've realized that's what's missing. I've been streaming and having my friend watch and sit on Vent. That's totally made 1v1 my comfort zone. I was just going through games without stopping and staring at the find match button with anxiety in between games.
So a few more tips. 1. Stop procrastinating and GO. 2. If you want do it for yourself, do it. If you're doing it because everyone says 1v1 is the most important, don't. Seriously, you don't have anything to prove to the internet. 3. DO NOT check profiles in between games. It was a problem I had. I'd be curious and check their profiles, but this is the worst thing you can do if you're hesitant to play 1v1. You'll waste time and possibly lose your nerve and stop playing. Check them after! :D
I feel like I'm missing a few points I wanted to include here, but i hope this helps anyway. gl

heyo! Silver zergish hyeah. i'll put in some opinions too, as i have goals (thanks to the Cecil guide you mentioned in your last post).
My biggest problem is playing consistently on the weekends. I have party friends and usually friday-sunday i am too out of it to feel like focusing on my sc2 goals, including this past weekend. so that's three days off with no continuity! it bites me in the arse on the days back. well, my goal for june is to play 40 games a week. Today is the end of the first week, and am at ~25 games after cramming 10 games last night and 2 games before work today. I too feel disappointed to do so poorly with my goals. But how does my comment relate to your post?
It is possible to feel disappointed or overloaded anytime you have goals. But there is a good side to this- a failure in real life indicates that you can either make more realistic goals, switch goals completely (to try something fresh), or just reset and work harder. In this way SC2 is like school and homework but hopefully much more enjoyable. You fail, you decide how to proceed from there.
My roomie realized that he enjoys 2v2 much more than 1v1 and my opinion is that the two require different skillsets. Since he doesn't care much about sc except to play any RTS game, he will likely start playing more 2v2. I am more serious and want to see how much I really commit to learning the basics- a goal to be diamond by september 09 with ~500 games, and mini goals every few weeks. Rethink your goals in the longer term and the shorter term and consider what you want from there. I think maybe once you can articulate these things to yourself, it will be easier to communicate this to your teammates? gl with this
Hope you have fun and get to the same point as me! Since I have been playing more recently I enjoy getting smashed or cheesed (or winning lol) as long as I'm macroing, keeping low money, and making good decisions.

I focused on your post about putting of 1v1s and didn't really look closely at your pic you posted there - you're Protoss. http://www.teamliquid.net/blogs/viewblog.php?id=227199 I actually do free protoss coaching and I'd love to help you, and maybe learning some new things to put into practice on the ladder will encourage you to play more. PM me if interested :D

@Clicker: Coaching will be hard to get from you, I'm on EU and I take it you're on NA!?
@Fun in the game: I just had some fun 3v3s with a friend of mine. Just played some random and enjoyed myself.
@Goals: I will not rethink the 1v1 goal. It's not to farfetched. I will just get myself doing some ladder. That said, I don't check profiles in 1v1 (@Clicker), I had that problem too and quit it. :D
